R1: Null cycle #1 guess: Kristy - dud S around $400 / Beau - $0 Bankrupt on MDW's right edge / Rebecca - LAT R2: Null cycle #2 guess: Kristy - dud L on $650 / Beau - $0 Bankrupt next to $650 / Rebecca - dud C on green $500 where WC was (possibly even $3500) R3: Well, that was an interesting way to start this round...what was weird, however, was that the audience was cheering before the Wheel stopped on the MDW, and not so much after the fact... R4: Good thing Beau didn't drift into Bankrupt. I was actually kind of hoping he would at least dud so he wouldn't have to keep spinning. R5: That makes FIVE null cycles so far this week (L/D/M?). -__- Pat's attitude noticeably changes when the C called as well. MDBR: He better be glad that wasn't the million, or he never would have heard the end of it. A buzzer-beaten $1M loss surely could have made headlines, too (Are you still reading this forum, Gawker?  ). How was that retro BR lost? I'm not too far from Nyack. Nice to see someone from there win.  This audience appears to react more for bad stuff than good, but that's defintely better than nothing, though the double trip hit in R1 ended up being kind of awkward, and the double MDW hit could have been much better... Here's a note from Rebecca's blog... She was definitely a good sport. Kristy, however, was not. She was very noticeably bitter during the final tally, and you could tell that she didn't really have a good time despite her saying so to Pat (remember that a lot of her bad luck didn't air). I'm sure the man in the basement was happy to be able to climb those stairs twice in one week after being stuck down there for almost three months. This is clearly a budget week with all the editing and pretty tough puzzles. A shutout will not be surprising at all should it happen tomorrow... Rating: 5/10

Good maingame up until that BR... Tossups: Great job by Beau in sweeping those Tossups. R1: The P's and L's were unclaimed, but Beau's got that featured trip. R2: I loved how Rebeca booed at that BANKRUPT she got from the MW. R3: I do believe that's the first-ever instance of back-to-back MDW landings. R4: Beau's last spin scared me a bit, but he got lucky as well as that C call. R5: Great, yet another null cycle edited out...  Bonus Round: I knew it immediately w/ the RSTLNE. Solving the puzzle one second too late is always depressing, as Beau showed us. EPISODE RATING: 6 out of 10 also |

That thing in R1 wasn't actually a late reveal. They dubbed in a shot of the board probably originally filmed during the first spin, because Vanna was clapping throughout before any gameplay even happened. Wonder what went wrong on the original reveal...

When Beau got the bonus puzzle - a second too late, I just put my face into my hands and went, "That was the answer." As for me, I wouldn't have come up with it.
Now in Rebecca's case, what happened with her should be a lesson. If you're on the show, want to solve a puzzle but have yet to do so, and you land on a Mystery Wedge, take the money, especially if you don't have the money to buy any vowels.

I think Kristy might have been angry because Beau kept winning so much, or because she felt like she may have been/was screwed out of something.
Comparing the two, I think Kristy was more honest about her feelings than Rebecca was.

