Continuing on from yesterday, here's the second episode of Ultimate Adventures Week from January 2000. Unlike yesterday's recap, this one doesn't contain any infamous rounds, but it's still an enjoyable episode.
Preview Puzzle
Category: Thing
C _ R _ A G _
Pat at least acknowledges that he never gets the Preview Puzzle right, guessing CHERCAGO (yes, that’s how he pronounced it) before it’s revealed to be CORSAGE. “I was darn close,” Pat says.
Anne Davis is from Parris Island, South Carolina. She sometimes works as a substitute teacher but spends much of her time with her five children, including 6-year-old triplets. She’s married to a United States Marine, and together her family does a lot of sports.
Peter Sacaras is from Delmar, New York. He works as a paramedic for the Albany Fire Department and is also a registered nurse for a pediatric intensive care unit. In his spare time, he plays volleyball and golf, and spent five years as a competitive bobsledder, even competing in the 1984 Olympic trials.
Diane Oran is from Lodi, California. She is an English instructor at San Joaquin Delta College. She and her family live on an acreage, and despite Pat thinking it’s a farm, she says it’s not. She’s married with two children, and admits she’s probably the least-athletic of all three contestants on today’s show.
Round one happens to be tonight’s Puzzler Round, so somebody could go home with an extra $3,000.
Round #1

Anne’s first spin is met with some bad luck as she calls a dud T and fails to cash in on $450.

Peter’s first spin goes a little better, finding two R’s for $350, then buys two E’s. Unfortunately, Peter hits LOSE A TURN and can’t go on.
_ R E _ _ / _ _ R

“I was going to have him spin!” Diane says as she begins her turn. But it’s off to a bad start as she calls a dud G and can’t get $550.
_ R E _ _ / _ _ R

Anne’s second spin fares much better, netting $800 on a single D. She has even better luck with $500 after finding five S’s.
D R E S S / _ _ R
S _ _ _ E S S
Now with money, Anne decides to solve DRESS FOR SUCCESS and gets $3,300. She celebrates, even though Pat accidentally steps on her foot. Not a bad first round total, but she can nearly double it if she solves today’s Puzzler.

Anne guesses EYEWITNESS, then thinks for a bit before remembering the solution the last puzzle, and calls out EXECUTIVE…but unfortunately it’s after the buzzer sounded, so she won’t be getting the extra $3,000.
Anne - $3,300
Peter - $0
Diane - $0
While that didn’t work out, perhaps Charlie’s Ultimate Adventures prize will be won by someone. Today’s round two prize is luggage and outerwear provided by High Sierra Sport Company. It includes a fleece pullover and a jacket. It’s worth $2,500.
Round #2

Peter’s arch-nemesis LOSE A TURN rears its ugly head on the first spin, putting a damper on the round for him.

Diane has some better luck, finding two R’s worth $500 apiece. But a dud C means she can’t pick up $600.

Fresh off her first-round victory, Anne encounters some bad luck by hitting BANKRUPT.

Peter bypasses LOSE A TURN for $300, but there’s no M so he’s lost his turn anyway.

And then Diane hits BANKRUPT and loses $1,000.

Finally, Anne breaks the loss cycle by finding three T’s on $300. She buys two A’s before doubling her $500 haul with two N’s, then buying three O’s. A solitary H nets her $550, and she does even better with three L’s worth $500. Anne buys two E’s, before having a close call with BANKRUPT and getting $600 for a single Y.
_ O H N
T R A _ O L T A / &
_ E L L Y / _ R E _ T O N
That BANKRUPT scare was enough to make Anne decide to solve JOHN TRAVOLTA & KELLY PRESTON. She has now added $3,800 to her bank, more than doubling her current lead.
Anne - $7,100
Peter - $0
Diane - $0
Let’s head to the Jackpot Round, which Charlie says tonight is brought to us by Hot Pockets Cheeseburger. There’s also a new Ultimate Adventures prize; it’s a trip to Arizona where you’ll stay at Merv Griffin’s Wickenburg Inn Dude Ranch & Tennis Club. Horseback riding and exciting outdoor activities are available, as well as a sunset barbecue on the range. It’s worth $6,158.
Round #3

_ _ _ _ _
Diane’s first spin lands on the DUDE RANCH trip Charlie just talked about, and she’s able to pick it up thanks to an R. She then gets some cash thanks to two S’s worth $300. Her luck appears to have gotten better, netting $550 on a single T. Vowels are helpful, too, as she buys a single E, but her luck runs out as she hits BANKRUPT, losing not only the DUDE RANCH trip but also her $900.
_ _ _ _ S
R _ _ _ _
S T E _ _
The BANKRUPT gets Anne, too, unfortunately.

