I'm turning a quarter-century old later tonight (Yep, 25, at 10:18 Chicago time), and I can't even begin to tell you how appalled I am with the way things went on tonight's show, especially with Shawn. He did nothing, I repeat, NOTHING to deserve what had happened to him! All of his letter choices were in the puzzle, every single one of them! He certainly would've gotten at least one or two puzzles tonight had the Wheel and the ladies given him a chance. Now would he have gotten the bonus puzzle had it been him and he chose the same letters? It's likely. In fact, I was able to get tonight's bonus puzzle easily after the four letters. Tonight deserves low ratings. What I saw tonight is exactly what I do not want to see tomorrow night!

I bet that Bonus Round was set up to play out exactly as it ended up happening. Harry (or whoever wrote it) knew two things: One, that "huge impact" is a more common phrase than "high impact", and two, that many contestants disregard RSTLNE when blurting out guesses. Therefore, the average contestant would shout "HUGE IMPACT" with confidence then spend the rest of the time thinking "It's not HUGE? What else could it be?..." I had the right answer right after Andrea's letters were revealed, but I did say to myself, "Wait, could it be HUGE IMPACT--wait, no, no E." I never thought we'd get an unthemed $1,000 Toss-Up on a Disney week! These are the kinds of weeks where nearly every maingame puzzle is themed, usually. Maybe the original TU1 got thrown out? Surprising that only R2 was themed and somewhat R3, which shockingly contained no adjectives. I'll admit I kind of like Disney puzzles because they're so easy for me to solve. R1 seemed way too recently familiar to me. Indeed it was used verbatim in late Season 29... I'll say it again. If we get no Frozen-related puzzles and every single themed puzzle is only related to old Disney films (although I guess 90s films like Aladdin, Lion King, and Beauty and the Beast aren't that old especially considering they came out after 99% of the songs for Song Title/Lyrics puzzles on other episodes ), then the writers really are out of touch considering everyone in the world and their dog have been subjected to it one way or another. Seeing how the franchise is forced into like every retail store known to man, you would think they would force a Frozen puzzle. Then again, if we're only getting one Disney-themed puzzle per show, that lessens the odds. [NO LET IT GO JOKES!]

^ Personally, I'm hoping for a Big Hero 6-related puzzle of some kind.

^ I figured you would. BAYMAX would be quite the devilish Bonus Round puzzle. I kind of doubt they will, but it'd be nice. I could see "BIG HERO SIX" as a Toss-Up or R5+ puzzle.

^ My ex-recto theory is that they're planning to retire it, and just like any other midseason change (e.g. Mystery moving to Round 2) it's showing up out of order.

I really doubt 1/2 Car is getting retired but its absence during this week is bizarre. Anyone who was at last week's tapings, were the 1/2 Car tags used?

If my exercise routine has a huge impact on my health, then it's a high-impact routine. This is what threw me off about the final puzzle. By not including a hyphen, putting the words on separate lines, and not giving a noun for the phrase to modify, it made the solution look more like the nominal "huge impact". From the Corpus of Contemporary American English, accessed through corpus.byu.edu/coca/huge impact: 297 hits high-impact: 208 hits high impact: 62 hits Interesting to note that six of the "high impact" hits were Clinique products, like "High Impact Mascara". It's like the reverse issue when they do lists without commas, which will make me expect a modifier when it's just nouns.

^ This is a very good point - this is not the first time they've fooled around with hyphens to end up with the lesser-seen version of the idiom in question. While the letters were all easy, they were definitely kinda fishing for a loss today, there's no doubt.
Back to the 1/2 Car, doubles Disney taped right after and obviously there will be no 1/2 Car then, either, which is fine. But notably there was no car in studio either... so it's all-cash BR both these weeks too? Did they just get lazy on this taping week?

When we were prepping for the tapings (I'm a contestant on Wednesday), going over the rules and special wedges, etc, they felt obliged to tell us that there wouldn't be a 1/2 Car wedge on the wheel, and it would be all cash prizes for the bonus rounds. No one questioned it at the time. A few of us discussed it later on, and we came to the consensus that the Disney Vacations theme dictated the lack of a car. Even this episode's gift tag prize was a luggage retailer, perfect for that Disney vacation someone's going to win.
I don't think they would intentionally get rid of the 1/2 Car space. It creates drama - that little extra ounce of excitability once someone hits that second half. That hits you every time. You can't help but root for that person. But they can't give away cars they don't have, so I suppose if there were dealership contract renegotiations, or sponsor issues, that could dictate a change. I don't know how that side works, to be honest, but I would see a funding complication as a completely plausible scenario, as well.

It's still annoying that the rules are inconsistent week to week. It's not a fair opportunity to everyone to win. But I understand that most are willing to forego that inequality just to be on the show and it's mostly a hardcore fan pet peeve. Good luck tomorrow!

Also, Mickey introduced Pat & Vanna, while Pat & Vanna read the Prize and Prize Puzzle copy. Why did Jim even bother showing up?

Someone had to entertain the crowd between episodes! His collection of cringe-inducing Laffy-Taffy-worthy Disney jokes seemingly had no end. In case anyone wasn't aware, he is the narrator of the commercial in the original Monsters, Inc., and he performed those few lines for the audience to a raucous ovation. He also had his Toy Story Woody Mouse Ears on backwards for over an hour.

It sounds like they either altered his voice, or made him deliver it differently than his usual announcer voice.

He delivers it differently, but it's definitely not altered, because his live performance of it sounded EXACTLY like the movie version. There was no mistaking he was the guy.

Ah, here goes this season's first Disney week! Yeah, I'm kinda surprised the 1st Toss-Up puzzle had virtually nothing to do with Disney or sea and shore vacations. That's (sorta) a step forward. Round 1 - two W's, Rachel...and a house minimum solve? Pat's explanation was just...oh boy. But the five W's in Round 2 sure helped Andrea gain more ground as the game progressed. Nice "Finding Nemo" plug! I think the Aulani trip is gonna be the Prize Puzzle trip all week long. And I've never heard of RAINBOW REEF before... Clever of Andrea to call the X in Round 4 and seal her win - I would've called the V or even the I's to be sure (I got the second word with the T's). And poor, poor Shawn...he deserved way better. My salute to him and his son. Not that many themed puzzles, eh? That's (definitely) another step forward. Doggone it. I so wanted a Bonus Round win - maybe Andrea would've gotten it if she called the H's. My rating: 6
