R1: Nice of the producers/writers to finally give us a puzzle from today's music generation.  R2: What an awesome round for the Hamiltons (spinning top dollar three times in a row)!  R3: No car in their future, but another nice trip for the Hamiltons. R4: This is one of the bad times that a $6K Final Spin came up, but the Broylses made the most of that round. Bonus Round: I got it w/ the Hamiltons' choices. If only they thought of furniture, as Pat said after the buzzer, and BGHO would've likely done it for them. MY EP. RATING: 7 out of 10

The Hamiltons were hot while they lasted- it's not often you see the same player(s) spin top dollar four times in a row! I wish they had called the H's- maybe that might've been enough to end the current BR drought. I knew it after their choices appeared, but not that quickly.

R1: I wasn't expecting a song THAT recent!  Thanks for listening, writers! To contrast to Pat's joke, they actually don't play that song on my local stations, at least not yet. Sometimes they wait until a bit after its release, probably because it'd be cheaper or something.
R2: Awww. I thought we finally had a concrete rule for when ampersands get used in Same Names.  The starts of both linking terms were 9+ letters and they still used AND.
R4: Nice to see the blue team finally get to play again.
Wow, Pat didn't finesse that at all. 
BR: Had it with the M. Wayoshi'd favored FGHI combo probably would have been one of the few that could do it for them.
Hmm, I wonder if there were any interesting conversations backstage before this taping...
Intern: Harry, some people on Buy a Vowel Boards say we should use recent songs more often.
Harry: Eh, I don't know...Is there anything good that relates to our theme?
Intern: I think there's that Rihanna song...
Pat: Oh, you mean "Diamonds"? Yeah, that song's on the radio like every 5 minutes. I'm sure the players will know it. I could even make a joke about how overplayed it is.
Harry: OK, fine. But just for today.
Intern: Oh, another thing...they figured out the formula to Same Name. Do you still want to go with "ENGAGEMENT & WRESTLING RING" today?
Harry: Get rid of the ampersand. Then we'll see how they respond. 
This is just an affectionate joke of course. We all appreciate the efforts of the hard-working production team that keeps this show going.
I find it really ridiculous that even when top dollar is hit THREE TIMES consecutively, the majority of the audience STILL doesn't care!  While the second and third hits did get minor reactions (with the second slightly bigger), this whole round was WAY underhyped. And I'm not just talking about tonight. Every time this happens in Culver City save for one occasion back in S26, there is NEVER any reasonable reaction for any of the hits. The audience is what helped make this one of the most memorable rounds in recent years. They were on the verge of a standing ovation here. RI-DICULOUS!

Oh, a very interesting tidbit from tonight that I feel is worth noting in a separate post for now...
Only a 1/3 section of the layout got any action tonight. In other words, the only wedges hit all game were, going clockwise, the 8-wedge stretch from the red $800 to the green $500 that houses the Wild Card.

Toss-Ups: For once, nothing to comment on here, but the couples looked like they interacted well together.
R1: For the record, I wasn't able to place the lyrics until Pat made his joke (I don't listen to much of today's music, sorry...I prefer '80s music). Tough penalties, but Team 1 had a chance to make up for that 1/2 Car loss...
R2: ...or so I thought. Bankrupt sends more cardboard from Team 1 to Pat. But, Team 2 was on a tear! I'm starting to regret not picking THREE OF THE SAME SPACE HIT or CONSECUTIVE TOP DOLLAR HITS for BAVGO. Getting $3,500 three times in a row was damn impressive. Matt certainly paid attention to his spinning power (not easy to get the Wheel all the way around), and Karlie nailed those multiples with ease! The only gripe I had was calling a huge multiple on the Wild Card. If it was me, I would've called the less common (but still safe) D for the Wild Card.
R3: Well-played Perfect Round for the Prize Puzzle! The team made some nice, logical calls and wanted to pad their lead even more. Smart play getting all the multiples.
R4: Had it on the N! Nice to see a $6,000 Speedround, even if it was just a "Get SOME money on the board" finale. Fortunately, Team 3 was able to take advantage and leave with a nice total. Team 1 gets the obligatory couples upgrade to Pity Two Thousand.
Bonus: Had DANISH at first, then realized that that would probably be classified as FOOD AND DRINK. Fortunately, though, I had FINISH. I have to agree that FGHI would've been the magic combo, but even then, MAHOGANY is still a tough word to get. I didn't even have it with Pat's clue ("Think furniture..."). Still, you can't complain when you missed out on LESS than you won! And, not only that, but a handsome nest egg for the baby, too!
Overall: Very lucky gameplay today. Marred slightly by the lack of audience reaction to the first $3,500 hit (thank God they reacted heavily to the three multiples, the subsequent two $3,500 hits, and the $27K+ solve) and the difficult Bonus puzzle. Another good "yell at the screen" game for 7/10.

Heavily? The one $3500 hit yesterday (and a few others this season) have had way more reaction than that. I guess those examples would be considered "Extreme"?  The only gripe I had was calling a huge multiple on the Wild Card. If it was me, I would've called the less common (but still safe) D for the Wild Card. But they give you $500 per letter with it now, so "wasting" multiples on cardboard isn't such a big deal anymore. Good thing, too, IMO, though I could have done without awarding money with the prize wedge, TBH. |

^ So, I may have exaggerated. Maybe the cheering was drowned out somewhat by my own, but it was nice to hear some reaction, especially after getting NOTHING on the first $3,500.
As for the strategy, I'm well aware of the $500 for cardboard rule (which I like, by the way). To be fair, the N was the first letter called that round, so who would have any idea that there would be 5 of them? Still, I'd try to save the big calls for later. Who knows? They might have had the Wild Card later on and hit a biggie, then cash in the Wild Card. However, it falls right into the Bankrupt Trash, rendering my point moot.
