So with the retirement of the Free Play wedge, there's no longer any way for a contestant to retain their turn despite calling a wrong letter or solving incorrectly and there's been no way for a contestant to remain in control after hitting Bankrupt or Lose a Turn since the Free Spin was retired.
Just wondering what the consensus is here-- should there be something that allows contestants to keep their turn, whether it's the Free Play wedge or Free Spin disc? Something else I thought of was to make it so the winners of the first two Toss Ups also get one free do-over that they can use anytime they call a wrong letter, solve incorrectly, or hit Bankrupt or Lose a Turn.
I did prefer Free Play to the single Free Spin token only because it allowed an extra turn opportunity for multiple players and not just one for the whole game. I would have always preferred Free Spin to work like it does in some international versions where a token can be earned multiple times, but a player cannot have more than one in possession at a time.
This is why we watch. Not only for the gut punch, but the random acts of insanity that make you cheer for total strangers, the brothers doing "YMCA," or the wife jumping into her husbands arms which led to the greatest ad lib between Pat & Vanna, etc, etc, etc).
There's a reason this show has been on so long.
I'll never quit watching. Hopefully, you won't either.

Good point about the Free Play, it was available for all three contestants in the first three rounds and I thought the added element of getting a free vowel was a good wrinkle. The Free Spin working the way it does in some international versions as you described would be a good way to improve it.

Easy choice for me - the strategic element of Free Spin of whether to keep your turn going now or wait for a more important moment in the game is sorely missing from Free Play.
This incident could have been a factor in Free Play's retirement. It wasn't the only time a contestant attempted this, either. Also, because of FP's multiple rules, Pat was technically wrong in saying Kelly had to "spin again"; she could have bought a vowel or tried to solve if she wanted to.

I know that we, on this site, know the rules for Free Play, but when I watch with family or friends who aren't necessarily nightly viewers, they have no idea how it works. Most assume that it's just a new Free Spin with a cool looking wedge that lights up. They don't realize that players can use the free turn to call vowels for free.
Free Spin was more straightforward. I never loved the switchover, and while I would love to see Free Spins make a comeback, I am just happy to see Free Play gone.