Luckily Peter is able to break the cycle by finding two N’s worth $600, then buying a solitary A. But the BANKRUPT gets him too, making him lose his $950.

R _ _ N _
S T E A _
Diane’s looking for redemption, but can’t get $600 thanks to a dud M.
_ _ N _ S
R _ _ N _

Anne hits the big money with $3,500 and is able to cash in with a D. She almost hits the JACKPOT, but it doesn’t matter, as she can’t get $800 with a bad C.
_ _ N _ S
R _ _ N _
S T E A _
Back to Peter, who calls a K and gets $550 for it. He buys two O’s, and comes extremely close to hitting JACKPOT, but instead gets $800 with a B.
B O N _ S
R O _ N D
S T E A K
With nothing but vowels left, Peter solves BONUS ROUND STEAK, putting him on the board with $1,100. Pat tells Peter he would have landed on JACKPOT if he’d eaten one more Cocoa Krispy that morning.
Anne - $7,100
Peter - $1,100
Diane - $0
As we head into round four, Diane’s still looking to get on the board, while Anne has a large, but not insurmountable, lead, as the $5,000 space is placed on the wheel.
Round #4

_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _
Anne begins the round by calling for $5,000, but she gets two spaces away instead, landing on $600, which she picks up thanks to a T. She also doubles her $550 with two N’s. Anne then goes on a vowel hunt, finding a single I and two O’s. But her streak ends when she can’t find an L worth $900.
_ _ T _ N _ I O N
_ O _ _
Peter makes a quick $500 on a single R, but then…
DING DING! DING DING!
Time is running out, so Pat gives the wheel its final spin. Vowels will be nothing, but consonants will be worth…$1,500 apiece after Pat lands on the same $500 space that Peter just landed on.
_ _ T _ N _ I O N
_ O R _
Peter – No K
Diane – No P
Anne – 1 C (mumbles “Cord,” but doesn’t try to solve)
Peter – No M
Diane – 1 D
Anne – 1 S
_ _ T _ N S I O N
C O R D
Before Vanna even reveals the S, Anne calls out EXTENSION CORD for the win, taking $4,200, and adding to her existing lead.
Diane unfortunately was unable to cash in this game, but she’ll be taking home some lovely parting gifts.
Anne - $11,300
Peter - $1,100
Diane - $0
Thanks to three victories, Anne is our big winner with $11,300, and will be playing the Bonus Round!
But before we can start the Bonus Round, we need to find out what Anne will be playing for. Charlie and Pat discuss this week’s prizes, which include a brand-new Indian Chief motorcycle worth more than $24,000; a skiing trip and pickup truck package worth almost $22,000; a Grand Canyon history tour on the Colorado River and Ford Explorer package worth $30,000; a motorhome worth more than $57,000; and, of course, the $25,000 cash.
W – H – E – E – L
With all five Bonus Round prizes still available, Anne picks the H. Pat says Vanna will gesture to reveal the puzzle, but when she doesn’t, he’s kind of caught off-guard. Vanna gestures after the blanks are revealed, creating a bit of a funny moment.

Anne guesses HURRICANE and HURT before talking to herself and thinking of the word pin, which leads her to guess HAIRPIN, followed by HARPON before getting buzzed. When it’s revealed to be HORIZON, Anne reacts with surprise and says it was a hard puzzle. Unfortunately, Anne will not be driving the MOTORHOME back to South Carolina, but she still has a very nice total of $11,300.
Additional Notes
- There appears to be a weird edit after Peter’s first spin in round one. Someone in the audience can be heard laughing, but it sounds like it’s partially cut off. And Pat seems to awkwardly say, “Yeah, there’s and R and there’s an R,” and then, for some reason says, “It’s your turn again, Peter. What do you want to do?” Could they have had some disruptive laughter and had to pause the taping? Or was a null cycle poorly edited out?
- A null cycle is not edited out in round two.
- After Pat’s final spin, Diane’s podium initially starts flashing for a few seconds before the mistake is realized and Peter’s podium begins correctly flashing.
- My copy of this episode includes a preview of NFL Players Week, which aired the following week. The preview includes a clip of Pat in a “locker room” being interviewed about the game. Pat is shown to be missing a tooth and have a bruised face, and when asked if he has any comments, he laughs and says, “You should see the other guy.”
Tomorrow I’ll continue my recap of Ultimate Adventures Week with an episode featuring one of my all-time favorite contestants who brings a lot of excitement to the show.
