Rather stingy on the letters in the BR tonight after so many generous ones. I still got it with only the N.
TU1 was rather tricky.

R1: FIELD MOUSE was my gut on this one. If Jeff called the M's, he would've gotten it. As for Dawn...unnecessary spingle. R2: Nice redemption for Jeff. R3: Great round for Jeff! I thought it was hilarious that Pat playfully punched Jeff after said red contestant got so anxious on where he'd be going. R4: Nice quick solve by Marissa! Bonus Round: This was tough, and it didn't help that Jeff played that badly. I got it w/ his choices, though. EPISODE RATING: 6 out of 10

Compared to yesterday, this show wasn't all that great, especially in the Bonus Round. I was expecting the letter choices there to strike out, but thankfully, at least, that wasn't the case. Also, what really ticked me was that they went and dubbed the current Toss-Up solve cue over the 1997 puzzle-solve cue for the opening flashback clip, in order to dodge paying royalties to Merv Griffin's estate.

R1: Wheel, please lower the house minimum back to $500. Players should not be rewarded for playing redundantly. -_- Pat is aware of this, too, because he'll usually say "you want to go again?" after they get the single consonant. BR: And I go "-_-" again...wasting almost never leads to winning, people...But I agree with him. Nobody says that. I guess we were due for a hard or obscure puzzle. I don't even think I could get that with the A's. Why did they have to replace the '97 solve cue with the Toss Up solve cue?! And how were they able to do it so seamlessly? Do they still have the masters to all these old shows where they can just change the audio track as needed? Also, fun fact: to this day, "Round 2" auditions use that solve cue for their computerized puzzle board program. Pat punching Jeff was funny, but you could tell it was planned and they probably had to re-shoot it. Nobody seemed to notice it or care about it. The punching sound was an interesting touch, though. That will probably make it into the next clip show. Pat: "You've been a lovely audience." Yeah, right. They didn't do anything tonight. You'd think they'd be on the edge of their seats with all of Jeff's close calls with the Wheel. At least he didn't hit top dollar. That would have been terribly awkward seeing how reactive he was to everything, and how unresponsive they were to Marissa's $3500 hit. Hopefully the coffee will get them more engaged tomorrow. I wanted Pat to destroy the coffee pyramid. It would have been the funniest closing since the pieing in 1991. Subpar gameplay tonight, aside from the impressive R4 solve. Rating: 2/5

Not happy at all with the BR puzzle and that stupid stock punch effect.

R1: I felt bad for Jeff. To be honest, I actually thought HOUSE for the last word, too. I don't think I've heard of field mouse before. R2: Nice round for Jeff! R3: Another nice round for Jeff! And I also thought it was funny how Pat was punching Jeff at the end. BR: I had I'M after the RSTLNE, and AGAIN after Jeff's picks, but couldn't think of anything for that middle word. Overall, good maingame, not-so-good BR. I liked the ending clip too. Although, it would've been funny if Pat actually destroyed the coffee pyramid.

Why did they have to replace the '97 solve cue with the Toss Up solve cue?! in order to dodge paying royalties to Merv Griffin's estate. And yet they leave "Big Wheels" alone and send royalty checks to Thicke. The dafuqery is immense, and heavily suggests a distaste for Merv's cues (i.e., "quality"*) -- again, the undated 1985-86 clip has the music** almost completely gone, and as a result Jack sounds like an impersonator. That shouldn't happen.* Not saying Thicke's cues weren't "quality", because they definitely were. ** The remainder sounds like "Frisco Disco", probably my favorite of Merv's Wheel prize cues.

** The remainder sounds like "Frisco Disco", probably my favorite of Merv's Wheel prize cues. They had played that same 1980s "Vanna/Bug Spray" clip during Season 25, with the music cue intact, which is definitely "Frisco Disco". What I don't get is that Sony goes to great pains to scrub Merv's music from Wheel, yet they retain his basic melody of the Jeopardy! theme in some form to this day.

Because J!'s theme has become so much of an icon that it would be a sin to get rid of. Since Wheel's theme kept getting re-orchestrated every few years, they probably figured people wouldn't mind.

What I don't get is that Sony goes to great pains to scrub Merv's music from Wheel, yet they retain his basic melody of the Jeopardy! theme in some form Because J!'s theme has become so much of an icon that it would be a sin to get rid of. Since Wheel's theme kept getting re-orchestrated every few years, they probably figured people wouldn't mind. Problem is, "Changing Keys" is just as iconic -- why else would Saturday Night Live and Family Guy opt to use it long after it had disappeared from the show itself? Besides, the Jeopardy! theme and "Think!" were also re-orchestrated over the years. They figured nobody would mind, and then proceeded to ignore everyone who said "Please bring back the catchy, iconic, and good music rather than keep this succession of generic/crappy music." Further, the 1997 "Changing Keys" and its puzzle-solve cue were composed by Steve Kaplan, so the show would've had to pay royalties to two estates. The fact they've replaced these and not Thicke's music is far more disturbing as a result, and suggests they'd rather pay the living than the dead. Because I clearly needed yet another reason to pelt Friedman with tomatoes.

Wario, I still think you're getting too worked up about minutiae.
I mean, just because they snipped out Griffin's music doesn't mean a thing. Maybe the Thicke music has different rights — or even expired rights — due to its age.
Furthermore, the 1984 "Changing Keys" may have been used on Family Guy and the like, but that particular version hasn't been heard on the actual show since 1989. Also, Family Guy and SNL used it for parody, which is likely a whole different story on music rights. Also, keep in mind they snipped out "Changing Keys" on Retro Week in 1999, so removing Griffin's music is nothing new.

You know, you'd think contestants would realize that calling obvious letters in the BR helps no more than calling whatever letters you'd normally, and if it replaces possible critical letters like B and A, it could actually hurt.
Ah well.

I was as surprised as most of you when Jeff guessed what I would've said on the Jackpot Round puzzle & wasn't ruled correct.
He fell for the I'M trap when picking his BR letters; CDMA would've sure helped.

Good episode last night. Couldv'e been better if Vanna did allow Pat to grab a coffee from a pyramid, and staff didn't have to plaster 97 puzzle solved cue with a current one. Can you imagine that they used a current puzzle cue on a classic clips.

Responding to these comments in a factual manner, for the record. just because they snipped out Griffin's music doesn't mean a thing. Maybe the Thicke music has different rights — or even expired rights — due to its age. Looking it up, it seems that recordings published between 2/15/72 and 1978 had to have a copyright notice on the recording or its cover or else it immediately went into the public domain. I know Merv replaced Thicke's cues in '83 with his own because the royalties would've doubled otherwise, so either it expired by 1998 (the December 4, 1979 cue was plainly audible during the clip of Vanna's audition on the ceremonial #3,000) or it never did. Also, keep in mind they snipped out "Changing Keys" on Retro Week in 1999, so removing Griffin's music is nothing new. Except they've been inconsistent -- both Retro Weeks snipped out "Changing Keys", but did it sloppily (you could still hear it); the ceremonial 4,000th show retained the puzzle-solve cue for the AN AMERICAN SUCCESS STORY solve; as Otter pointed out, the "exercise machine" clip did have "Frisco Disco" intact when it was shown in Season 25; anything from the "Changing Keys" era has that music intact on the show's website; and the '97 puzzle-solve cue was made by Steve Kaplan, so they snipped out his work as well. Wario, I still think you're getting too worked up about minutiae. I certainly hope not; I'd rather avoid that road. It's just something I've noticed, especially since more viewers would recognize "Changing Keys" than "Big Wheels". Regardless, this is (hopefully) the last I'll say on the subject.
