According to some posts on JBoard.tv, it looks like Jeopardy! will be rerunning select episodes from early seasons (80s and 90s) after the encore presentation of the 2019 Tournament of Champions. How likely is it that Wheel will do the same, and does Mike Richards' new role as EP make it more likely that it will get the same treatment? Are there obstacles that would prevent these from being shown again in Wheel's usual first-run slot (music licensing issues, etc.)?

For reference, here are the next Jeopardy! reruns starting tomorrow according to Xfinity TV Remote:
July 6-17: Season 36 Tournament of Champions July 20: Trebek premiere (not counting pilots) July 21: Trebek's second episode (three-way zero finish resulted in no returning champion the next day) July 22: One of Chuck Forrest's shows (Xfinity doesn't list which one)
July 23: One of Frank Spangenberg's shows (Xfinity doesn't list which one)
July 24: A 10th Anniversary Tournament show (Xfinity doesn't list which one, but I think it will be the second game of the two-day final) July 27: October 26, 1992 (the first celebrity episode with Trebek as host)
July 28: February 5, 2001 (also a celebrity episode)
Talking about Wheel, I don't think they will show classic reruns. So far, the only episodes they're showing that originally aired earlier than 2018 are Great American Cities shows and those started in Season 33, so I think all other weeks they show will either be from Season 36 or 37.

Chances of classic reruns coming during the COVID-19 hiatus? Zero. It's been well-established by now that Sony does not care about Wheel of Fortune anymore, only Jeopardy!, and they are doing everything they can to make sure Jeopardy! stays above Wheel (and Family Feud) in ratings. Think about it. When was the last time Wheel had any kind of special treatment even close to all the stuff Jeopardy! has had in recent years?

Despite the very low chances, you have to admit that as long as we get those retro Thursday puzzles, there's always hope, especially now that we've got a new EP at the meld, and a good first impression could be to show classic reruns. You could theme them according to time of year, with September for instance being full of season premieres, Halloween weeks in October, Veterans/Armed Forces and Family Weeks in November, Christmas episodes in December, winter-themed weeks in January, couples weeks in February, college weeks in March, etc. Save the S37 stuff for weekend reruns when S38 would have started like usual. I just don't want the rerun cycle to turn into GSN's last lease where they air the same episodes over and over.

They would have to rerun the whole week if they wanted to show one particular episode. They're very stubborn about that; there's no such thing as "episodes" to them. The only reason we do get the retro puzzles is because those are short clips that have their audio completely removed. There's a difference between showing those versus showing a full episode. Besides all that, if Wheel did rerun vintage episodes, they would have done them on the same days as Jeopardy! It would make no sense to do it for one show and then wait several weeks to do it with the other, and the "$1K a Day" sweepstakes lasting through most of August only drives further the fact that this won't be happening for Wheel. Assuming the reruns add in a plug for the sweepstakes, it would look too out of place to add one in on a vintage episode. I've also seen speculation that Pat is the obstacle to all this - that he doesn't want episodes from past decades rerunning or streaming. |

If he and Vanna would even get free money. Vanna once said that she does not receive residuals from GSN airings of Wheel, which probably means Pat doesn't, either.

Very good points, although Jeopardy isn't reairing full weeks besides the Million Dollar Masters tournament (from a post on the Game Show Forum). However, I think if Wheel did plan to rerun vintage episodes like Jeopardy is doing they would have them on at the same time meaning we would know already. I can't see the $1K a Day sweepstakes being done while vintage episodes are on either. Jeopardy has been basically the same format since the syndicated version began, the shopping element makes Wheel episodes from that time very different from today plus the lack of toss-ups and the format of the bonus round. I've seen the Pat speculation also, that he doesn't want classic episodes shown because it would show how much he's aged. |

That sounds like a good idea, however, I personally think Harry would be too lazy to try to dig up archives to be able to do a retro week. ^ He wouldn’t be lazy about that if it was for Jeopardy!  Why do I always have to be right about these things?  |

