I'm back with my final recap of Season 14! This time around, I'm recapping my first charity show - the Friday Finals of Celebrities and Moms Week, which aired from May 5-9 in 1997.
Let's get reintroduced to our celebrities and their moms!
Actor Thomas Calabro, from Melrose Place, and his mom Constance won $29,800 on Wednesday’s show. They’re playing for YAI/The National Institute for People with Disabilities.
Model Kathy Ireland, and her mom Barbara, won $45,000 on Tuesday’s show. They are playing for the United Mitochondrial Disease Foundation on behalf of the Permanent Charities Committee.
Actor Steve Burton, from General Hospital, and his mom Tory, won $24,200 just yesterday on Thursday’s show. They’ve split their charities; Steve is playing for the Surfrider Foundation, which works to protect beaches and oceans from pollution, while Tory is playing for Ecclesia Ministries, an outreach ministry for the homeless in Boston.
Now that we’ve been reintroduced to our players, let’s see if they can win more for their charities!
Round #1

Thomas and Constance are in position #1, so they’re kicking it off on $550, which they triple thanks to three R’s. They decide to buy four E’s right away before spinning again and getting their money back with one L on $250. Thomas buys a solitary A before spinning again. One T gets them $300, and a remark from Thomas that the letter “didn’t make it much clearer for me,” so they spin again. This time they get $1,000 by finding two M’s on $500. Thomas then buys two O’s, and everything seems to click. “Let’s go for the gusto one more time,” he says as he spins and lands on $250. He tells Pat they’d like to buy a Q, and there is one in the puzzle (Pat doesn’t say anything to him about using the wrong verbiage).

Thomas solves QUEEN MARY TYLER MOORE on behalf of him and his mother, and already they’ve raised an additional $2,700 for their charity.
Thomas & Constance - $2,700
Kathy & Barbara - $0
Steve & Tory - $0
And because it’s a charity week, there are no prizes added to the wheel, so Pat begins round two right away.

Kathy and Barbara get their first crack at the wheel this game. Their first spin nets them $3,600 by calling four T’s on $900. They spin $250 and get two H’s from it, then get two S’s from spinning $800. They land on $250 again, and Barbara asks if she can buy a vowel. Pat tells her after spinning she has to pick a consonant. She guesses N, but there are none in the puzzle.

Steve and Tory are up next, but their first spin is a BANKRUPT. They’re disappointed, but Pat reminds Steve that’s the same way his game yesterday started and he ended up winning, so maybe history will repeat itself?

Back to Thomas and Constance, where Thomas has an awkward moment where he asks to buy a vowel but has no money. “Your credit ain’t no good here!” Pat tells Thomas as he gives the wheel a spin and hits $800. After getting three R’s from it, Pat says now Thomas can buy a vowel. He ends up making a good pick as there are six I’s in the puzzle. They spin again and hit $500. Thomas almost gets buzzed out because his mom doesn’t tell him what letter to pick, so he pulls a single D out of thin air. Pat reminds him not to take too much time, or he’ll lose his turn. With a little more money in the bank, Thomas buys three E’s, but the next spin lands on LOSE A TURN.

Kathy and Barbara are smiling and they look ready to solve the puzzle for $5,700. Barbara solves IS THIS THE LITTLE GIRL I MARRIED, but while the audience cheers, Pat yells that the response is not correct. Kathy yells “No!” but there’s nothing that can be done.

Tory wants to solve, but Steve tells her, “Mom, we can’t solve. We have no dough.” Pat clarifies that they can solve without money, but they might want to get more. Steve spins, and ends up landing on the biggest dollar amount on the wheel; the $10,000 prize. Pat tells Steve to pick it up, and he almost puts it in his leather jacket before setting it on the ledge. From off-stage, a male voice yells, “They have to call a letter!” Luckily for Steve and Tory there are three L’s in the puzzle, so they get to keep the prize.

Tory then steps up and correctly solves IS THIS THE LITTLE GIRL I CARRIED. They’ve earned $10,000 so far, but Pat reminds them of the category and that they can win $2,000 more if they can say what the next line is. Steve has no idea, but Tory guesses IS THIS THE LITTLE GIRL I HELD. That’s not correct, but Pat says it wasn’t a bad guess. The next line is actually IS THIS THE LITTLE BOY AT PLAY, and it comes from the song Sunrise, Sunset from Fiddler on the Roof.
Thomas & Constance - $2,700
Kathy & Barbara - $0
Steve & Tory - $10,000
It’s time for the Jackpot round, which starts at $10,000 on Friday Finals. Tonight’s Jackpot round is brought to you by Pizza Hut, home of the new and improved pizzas.

