Opening clip: "German Occupation of Paris" puzzle, November 14, 1994 — same clip from October 25, 2012, but unlike last time, the 1994 solve cue is dubbed over
$1,000 Toss-Up: On the Map _ _ _ / F _ A _ C I _ _ O _ _ Y
Chelsea solves SAN FRANCISCO BAY.
Chelsea Duran, Boulder, CO, social media manager for a wine company, married to Andrew, once drove from Anchorage, AK to Miami, FL over the course of two weeks Rich Gannon, Knoxville, TN, married to Joanie, has one son named Clay, owns a self-storage business, likes to ski Kristin Hansen, Fort Lauderdale, FL, entrepeneur, recently engaged
$2,000 Toss-Up: Occupation
F O _ E S T R _ N G _ _
Chelsea solves FOREST RANGER.
Prize on Wheel: Bernardus Lodge & Winery, Carmel Valley, CA, $5,790
Jackpot Round: The 70's
Chelsea picks up the ½ Car next to the pink $900 with R. She uses the money underneath to buy O, A, and E, but the last of those isn't up there. Rich ends up on the ½ Car, but doesn't find any T's — nor does Kristin find any S's on $550.
Chelsea buys I, then picks up the California trip with M, before finishing off the vowels with U. After calling G on $550, she hits Lose a Turn. Rich picks up the N on $900, then the P on $600, before Lose a Turn gets him too. Kristin goes for the V on $900, then follows it up with Lose a Turn number three.
P R O G R A M M I N G _ O U R / V _ R
Perhaps fearing another Lose a Turn, Chelsea solves PROGRAMMING YOUR VCR for $2,850.
Duds: E (Chelsea), T (Rich) Lose a Turn: Chelsea, Rich, Kristin Left behind in Jackpot: $10,000
Kristin: $0 Chelsea: $11,640 + ½ Car tag Rich: $0
Wayne Brady wishes the show a happy 30th anniversary from the set of Let's Make a Deal. ==== Mystery Round: Same Name
Rich hits the Mystery Wedge next to the Million Dollar Wedge. After calling T, he decides to flip it… but there's a Bankrupt on the other side.
Kristin gets her own ½ Car tag (next to the pink $900) with N, then buys A. She passes Bankrupt for the $300, and calls D. Next, it's the Beach Bikes gift tag with R, then purchases of I and E. Last, it's S on $500 and M on $400.
_ E M _ N M E R I N _ _ E / A N D S _ E E T I E _ I E
She solves LEMON MERINGUE AND SWEETIE PIE for her own $2,580 + Gift Tag + ½ Car.
Bankrupt: Rich (reverse of Mystery Wedge)
Kristin: $3,850 + ½ Car tag Chelsea: $11,640 + ½ Car tag Rich: $0
Retro Bonus Round It's a Thing from 1996 (likely October or November — pastel category strips), and a male chose G B P O:
B R _ _ N
He solved BRAIN. ==== Prize Puzzle: Phrase
Kristin tries S on $600, then buys I. Next, it's T on $500 and a purchase of A. N and R are her next picks on $400 and $800, after which she buys O, U, and E to finish off the vowels. Her last spin is $500 for the L.
She solves IT'S A JUNGLE OUT THERE for $2,550. No cars tonight, but she gets a trip to Costa Rica. (Springs Resort & Spa, $6,700)
PERFECT ROUND
Kristin: $13,100 Chelsea: $11,640 Rich: shutout alert ==== $3,000 Toss-Up:
_ _ _ _ E _ W A _ _ _ _ _ _ _ N
Chelsea's wrong with GEORGE WASHINGTON.
_ _ _ Z E _ W A _ _ _ _ _ _ O N
But Kristen gets it right with DENZEL WASHINGTON.
Round 4: Person
This round also belongs to Kristin. N on $600, T on $500, then a purchase of E. R and H on $550 and $700. A purchase of O, F on $300, then an I. Her next spin is for the last vowel, A, on Free Play. And she finishes off with C on $700.
C H A I R _ A N / O F T H E / _ O A R _
She solves CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD for $3,850 more.
PERFECT ROUND #2
Round 5: Character (strip is in Gotham when the puzzle is revealed, Arial after Final Spin)
Final Spin: $450 (The wide shot is a re-shoot on the Round 1 template.)
Chelsea: R (jump cut — already?!) Rich: S Kristin: H (another jump cut) Chelsea: D Rich: B Kristin: G
G R _ _ _ G _ D D _ S S
She solves GREEK GODDESS for $2,900 more.
Aired duds: H (Kristin), B (Rich) Unaired duds: Likely a ton
End totals: Kristin: $22,850 Chelsea: $11,640 Rich: Pity Thousand™ ==== $100,000 Bonus Round
She has four family members in the audience.
The Bonus Wheel ends up on the W in WIN — a good letter, she says — and her puzzle is a Place:
_ _ R E _ _ _ S E
M, F, D, U is an interesting mix, but it gives her some help:
F _ R E _ _ U S E
She gets FIREHOUSE before the timer for $30,000 more. End total $52,850.

