This week is turning the big 25 today...
EPISODE #2621: WHEEL INTO 1997
Airdate: 1/6/97
Hosts mentioned that last week consisted of repeats.
First contestants of 1997:
Julie Parker: Mercer Island, WA. Senior at the University of Washington studying psychology (but hopes to go to graduate school) and preschool teacher.
Becky Lane: Fort Walton Beach, FL (orig. from Duluth, MN). Lieutenant colonel in the Air Force stationed at Hurlburt Field who works at the Air Force Special Operations School. Married to Steve with a daughter (Christina)
Mike Marsh: By way of Sacramento, he married 5 months ago (she's in the audience) and enjoys playing sports and writing poetry.
PERFECTION! Julie solves VICTORIA'S SECRET RECIPE.
PRIZE ADDED TO WHEEL: trip to the Tenaya Lodge At YOSEMITE ($4,268)
Becky remembers LARRY HAGMAN FINDS BARBARA EDEN IN A BOTTLE to keep the money and the trip; not quite Perfection #2, but still a nice round for her.
LOSE A TURN: Becky
JACKPOT ROUND
Now I can say PERFECTION #2 since Mike didn't make any mistakes here and solved GARNET THE JANUARY BIRTHSTONE.
LEFT BEHIND IN POT: $9,800
Mike solves AN AUSPICIOUS OCCASION for the outright lead.
DUDS: E (Julie), R (Becky)
DING DING! DING DING!
FINAL SPIN: $300
PERFECTION #3! Becky's also won this prize SERVED PIPING HOT...a dining package (Phillipe Deshoulieres dining table, Da Vinci crystal, and Oneida Silversmiths; $8,669).
FINAL SCORES
WINNINGS SO FAR: $45,737
NO BANKRUPTS!
BONUS ROUND
PRIZES
Acura 3.2 TL sedan ($35,935)
Acura SLX SUV ($38K+)
a $5,000 Amtrak train trip + $12K
a $23,000 pair of motorcycles
$25,000
LETTER PICKED: L
RSTLNE is limited:
MHCEA gives her a good shot...
Unfortunately, she blows it saying CREAM, CRANK, CRAMP and CREEK. That was a CRUMB and $25,000 can't be claimed.
BECKY'S FINAL TOTAL: $24,587 ($11,650 plus the Yosemite trip and the dining set; eligible for Friday Final)
Vanna's a notoriously early Christmas shopper. She already bought some gifts for the 1997 holiday season!
OVERALL THOUHGTS: Isn't it nice when you have winnings this generous without the help of the overload of Toss-Ups and the Prize Puzzle? It feels more Wheel of Fortune with every top dollar space being cashed in and each player dominating a round (even if Julie got the shorthand). The Bonus Round was kind of disappointing, so it only taps out at a 7/10.