Kathy and Barbara finally find the first letter in the puzzle after hitting $700 and calling two T’s. They then get $1,800 by finding two H’s on $900. They hit the JACKPOT, which Pat says he’ll explain after they call a letter, but Barbara calls a repeated N.

Back to Steve and Tory, who finally hit an actual dollar amount in the form of $550, and cash in with two R’s. They buy four E’s and spin again for $400. Steve asks if they can solve, but Pat tells them to call a letter first. Tory finds a solitary G. Pat reminds them that there’s a more than $12,000 Jackpot out there and several letters still available.

Steve tells Tory that he loves her and asks her to solve, even if they could get more money. Tory solves GOLDILOCKS & THE THREE BEARS, adding $1,250 to their lead.
Thomas & Constance - $2,700
Kathy & Barbara - $0
Steve & Tory - $11,250
Heading into round four, Steve and Tory have a solid lead, while Kathy and Barbara haven’t yet earned any more money for their charity. But there’s still time to catch up, especially with a $5,000 space on the wheel.

Kathy and Barbara’s return to the wheel continues its bad luck when the pair hits BANKRUPT.

Steve and Tory, on the other hand, are faring better with $250 from a single T. They also double their $300 on two N’s. Steve buys a single E before spinning again and meeting his old friend, BANKRUPT.
DING DING! DING DING!
But that sound means that Thomas and Constance won’t spin, because time is running out. Pat will give the wheel its final spin, and in the final puzzle, vowels are worth nothing while consonants are worth…$600 apiece.

Finally, without the pressures of the wheel, Kathy solves POTLUCK DINNER and adds an additional $600 for her charity.
Pat says it’s time to do some recapping for final totals. Adding in the $2,700 they won today, Thomas and Constance have raised $32,500 for their charity. Strangely, their final total does not appear on screen. Kathy and Barbara won $600, but Pat says they have a $5,000 house minimum for charity, but he still gives their final total as $45,600. Their final total also does not appear on screen. And tonight’s big winners, Steve and Tory, have won $35,450 for their charities. Their final total does appear on screen.
Thomas & Constance - $2,700
Kathy & Barbara - $600
Steve & Tory - $11,250
And with $11,250 raised tonight, Steve and Tory are once again going to the Bonus Round to play for a shot at an additional $25,000 for their charities!
But before the Bonus Round can begin, Pat has some corrections to make. While he did tell Kathy and Barbara the show has a house minimum of $5,000 for charities, it wasn’t added in to their final total. Their actual amount raised for charity is $50,000 even. And he neglected to upgrade Thomas and Constance’s total, which was only $2,700. They actually have won $34,800 for their charity.
As for Steve and Tory, their haul remains untouched, as they raised more than $5,000. But now it’s time for them to play for $25,000 more.

Steve and Tory call out BEAVER simultaneously, then try guessing WEAVER before time was out. It turns out they were just one letter off; the puzzle was BEAKER. But while they didn’t end up adding to their charity fundraising, Steve and Tory still are bringing back $35,450 for their two charities.

Additional Notes:
- Pat calls Thomas Calabro's mom "Constance," which is also what her name tag says. However, when Thomas introduces her, he calls her "Connie." As he only refers to her by that name once, I have decided to call her "Constance" in this recap.
- All four of Kathy and Barbara's spins in round two land on dollar amounts that are shaded in red.
- Something seemed off about this show. First Pat tells Steve to pick up the $10,000 space without calling a letter and had to be reminded by someone off-stage, and then there was the whole addition debacle at the end of the show with the charity totals. I don’t know if it had been a long taping week or what, but Pat was off his usual form tonight.
- After round four, as the show is going to commercial, Steve can be seen reaching onto the wheel and removing the second Bankrupt over the $300 space. No explanation is given for this.

And with this episode, that's all the episodes from Season 14 in my collection! I have two episodes from Season 13 left (both from March 1996) that I will be recapping probably before the weekend is out. The first one is an episode whose follow-up has been in circulation for awhile, and it features a really impressive speed-up round solve. (I think some of you can probably guess what episode it is based on my description, but you'll find out soon enough).