Chelsea started out well in the first segment, but fizzled out save for the $3K T-U. I'm a little surprised they didn't make any Rich Gannon football jokes.
That was an easy bonus puzzle for Kristin; it was either that or WAREHOUSE.

Good show tonight. I didn't think the BR puzzle to be warehouse if it wasn't firehouse.
Wait a minute, there were 2 players who won $10,000 or more, and they cut to Pat not once, but twice in speed-up, which can only mean one thing for me. It's a BAVGO, dammit!

R1: Bad luck this round. A good puzzle, though common duds. We actually had a full go-around, but the fact that the first in the string was a bad vowel prevented it from being cut, except if the episode ran terribly overtime. This was also a rare case of the Jackpot reaching $10K without $2500 ever getting hit. Pat convinced Kristin to go again because he knew if she solved it would have been redundant (spingle). He does that often when people get $x00 from one letter ("Want to go again?"), one of his "player nudges" I actually like. What a shame she actually tried to avoid that redundancy. The crowd was pulling for her, too. R2: Aren't Same Names usually formatted so that AND is always the second word (SWEETIE AND LEMON MERINGUE PIE)? Interesting that T was the first call, but it still makes no sense that they'll continue to use ampersands elsewhere, but refuse to use them anymore in the category that was responsible for ampersands getting used in puzzles... R5: Major fail here! >_< Did they seriously just leave it set for the next show and decide not to change it and think nobody would notice? It also looked like Pat's real Final Spin hit the same Bankrupt he did yesterday, since it's impossible for his strength to go all the way around and then to $450 from red $700 unless he super-finessed it. Pat: Guys, are we ready to start the Bonus Round? Where's the Bonus Wheel? Mark Corwin: Actually, Pat, could you get the other players back onstage and re-shoot the Final Spin? Pat: But they already have the Wheel set up for the next show. Mark: That's OK. Just spin it as-is. Pat: But who ever heard of the Final Spin in Round 1? We better take everything off and add the $5000 back. Mark: Effort. :effort:
And the Pat jump cuts so early on...it was a pretty evil puzzle, though. Concerning the unaired duds...T and N are givens, and likely L...and C, F, M? I'm guessing this is one of those puzzles that caused Ficitonal Character to become more generic? BR: Key F call on an easy puzzle gives her the deserved win! I had that from the start, but also figured it could be WAREHOUSE as she was calling her letters. Goodbye, consistency...and any chance of future retro cues being left intact. -_- Hearing the current solve cue in old episodes is way too out-of-place. Watch them change "Big Wheels" to the modern rock intro theme. Good show tonight, though I'm surprised we got as much gameplay as we did. Some of it seemed to drag out. Rating: 6/10

Kristin really shouldn't have been going for it in R1 with a big bank right next to her. You're not going to overcome a 5-digit deficit even early in the game that often, but she ended up taking over anyways, so I'll let it go... I was very surprised to see a decades puzzle not be pop culture. Also, I struggle when the rare acronym comes up like VCR. ... Pretty good BR play... again? Good BR play?

