The ratings for Mayim's return are in... and they're not great. Despite clinging to a thin lead among all syndicated game shows, viewership fell 10% week-to-week. Surely Mattea's loss was a contributing factor, but others have pointed out that endings of other superchamp runs this season have not caused similar losses (Matt Amodio's loss ushered in a 3% decline while Amy Schneider's run caused just a 2% fall). Preemptions did not play a role either. The only week with lower ratings was Mike Richards' short stint as permanent host at the start of the season. edit: wording

A couple new things to report on the hosting front: - Ken will be a celebrity partner on the upcoming season of The $100,000 Pyramid and has been described in the press release as the "host of Jeopardy!". Just some more tea leaves for folks to read into.
- Buzzy Cohen has been teasing his return as host, likely for the fall celebrity series. This would be a major development, as Mayim was originally onboard to host all primetime specials.

Well, it looks like this decision may come to a resolution "very, very soon" according to EP Michael Davies. Davies hinted that the show would hire "multiple hosts to represent the entire audience, to represent the entire country, in order to take this franchise forward.” Whether this means that the status quo continues remains to be seen. If we're taking bets, I'd say Ken gets the main show, Mayim takes certain primetime spinoffs and streaming specials, while Buzzy Cohen gets the celebrity primetime episodes this fall. (I'm buying into the recent Buzzy hype only because ABC refused to announce a host for that version, calling into question Mayim's availability, though she very well could take those shows as well if Sony is hoping to delay the announcement for the future of the franchise.) www.tvinsider.com/1050061/jeopardy-permanent-host-announcement-producer-ken-jennings-mayim-bialik/

Considering that production is slated to begin next week, I wouldn't be surprised if we at least get an unofficial leak about the show's plans in the upcoming days.

They definitely HAVE to announce it this week, considering they start taping on Monday?

The Sony ticketing hotline I called the other day indicated that the show would have audiences starting Monday, 8/1, though the official website says that tickets are (were) only available starting the following day. Maybe the first taping session of the season will be done without an audience. Whatever the case, a reputable outlet such as Variety will probably have a story before that happens, just as they did with the initial Mike Richards scoop weeks in advance.

I'm personally hoping that Ken Jennings gets tapped to be the permanent host for the regular syndicated series (including the Tournament of Champions, Second Chance Tournament, and Professor's Tournament) and Mayim hosting the prime time spinoffs. And Celebrity Jeopardy! is even making a comeback, except it's going to air in prime time. That said, since Michael Davies wants to expand the show with more hosts, here's an idea I came up with:
• They revive the Jeopardy! Teen Tournament but as a prime time spinoff on ABC. Mayim hosts this event; however, they still air it during any of the ratings sweeps months (November, February, or May).
• Jep! (the short-lived kids version of Jeopardy!) also gets revived, with Bob Bergen hosting. Episodes air on Saturday mornings. Unlike the first installment, contestants don't have stuff dumped on them or get sent behind a wall after providing an incorrect response or forgetting to phrase their responses in question form.
• If ABC decides to not carry the College Championship, TPTB can recycle that event back into the regular syndicated series.

Well, the host rotation is now official for the upcoming season, per EP Michael Davies. Ken will host the syndicated episodes from September through January (including the Second Chance Tournament and Tournament of Champions), and then Mayim will pick up in January for the National College Championship and yet unnanounced events. A full host schedule will be named in the coming months. Mayim will also host the ABC primetime specials, including Celebrity Jeopardy!, as originally speculated. It is unclear whether this is simply a temporary solution until Mayim's sitcom Call Me Kat wraps production, as Mr. Davies has not revealed the term of either host's contract. Contestants for the Second Chance Tournament will be revealed on a new podcast called "Inside Jeopardy!" which will be made available on Monday, August 1.
