Even between 1987-2000, they were still more common than they are today.

I think the number of sweeps is lesser today because of the Toss-Ups. Back when it was red-yellow-blue-repeat, red always had a slight advantage since they were the most likely to start two rounds, while their opponents would usually only get to start one round each. So you get games like this where red ends up with the sweep because his opponents lose their turns at the right time. But the Toss-Ups shuffle things around a bit, so the "player who starts the round" advantage is downplayed.