Not as good as last night, but still a good episode anyway...
Tossups: So much for Chelsea's chance at a Tossup sweep...
R1: Rough round thanks to that string of LATs, but Chelsea has won that featured CA trip. I also liked the fact that Kristin wanted to avoid that redundancy, but it's a shame it backfired on her.
R2: Tough luck on that Mystery gamble for Rich.
R3-R5: Kristin sure got on a roll and won the game no problem.
Bonus Round: Yes, this was either one answer (WAREHOUSE, which was what I thought first) or the other, but Kristin's choices lead her to the right one! Good job!
MY EP. RATING: 7 out of 10

R1: Yowch, everyone got stopped by the nasty LaT. Aside from that, a lucky break for Chelsea! And she did pretty well here!
R2: Not a bad idea going for the Mystery if you have nothing to lose...sorry to see the Mystery gamble didn't work out so well for Rich. A pretty good start for Kristin, though.
R3: Too bad Kristin couldn't find the other 1/2 Car. But at least she'll get to enjoy the trip to Costa Rica!
R5: That must've been one of the weirdest Final Spins I've seen; I got confused when I saw the 1/2 Car on the Wheel. But congratulations to Kristin on securing her win!
BR: I've never seen a contestant get as excited as Kristin did over landing on a particular space. My first guess was WAREHOUSE. I actually didn't even consider FIREHOUSE until she began saying her answer. Regardless, Kristin played this one really nicely!
A pretty good episode overall. I'll give this one a 7/10.

I know the VCR has been around for a long time, but I thought most people were using a VCR by the 1980s. It cost an arm and a foot in the 70s, but once the price went down a bit more people had one, which is when programming of a VCR became more prevalent. I felt that the puzzle was a bit mis-categorized.
Very nice puzzle selection tonight, however.
Originally guessed "Brawn" for the Retro BR.

Time for my memories of the show.
The first Toss-Up had to be reshot because during the first take, the background screen flickered right as Chelsea was beginning her interview. Someone in the booth came over the PA system and announced this, and it took the crew about 10 minutes to decide whether to shoot the Toss-Up from the beginning or shoot from the start of the interview. Pat was somewhat annoyed with all the back-and-forth and did the "gun-to-the-head" gesture, which was funny and a tad disturbing. They ultimately decided to reshoot it from the time Pat said "The category is..." and the crew instructed Chelsea to be the ONLY one to ring in and only do so after a few letters appeared (legally, she scored the $1,000 on the first take and could not have that taken away).
I'm pretty sure the Final Spin was reshot, too (just the actual act of spinning). I also remember the contestants having a devil of a time coming up with GREEK GODDESS. I had it with the R, S, and D. Mario, the duds that you listed were correct, to the best of my knowledge. I don't know the exact order, but I'm fairly certain that those were the letters guessed. I was silently muttering "call a G, and you've got it..." from my seat. I also thought the Bonus was WAREHOUSE after the RSTLNE came up, and had it with Kristin's choices. Here are my player memories.
CHELSEA: Pretty nice young lady and fairly confident in the game. The reason why she said GEORGE WASHINGTON on the third Toss-Up was that we actually used that as a Speed-Up puzzle in our dress rehearsal game. She and Kristin hit it off from the moment we all met in the hotel lobby. They were virtually inseparable.
RICH: I was sorry to see him win the Pity Thousand. He got buried by two very competitive players. With his booming voice and gentlemanly manner, he was a cool guy to be around. We found out that we auditioned the same day (but not at the same time), and he was surprised to find out that I did NOT attend the Wheelmobile event in Knoxville, and that I got a direct invitation to audition. He was still smiling after his game, though, and had no regrets. Although, I kinda wish he hadn't rushed me during one of our bathroom breaks...
KRISTIN: Don't remember too much about her, but she was very happy to win, giving everyone high-fives and hugs as she returned to the audience. When I asked her about the Bonus Round puzzle and how most of us thought it was going to be WAREHOUSE, she said that she didn't really consider that as a possibility.

The first Toss-Up had to be reshot God dammit, this really makes me mad as hell. How the hell would a slight fail on the dumb background thingy turn people off from Wheel? Just let it frickin' go you dumbos. This technically means my toss-up stats (yeah, I'm 3 months behind ATM, but eventually... ) may be a bit diluted by these redos. A few letters, no one is going to care to redo it exactly as it was (and/or in other similar cases, blanks/missolves were just wiped out). Anyways, re: BR - I aced it right away, never even thought of WARE-. Interesting puzzle where either is fine and about the same difficulty, and I think a bit random what came to mind first for each individual person.

