Today's my day off from work, so I figured I should get my second and final English Countryside Week episode recapped for all of you! I'm certain that this is the April 8, 1997 episode, which aired on Tuesday.
Carrie Shadley is from Land O’Lakes, Florida. She’s a senior at the University of South Florida, majoring in math communications. She’d like to get into special events management when she graduates. She’s also active on campus with the Public Relations Student Society of America and served on the homecoming committee.
Bob Blitho is from Cambridge, Ontario, Canada. He’s a firefighter with the Toronto West Fire Department and is a single father to a 12-year-old daughter. In his free time, he coaches girls’ softball, plays guitar and enjoys a little golf and hockey.
Ruthie Del Nose-Peters is from Gilbert, Arizona, but originally from Akron, Ohio. She’s married to her “wonderful husband” Pat and has twin 14-year-old boys, Caleb and Michael. She likes to water ski and snow ski in her spare time.

But now it’s time to move on to round two and a new prize from Charlie. On Rodeo Drive in California is Bang & Olufsen, a technology store that has a complete audio system. That system plays CD, tape and radio, and with the simple wave of a hand, the music will start playing. The value of the prize is $3,000.

Bob buys two A’s before spinning again, getting $1,800 thanks to two R’s on $900. He buys three O’s, and nearly hits BANKRUPT, but the peg holds on to $500. As Vanna reveals three L’s, Pat tells Bob, “I was sure you were doomed there!” Bob spins again, lands on $700 and gets two W’s for his efforts. He hits $250 and gets three D’s, then hits $250 again and finds a solitary F. But it seems like the nerves may be getting to Bob, as he says “I’m going to have to spin” with just a few letters left in the puzzle. He hits FREE SPIN and stumbles a bit before guessing two S’s, allowing him to pick up the disc. His next spin lands on $800, but he takes his time and calls a bad B seconds before gets buzzed out. Pat reminds him of his FREE SPIN, which he decides to use. Bob buys three I’s, which may help him, but now all the vowels are gone, so he has to spin or solve. He lands on $2,500, but by now, he’s completely frozen. Bob gets buzzed out for taking too long, but he would have lost his turn anyway, as he guessed an M, which was not in the puzzle, just after the buzzer rang.

Pat comforts Bob, telling him that sometimes in the studio contestants just draw a blank, and had he been on the couch at home, he probably would have gotten it. The host tells Bob to hang in there, as there’s still plenty of time left.

The Princess Cruise liner will take him to the eastern Caribbean over seven days, where the stops include St. Thomas, St. Croix and Nassau. There’s also a private island owned by Princess Cruises that Bob will get to visit. Altogether, it’s worth $5,350. And just like that, Bob is now in the lead with $6,050. Pat says it’s redemption.

Additional Notes:
- As I said in my other English Countryside recap, I don't have Friday Finals recorded, but I did watch the episode. Despite it being 22 years since I saw the episode, I definitely remember Bob returning on Friday. However, I can't tell you how successful he was, as that I do not remember.
- One of the other contestants can be heard chuckling after Bob says, "I'll solve" in round three. I can't tell if it's Ruthie or Carrie, but there's definitely a chuckle.
- Pat mentions that they tried to give the $10,000 away "the other night" but were unsuccessful. I assume this was probably from a few weeks earlier, as all evidence I have suggests this is only the Tuesday show, and nobody landed on it Monday.
- At the time Bob got buzzed out, he had $16,500 in front of him, which included the $10,000 prize.
- Likewise, Ruthie had $19,350 in front of her when Carrie solved the speed-up round.
- Pat sings the opening line of the Beverly Hillbillies theme song after Carrie solves the speed-up.
