I have returned for my fifth overall recap, and my first recap of season 13! Just 24 hours ago, I had no idea when this episode might have aired, but thanks to the wiki and clues found in the episode, I'm positive that the correct airdate of this episode is February 1, 1996, which was a Thursday show. I'll explain later on during my "Additional Notes" feature on how I figured out that this was the episode, but for now, I'll stop talking and recap the show!
Cindy Bottini, of Eagle River, Alaska, is back for her third and final day. She has won $14,600 over the course of two days, but hasn’t been able to win anything in the Bonus Round. Maybe today will be the day she can finally win it!
Carolyn Thornton is from Austin, Texas. She is single and a third-degree blackbelt, which she attributes to her being single. She also closes commercial and residential real estate transactions.
Nate Hay is from Torrance, California and is attending college at J.C. El Camino (which I’m guessing is El Camino College). He’s an aspiring professional golfer with a 2 or 3 handicap. According to Charlie, it’s “not good enough to be a pro,” which causes Nate to laugh but the audience to groan.
Pat says that Charlie’s now made another friend, which makes the announcer audibly laugh. Back to the game, our host reminds us that $1,000 is the top dollar value for the first round, but he does not say contestants are playing for cash.

Returning champ Cindy drew #1, which means she goes first tonight. She nets $600 on her first spin thanks to two L’s on $300. Then then hits the $1,000 space and is able to double her haul with two T’s. Cindy decides to buy a couple vowels, getting two I’s and three E’s. Next she doubles $400 with two R’s, and then gets to pick up the SURPRISE after correctly guessing two H’s. With all her money, she decides to buy the three remaining vowels, getting one each of A, O and U. Cindy spins again and gets $1,000 from two S’s on $500.

Cindy tells Pat she wants to solve and wins $3,150 for I’LL GRANT YOU THREE WISHES. But that’s just her cash, as she also won the Surprise. Charlie tells her all about her new vase, “Homage,” crafted as a tribute to famed sculptor Rene Lalique 50 years after his death. It’s worth $6,000, bringing her round one haul up to $9,150.
Cindy - $9,150
Carolyn - $0
Nate - $0
Pat mentions that the day before, Cindy won a document from General Custer and today she gets a vase commemorating Lalique’s death. “Kind of a grim list of prizes,” Pat says as Cindy laughs uncontrollably and Charlie can quietly be heard laughing in the background. “Gosh knows what else we have in store for you,” the host continues as he then asks, “Charlie, what else do you have from the dungeon of the macabre?”
Charlie tells Pat all about a watch that a contestant could win in the next round. It’s a 14-carat gold panther-link bracelet watch, which includes 11 one-point diamonds. Designed by Croton, the prize is worth $5,200. Pat then asks Charlie if the miners who mined it were caught in a cave-in, and Charlie tells Pat they weren’t.

Carolyn takes her first spin of the game, and it’s a good one when she lands on the WATCH that Charlie just described. She picks it up thanks to a solitary N. Having no money, she spins again and hits the lowest dollar amount on the wheel, $150 which she wins with a T. But she can’t buy a vowel until she hits $400 and gets three S’s from it. Finally with enough vowel money, she buys three E’s. She spins again and gets $1,000 thanks to four R’s on $250. She buys three A’s before spinning again and getting $350 on a solitary F. Carolyn goes again, hitting $800 and doubling her money thanks to two B’s.

Satisfied with her money totals, Carolyn solves ? SUBMARINE / ? BRICK ROAD / ? ROSE OF TEXAS for $3,800. And being from Texas herself, it should be no surprise that she got $1,000 for correctly identifying YELLOW as the common thread. Oh, and she’s also got the watch, too. All in all, that round was worth an even $10,000.
Cindy - $9,150
Carolyn - $10,000
Nate - $0
So far, both players have monopolized their rounds. Will Nate be next? We’ll find out in round three as a $10,000 space is added to the wheel.

Pat reminds the contestants that Person does not always mean Proper Name, then tells Nate to give his first spin of the game. He cashes in on $800 thanks to a single T, but then hits the big bucks when he lands on $3,500 and finds four N’s in the puzzle. Nate decides to buy a vowel, but he ends up finding the first incorrect letter of the entire game as there are no E’s in the puzzle.