I'm pretty sure we've had a couple anecdotes about this editing over the semi-faulty background screen before, too. I swear some dumbo over there on Wheel staff is being too perfectionist on an item that many of us here don't really think adds much to the set.

There's a quick and simple solution to what seems to be an ongoing problem with the video wall. It's so genius, I'm sure they haven't thought if it...but if they did, they'd awe in wonder at how easy it is. Ready for it? ...here it is: Get rid of the damn video wall, and get physical props which don't break.

Solid show, if nothing particularly interesting happened.
R1 baffled me when all the vowels were called and the last word was still __R. Turns out it was an acronym, and for an item that I hadn't seen in forever.
I also thought TU2 was GEORGE WASHINGTON, at least until the E came up where it did.
I had the BR puzzle pegged as FIREHOUSE from RSTLNE (never thought of WAREHOUSE). Good F call by Kristin to seal the deal (the U helped too, I guess).

All the failure was on the editing side, really -- dubbing over the 1994 puzzle-solve cue, the uber-laziness* in reshooting the Final Spin (why would they do that in the first place?), and the inconsistency of the category strip before and during Speed-Up? Wheel's officially told consistency to go **** itself. The first Toss-Up had to be reshot because during the first take, the background screen flickered right as Chelsea was beginning her interview. Someone in the booth came over the PA system and announced this, and it took the crew about 10 minutes to decide whether to shoot the Toss-Up from the beginning or shoot from the start of the interview. ...Why? Please, somebody explain to me how "video glitches right as first interview begins" = "reshoot first Toss-Up". Doing a show live-to-tape isn't evil, nor is leaving in a (very) minor glitch. If contestants are going "Dafuq?" at your decisions, Wheel, there's a problem and it isn't with the contestants or their coordinators. Pat was somewhat annoyed with all the back-and-forth and did the "gun-to-the-head" gesture, which was funny and a tad disturbing. I don't blame him. I honestly don't. I swear some dumbo over there on Wheel staff is being too perfectionist on an item that many of us here don't really think adds much to the set. Two names come to mind, and precedent plus chain of command suggests the one that's higher up. (*On the other hand, it's pretty much the long-since-discontinued opening spin. )

Finally got the chance to watch an episode, much closer to real-time. Interesting to see the comments about the Bonus Round. Like some other people, I hadn't even considered WAREHOUSE, but I'm almost certain I was stuck on FIREHOUSE before Kristin called her F.

Geez, Daniel, take a chill pill! To be fair, these were the only two stopdowns and reshoots that took place the entire taping day. I think the reason why they wanted to reshoot the first Toss-Up was because they weren't sure if the flickering began during the Toss-Up. I was watching Kristin and Rich's faces as they were told to deliberately NOT ring in during the reshoot, and they were a little confused by it all.
Pat's reaction was meant in good fun, I'm sure. After all, he's been at the railing for 31 years, and has seen and heard it all. Still, I don't think he expected having to reshoot the whole Toss-Up. Plus, he was a little confused at having to reshoot the Final Spin. I did not notice that the Round 1 stuff was already on the Wheel, but I did notice that Pat said "vowels worth nothing, consonants worth $800 billion and we're finally done with this."

^It works and looks good, hence they won't use it because...because. Geez, Daniel, take a chill pill! Hey, I'm fine. It's just that I've heard a lot of behind-the-scenes stuff that caused pointless stopdowns and retakes plus things that were inexplicably cut from the finished product...and as a result I get facepalm/headdesk irritated. I guess what I'm saying is that Wheel hasn't really given off a feeling of live-to-tape in a good long while, and it suffers as a result. I'd normally be getting irritated at puzzles and/or gameplay, but there was nothing bad about either in this episode. Plus, [Pat] was a little confused at having to reshoot the Final Spin. I did not notice that the Round 1 stuff was already on the Wheel, but I did notice that Pat said "vowels worth nothing, consonants worth $800 billion and we're finally done with this." Okay, that's funny.