I'm going to stress this again... [Sony is] doing everything they can to make sure Jeopardy! stays above Wheel (and Family Feud) in ratings. Think about it. When was the last time Wheel had any kind of special treatment even close to all the stuff Jeopardy! has had in recent years? Wheel has not had higher ratings than Jeopardy! since January 2019, at a point where both shows had nothing special going on, and obviously before Alex Trebek's diagnosis. Sony couldn't be bothered to add Wheel to Netflix despite Wheel and J! almost-always having equivalent licensing since they're likely a package deal. This is one of the only times a licensing agreement only applied to one show and not the other. Although Wheel is set to come to Stirr, Jeopardy! and other CBS Television Distribution syndies are set to come with it. J! is also available on some international Netflix services like the UK, bringing even more fans to the show from all over the world. James came along a few months later, and Wheel's ratings stayed stagnant. Even the media couldn't be bothered to compare or make note of the lack of effect James had on Wheel when everyone couldn't stop talking about him. Sony did nothing to cross-promote Wheel during this successful time for the other show; quite the opposite with how they basically sabotaged it by causing an all-time-low win record for the Bonus Round even during its 7000th episode, which was a tiny blip on the radar since James was still on J! Wheel's only thing that made the show actually stand out over the past 2+ years was when Pat suddenly needed emergency surgery and Vanna had to fill in, but that was totally unplanned and shouldn't really count as the last time Wheel had something "special" while J! did not. And it wasn't even as great a success in the end as we had hoped. Vanna was criticized for being too "awkward" and non-fans didn't watch more than two of her episodes. And Wheel still didn't beat J! in the ratings for any of the weeks where she hosted even though J! had nothing special happening for the December weeks. Then of course came J!GOAT which caused even more people to forget that Wheel of Fortune is still a thing. The overwhelming success brought even more fans to the syndicated series and the show as a whole. Sony has given Jeopardy! so much exposure that they've pretty much ensured it won't fade into obscurity when Alex is no longer around. There will definitely be a dropoff, but it will still have enough dedicated fans who will support the show no matter who hosts it, probably still more than Wheel even if Pat and/or Vanna are still with their show when Alex is not. Wheel has been run almost completely on autopilot for the past decade, and it needs to change. I am seriously scared that one day, all those obnoxious "They should cancel Wheel of Fortune and replace it with more Jeopardy!" wishes from casual J! fans will come true. Nobody ever talks about Wheel anymore except for when there's a funny missolve. The media couldn't even be bothered to make note of how Wheel isn't doing retro reruns despite being J!'s sister program. I've seen other game show fans justifying not rerunning retro Wheel episodes because the older years, especially the shopping era, were "boring"... but these are the exact same game show fans that call Wheel "boring" and "stagnant" now... |

I still want to see more retro Wheel episodes from the 90s and 2000s. But they have been coming and going on various video websites. Even this week I had to go to Dailymotion to see some Wheel episodes from 1995-98.

Or if someone solves the puzzle with just a single and/or no letters showing, then asking, "Did they cheat?!" Um...no. Anybody who has watched Wheel for years knows that's actually quite common.
Who's to blame for this? Is it Sony? Is it Harry? Is it a combination of factors?
It's really sad that people criticized Vanna for being awkward. She's spent nearly 40 years standing on the puzzleboard, clapping, smiling, and touching/turning letters, and that's pretty much been all that was required of her. Yeah, she filled in for Pat a couple times in the past, but that was for only a couple rounds. She had no time to prepare to host the whole show, and clearly was nervous because it's a new experience for her. I think a lot of people really treated her unfairly. Admittedly, I only saw one Vanna-hosted episode, but I really liked it and thought she did great, especially given the circumstances.
Now, full disclosure, I admit I've started watching Jeopardy! a lot more than usual, but I also recently just set my DVR to record Wheel for the first time in several years because I want to see what the show's doing now.

Speaking of rerunning episodes prior to Season 34, I remember seeing one of them, and they left in the music cues that were used at the time. In other words, they didn’t dub in the current music package like they did when they re-ran S33 episodes on Saturdays after the package debuted on 1/2/2017. Has anyone seen an episode reran at this time where the music package wasn’t dubbed in?
That being said, I agree that’s it a disappointment that older Wheel episodes aren’t being reran (especially episodes from the 80s or 90s).