Cindy’s up next and she also hits $3,500, doubling her money thanks to two R’s. She buys three I’s and three A’s before spinning again, getting $800 from two W’s on $400. But thanks to LOSE A TURN, she can’t go any further.
A W A R _ -
W I N N I N _
_ _ _ R N A _ I _ T
Current leader Carolyn gives the wheel a spin and gets $800 from a single D. She then adds $800 more thanks to a single G landing on the same wedge. But like Cindy, her luck runs out when she hits LOSE A TURN.
A W A R D -
W I N N I N G
_ _ _ R N A _ I _ T
Back to Nate, he decides, instead of spinning the wheel, to buy the two remaining vowels, and finds one O and one U.
A W A R D -
W I N N I N G
_ O U R N A _ I _ T
Nate excitedly tells Pat he wants to solve the puzzle and cheers before he calls out AWARD-WINNING JOURNALIST. Each player now has a large amount of money, and each round has given a new leader, which continues with Nate’s $14,050 victory.
Cindy - $9,150
Carolyn - $10,000
Nate - $14,050
In a tight game such as this, round four can make all the difference, as just under $5,000 separates third and first place. And how convenient, as there is a $5,000 space on the wheel, along with a trip to Idaho that somebody could win.

We’re back to current leader Nate, who thinks he’s hit the $5,000 space, but the wheel keeps going and he hits $300 instead. He gets double the money thanks to two T’s, and then gets four E’s. He misses out on the $1,500 and instead lands on $350, but again doubles his money thanks to two S’s. Pat thinks Nate probably ate too many Wheaties this morning. It’s likely true, as Nate also misses out on the DOUBLE PLAY, but still wins $1,200 after calling three R’s on $400. But the vowels continue to give Nate problems as there are no I’s.

Carolyn may be a fan of detective shows, as she correctly solves PERRY MASON & DELLA STREET. She only won $350 in cash, but Pat suspects her Idaho trip might put her over the top. Charlie tells her she’s won a whitewater rafting expedition down the Salmon River in Idaho. It includes 100 miles of river rafting, all worth $5,700, making her fourth round haul $6,050.
Cindy - $9,150
Carolyn - $16,050
Nate - $14,050
This means Carolyn edged out Nate by $2,000 to claim victory and go to the Bonus Round!
Cindy may not have become a three-day champ, but she still goes home with a very impressive haul. Over the course of three days, she’s won $23,750.
Pat takes Carolyn to the Bonus Round to show her the four remaining prizes (the $25,000 cash has already been won). Carolyn could win a trip to London worth $26,000; an Italy tour that includes Rome, Venice and Florence worth $20,000; a trip to Paris worth $15,000; and a Saab, which Pat said Cindy didn’t win yesterday, worth over $21,000.
Hi, woffan9821 here to hijack this thread and complete the recap. I'll spoiler out the part where pakman goes off his recollection for the bonus round, and I won't touch the additional notes, but for the sake of finishing the recap, here we go:

Unfortunately, this is where my copy of the episode ends. While I did have the Bonus Round recorded at one point, a family member erroneously recorded it over with an English Countryside Week episode. But, based on my memory, I know that Carolyn did not solve the Bonus Round and did not take home the Saab. If I recall, Carolyn whined when she lost and Pat remarked, “And she’s SAABing!”
Additional Notes:
- My discovery of the date this episode aired started with the wiki, where I found a note that said this week (which is incorrectly identified as the week of January 28; the 28th was a Sunday, so it should say the week of January 29) featured trips to Italy, London and Paris, as well as a car. Those are the exact prizes available to Carolyn in the Bonus Round. With one prize - the cash - already being won, that means that this could not possibly be the Monday show. Now we turn to Cindy, who is on her third day on the show. During her spiel with Pat, he reveals that Cindy has not won a Bonus Round. This likely means the Monday show featured an unknown contestant winning the $25,000. They returned on Tuesday, but lost to Cindy, who, in turn, lost the Bonus Round. Cindy's second day would then have been Wednesday, where she failed to win the Saab in the Bonus Round (Pat tells Carolyn they tried to give it away the day before. We know for a fact that Cindy was the winner of that show). Cindy's third day, this show, would have been on a Thursday. A 1996 calendar, plus basic math, confirms that Thursday that year was February 1. (An additional note: due to the error on the wiki, the episode marked as February 1 should be marked as February 2).
- Carolyn's second day, February 2, used to be available online, but it's since been deleted.
- The first wrong letter of the episode is not called until ROUND 3. Even more interesting? There are only TWO wrong letters called the entire main game (excluding the Bonus Round), both of them were called by Nate and both of them were vowels.
- Another interesting fact about this episode; Carolyn picked up both of her prizes by calling "N," and both times, there was only one in the puzzle.
This was a fun episode to recap, and I never realized what a great episode it was until I finally sat down to take notes on it. All three players were fantastic people (I forgot to mention that Nate applauded both of his contestants and can audibly be heard yelling "Come on, Cindy!" and "Come on, Carolyn!" at various points in the game) and it would have been nice to see any of them in the Bonus Round.
I'm going to try this weekend to get my two English Countryside Week episodes recapped, both of which are memorable for their own reasons. I won't spoil those reasons, but let's just say I'm happy to have both of them in my collection.
