I just made this account recently about maybe 2 weeks ago and I just wanted to bounce "my performance" off of those of you who have made the show, or have been to an audition.
I made sure to work out the night before, don't stay up too late, get a full night's rest, etc, and make sure to not get too nervous.
I get to the hotel at about 9:30 am with a blue button down shirt, khaki pants, and brand new tennis shoes (which I now realized was too casual from what I've read).
I did manage to get a front row seat, but in the far right corner from the eyes of the CCs, (right in front of their wheel which I guess is either a blessing or a curse).
My first puzzle that I had a crack on I thought the first word might have had a 'M' based on filled in letters. _O_ N T _ _ N though it wasn't in the puzzle. The Contestant Coordinators also reminded me to speak up with my letter selection. The category was PLACE and the puzzle was DOWNTOWN SHOPPING CENTER.
It also was excruciating to see other puzzles before and after that one because a lot of them were classic puzzles that were so familiar to me. It killed me inside that I couldn't shout out the answer, but let me tell you I was clapping the entire time, and as people solved, I clapped audibly louder and cheered a little, and saw and noticed others later on that had just given up on clapping altogether or showing any emotion with a better seat than I did. (Really, you gave up on clapping? At a final audition?)
I got another shot later on with a SAME LETTER category, and again they just threw me off the deep end with how hard the puzzle was... though I did pick better letters and I communicated effectively (taking cue from what the CCs said earlier) with my choices and my buying of vowels, and just when I had figured out the same letter, I spun and CC just throws it on bankrupt. The puzzle was BEAUTIFUL BABBLING BROOK and the bankrupt was wonderful timing there as I sat back down dejected, but I then clapped and cheered for everyone else. Other people called used letters more than once, and there was even two incorrect puzzle solves said THE SAME WAY. The puzzle was FREE PARKING ON (or 'IN' said TWICE by two different people) THE MONOPOLY BOARD.
The Test
The dreaded test. I knew that I just had to get half. Half was good, but more was better. I did get to half, with a few half puzzle solves, so make it like 9.5/10 out of 16.
Then there was the 4000th episode recap that they showed, with all the good (and bad) moments from past seasons. (This was where I quoted word for word from Pat, THIS IS WHEEL OF FORTUNE, JOE!)
Callbacks in Callback
Unfortunately, my name was not one of those that had made it to play the more intense version, though I did shake the hand of the person to my right that did made it to the more intense version of games.
(I did not see whether the CCs caught my interaction, as it's my nature to move and process super fast on mundane things like that though in hindsight I should had shown more graciousness/more relaxed processing of leaving.)
Now I did notice that some people in the forums did get phone calls straight after audition while others got letters. They said that around March 9th is when you should be getting something, but that's just a starting point as it could honestly take till the end of March to get a letter. I'm hoping with my improvement in my second puzzle, my test, and just non-stop clapping/cheering gets me a letter.
Wish me luck!
