I'm assuming the change in Executive Producer helped Wheel helped get a nomination this year, and maybe the momentum from Celebrity Wheel (even though that's primetime not daytime).

Thank you, Mike! Another accomplishment for Wheel in 2021. Actually, the last time Wheel was nominated in the game show category was 2016, not 2014; they submitted the S33 tiebreaker/$100K win episode. It's also often been nominated in the lighting category even in years when not nominated in the game show category. I believe it won that award in 2014.
Anyway, does Wheel's return to the game show category pretty much confirm that it was Harry Friedman's fault that it got snubbed for most of the 2010's? Was it his decision to not even submit it for the main category most years putting all of his confidence in J!?
Now the question is, which episode did they submit? My guess is either Dave Andrade's episode since he was the only six-figure winner of Season 37, or Laura Trammell's house win episode if it's not past the cutoff. I forget what the rules are for episode submissions.
Of course, none of that really matters, since J!'s going to get it again for obvious reasons. Still, at least Wheel doesn't get humiliated with another "every game show you can think of except Wheel, including the latest cancellations" lineup. Next year, however, will probably really even the playing field, once J! has a permanent new host and Wheel hopefully sees even more small improvements in Mike's second season, plus Steve Harvey slowly fading into irrelevance.

I'm assuming the change in Executive Producer helped Wheel helped get a nomination this year, and maybe the momentum from Celebrity Wheel (even though that's primetime not daytime). Actually, according to the rules of the Emmys since last year, primetime episodes of a series that is typically produced for daytime can only help the nomination for the daytime series, and cannot be used for primetime. Celebrity Wheel should technically be included in consideration for the daytime show. (so would TPIR at Night and technically the Jeopardy! GOAT) This isn’t saying that they submitted an episode of Celebrity Wheel, but it’s technically possible.

Celebrity Wheel should technically be included in consideration for the daytime show. (so would TPIR at Night and technically the Jeopardy! GOAT) And Celebrity Family Feud, by that logic. But one could argue that CFF and CWOF might not count as "primetime episodes" of their regular shows because they're different shows entirely, moreso than TPIRAN and J!GOAT. Also, do we know what the rules are in terms of what timespan the submitted episode has to be from?

Wheel's last nomination for Outstanding Game Show WAS in fact in 2014. 2016's Nominees were TPIR, LMAD, J!, FF, and MMC. In terms of eligibility, a show would have to air at least 15 episodes between January 1 and December 31, 2020. So it's pretty likely they didn't submit the episode with the house win, but maybe Christian or Dave's episode. I think the only reason J!GOAT received a nomination is because its episodes were reran during May when the pandemic was just getting started and J! didn't have enough episodes to make it into June, so they chose to pad it out. IF CWOF were to rerun in the summer or under similar circumstances as J!GOAT, then it would be considered for a nomination. Also, isn't the category J!GOAT up for new?

I remember seeing a clip of the S33 $100K win at the 2016 ceremony. I guess that was for Pat's nomination. In terms of eligibility, a show would have to air at least 15 episodes between January 1 and December 31, 2020. So it's pretty likely they didn't submit the episode with the house win, but maybe Christian or Dave's episode. Or in that case, probably the $100K win from October.

The Jeopardy GOAT tournament was actually nominated in a separate category-- Outstanding Daytime Special Event. Also, do we know what the rules are in terms of what timespan the submitted episode has to be from? From what I've seen the episode is submitted before the end of December.

Outstanding Daytime Special Event. That really sounds like that category was made only for the purpose of giving J! another award... If that category sticks around, hopefully CWOF gets nominated next year.

Outstanding Daytime Special Event. That really sounds like that category was made only for the purpose of giving J! another award... If that category sticks around, hopefully CWOF gets nominated next year. This category was renamed. It is typically referred to as “Special Class Special” and the Macy’s Parade is always nominated along with other shows that don’t fit into categories(like the first 15 years Judge Judy aired) or are standalone Daytime Episodes(like the funeral episodes of daytime dramas that honor the real life passing of veteran actors). Those standalones are about as blatant of an Emmy Bait Grab as GOAT. Unrelated, but it’s been almost forty syndicated seasons and Vanna White more than proved her worth for NATAS recognition in her guest hosting stint(especially the last round of shows when she filled in for Pat in Early 2020). That last week of shows, her timing was way better and she turned Wheel into more of a player’s vibe; a welcomed break for those of us sick of the nightly Dean Martin roasts. She was warm and personable and it showed. At this point, whether she guest hosts again or just continues to ad-lib from her board with dialed back Susan Stafford energy, she really deserves co-billing alongside Sajak in the nomination process. Maybe being left out of contention is her personal choice.

WHEEL won none of the awards nominated. J! won best game show (again) and Alex Trebek won Best Game Show Host (I think we all saw that coming).
But hey, a step up from those last few times at least?

J! won everything and Wheel snubbed. And nobody is surprised.
Sure, they weren’t going to risk backlash for letting any other show win after Alex’s passing, but Sony still needs to keep the status quo that Jeopardy! is the better show. Wheel had enough spotlight this year. Can’t have people forgetting the other show for more than a week…
Next year, once everything at J! is settled, I worry that Mike is going to continue ensuring J! is always the more dominant and popular show like Harry did. CWOF getting a second season will be a good sign, but no matter who is hosting J!, it’s still almost-always higher-rated than Wheel, still the preferred game show by local stations (and Mike knows this), and still discussed more on social media.
Wheel also did themselves no favors by submitting an episode with a Bonus Round loss. Almost like they thought, “Fine, we’ll submit it for a nomination so fans stop saying we’re biased, but there’s no way it’s going to win anyway.”

Almost like they thought, “Fine, we’ll submit it for a nomination so fans stop saying we’re biased, but there’s no way it’s going to win anyway.” Although it's odd - our local station has had two half hour specials the past two weeks - one was about animals (the main meteorologist has a daily pet segment with animals for adoption) and the other was about travel destinations around the state.
While the travel one was shown at 7pm (in place of Wheel), the other was on at 7:30 (in place of Jeopardy), which made no sense both with what you mention (that Jeopardy is favored) and even more so that the Jeopardy episodes are still new, while Wheel is now in reruns (both took place after 6/14).

Absolutely no surprised Jeopardy won Best Game Show and Alex won for Best Host. Of course it's deserved on both counts. Let's see what happens with Jeopardy's status though going forward-- its ratings have declined since Alex's final show and whoever becomes the permanent host will inevitably turn off at least some of its fanbase. Not that Wheel will definitely surpass it again, but maybe Jeopardy won't be the automatic favorite anymore.