Reading Rebecca's blog entry makes me think that Kristy, while honest, was classless. No one comes to Stage 11 wanting to lose, but it happens to 2/3 of the people who get there. Further, sometimes you get your butt kicked by a dominant player. That's why you practice, practice, practice and prepare for the show.
Think back and consider the facts...you're one of only about 16,000 people who have played the nighttime version of America's top game show. That's a lot to be proud of. In fact, you had to win to get that far. You could have had a lot of great stories to tell once you got home, but instead you had to be bitter about $3,300. Rebecca was happy just to have the experience, and I really think that's the attitude any Wheel player should have - hell, I would've done the show for free! Further, to prove how grateful I am, I vowed to donate a portion of my winnings to charity.
I'm sure even Beau, Joe, and Audra had a few moments they wish hadn't happened, but they counter those thoughts with the pleasant memories they had. Besides, even Pat Sajak said that more people will be interested in what your experience is like rather than how much you won (I had meetings at two different schools today, and at both places, I had a number of staff members and parents ask me about my trip to LA, so this is certainly true). There are many mantras I live by, but two of them really apply here, and I approached my taping with those attitudes.
1. "You never get a second chance to make a first impression." I hope Kristy got the hell out of Dodge with her sour grapes attitude, because I'm sure it would've upset the remaining contestants or (even worse) the contestant coordinators, who go to extremes to make sure your day at Stage 11 is a special one. I've mentioned it before, but you develop such a great camaradarie with the other players backstage that you have no choice but to be pleasant around them.
2. "Only regret the things you did NOT do, not the things you DID do." You can't change the past, and in the end, it's just a game. Regardless of what opinions you might have, facts are facts: Wheel is a once-in-a-lifetime experience, and you have a 2/3 chance of losing, but it's extremely rewarding. For instance, Rebecca is getting more publicity. Once my show airs, I think my sales calls will be so much easier to make and my SAT classes and tutoring will be in greater demand. Further, you get to brag to your friends and family about an amazing day that you'll never forget (and your friends probably won't let you live down, thanks to the miracle of recording)...unless you prefer to forget it because you're bitter over losing.
Even though I'm a very competitive person, I disliked Kristy's attitude. If you're expressing bitterness on stage and backstage, you don't really belong there.

I am so hurt by all the negative comments about me. I was searching for the episode so I could show a friend and was appalled by what I read. First of all right before our show the contestants surprised me by helping my family and I with paying for us to stay another night so we didn't have to drive all the way back to West Virginia right after the show. So I was crying right before we went out. I have been nervous since before I got there and shaking the whole time I was there. I really enjoyed myself on the show. Don't get me wrong EVERYONE wants to win big, I didn't but I won something and for that I am very thankful. Beau did an excellent job and Becca you did also. I am so upset because we lifted each up and talked about the show in positive ways. I DID NOT SAY everything that you said I did and that was very wrong of you to say that and give me a bad name. Pat was very uplifting he could see how nervous as shaky I was and you too could also. I was NEVER BITTER. I was excited just to be able to be a contestant on the show that I watched with my grandmother since I was little. Was I salty when I said a letter that wasn't up there yes, anybody would be. I was NEVER angry. Beau rocked the house that night and did an excellent job, he was really good. I practiced a lot but when you are up there with all those people watching you, it makes you forget or say the wrong thing when you are nervous.
I would like to give a special thanks to the Wheel of Fortune crew for everything that they did for us and for the experience of a lifetime. My family and I talk about it all the time. I was tired and nervous all at the same time and might not have smiled as much as I probably should have but I am not not was I ever BITTER or ANGRY about anything. I thank God for allowing us to find a way to get there because Lord knows it was a struggle. It took family and friends chipping in but we made it and we were extremely happy to be there.

On the off-chance that kristynelloms does end up reading this...because I hate to see something like this go unanswered, even after five months... Welcome, Kristy, and I'm sorry you had to come out of the woodwork the way you did after having read these things. Thank you for telling your side of the story; up to this point it was one we hadn't heard, and now that we've been able to hear your side of the equation I'm hoping those who choose to comment on this recap thread in the future will treat you with a little more respect. Allow me to apologize on behalf of the entire staff and membership of the forum. At the same time, I hope you've found it in you to forgive Rebecca for her impulsive remarks; she was a college student at the time, and--having been at that stage not too long ago myself, I feel I'm not terribly out of line when I say this--college students are prone to misread situations. Judging from her tone, I wonder if she was just frustrated that she couldn't have been the one to cheer you up for winning more than she did, without realizing there was more to the story than what she saw. But this is only speculation on my part. Let this be a lesson to the entire membership, especially when commenting on contestant performance: our remarks on these boards are, for the most part, permanently and publicly available. Let us not assume things about contestants until we get to hear their side of the story. |
