Really really really really awesome news! Do any insiders know if the show has undertaken an extensive digitization process of at least its syndicated library? I remember reading that Harry Friedman started doing this for Jeopardy! in the tail end of his tenure at Sony, so I wonder if they had been doing the same with Wheel. I'll keep my expectations low for now, but I'd love to see any of the pre-electronic puzzleboard era return to TV.

Although we don't know what eras this will include, I'm still very excited about this! Even if it's only 2010's-present, it's still better than waiting every six months for Netflix to change their 25 episodes. Good to know that this deal doesn't mean Wheel has to leave Netflix, though.
I'm sure the GP is more excited about Jeopardy!, but from an archivist's standpoint, Wheel is a much bigger deal here. J! loves to open its vault, and we've seen episodes from all its decades legally on TV and streaming within just the past four years. Wheel, on the other hand...
Last appearance of an 80's episode: August 18, 2007 (GSN) Last appearance of a 90's episode: January 21, 2010 (GSN) Last appearance of a 2000's episode: September 17, 2011 (WOF Weekend)
I doubt Pluto will even touch the existing daytime episodes.

^I have no doubt the Pluto episodes will only be syndicated. Even shopping era would be a surprise to see. The last 80s episode shown on GSN was during the Merv Griffin tribute after his death I believe.

Realistically, do we know the true roadblocks that prevented older episodes from reairing over the last decade or so? Unlike Jeopardy!, in which certain facts can change over the years, the show's content by and large doesn't allow it to deteriorate with time as easily (with the exception of some dated puzzles). Was it a music clearance issue? I'm less inclined to believe that considering how often the 80s episodes would air on GSN by the time the show had already switched over to Happy Wheels.

considering they'd plaster modern cues over the classic ones when they DID show 80s/90s clips, i'd say it WAS music clearance

Though I'd assume if it is music-related, I'd guess that issue didn't exist while Merv was still alive.

Fun announcment! I'll predict that they'd start around season 20 or so, but come on. Almost every episode airing would be nice.

^ Actually, it was the pilot from 1964 that recently popped up regarding J!. The 1974 syndie episode appeared about five years ago. Many fan recordings from the '80s-now have also appeared as well.
The Price Is Right: The Barker era started with Season 11 (1982-83), which means it isn't out of the realm of the possibility to start from S-001 (although more than likely, sometime in the '90s, '00s, or '10s). Let's Make A Deal is starting from 2011, two years into its run. 500 episodes of Price are currently in Pluto's rotation, which is as much content as over five full seasons of Wheel. They'll most likely start from a certain point and then just keep going from there. There probably will be the occasional skipped episode due to most likely tape damage, but on average, about 95% of all episodes from seasons 11, 12, and the first two-thirds or season 13 have aired for reference. I can't wait to see what's coming, and especially with the original broadcast quality that beats all VCR recordings so far.
For Jeopardy!, I'd REALLY love to see pre-Sushi Bar set episodes since there's numerous gaps in the J! Archive, which nearly every episode since then archived.

Seems we both missed the boat on that one, since I can't recall any pre-1984 episodes on actual television since... either the Y2Play event on 12/31/1999, where GSN dug up the 3/2/79 show, or whatever occasion it was they dug up 2/21/72 (2,000th NBC show).

I was only referring to the syndicated version but I guess you could count the official pilot upload, too.

Let's hope it's seasons 3-5, 8, 9 and 11 at least. Any of the rarest seasons are as good as any to start. Although, I do look forward to seeing more of the seasons during the Shopping Era, it would be so great to see more of Seasons 8, 9, & 11 in crystal clear quality.

A consequence of the digital age, but I wish Pluto would stream in 60 FPS so we could potentially get that smooth, interlaced framerate like watching them on actual TV. The only chance of us seeing any previous seasons on Wheel this way is if GSN airs anything. Even Buzzr now airs all of its shows deinterlaced, which may be how their digitized masters are coming out. But like I said before, anything "vintage Wheel" I will be eternally grateful for. Heck, I'll even take Seasons 26-35 since most of us archivists don't have most of those episodes accounted for.

Though I'd assume if it is music-related, I'd guess that issue didn't exist while Merv was still alive. As of 2020, the copyright holder for Changing Keys was EMI Filmtrax Copyright Holdings. Jeopardy!'s theme is held by Sony/ATV Music Publishing. This is according to the credits of a U.S. Army Field Band virtual concert where they played various game show themes. Pat explicitly said shortly after S39 premiered that they "bought back" the rights to Changing Keys, so it must be owned by Sony now.

I'm a Wheel fan who would like full credit rolls from the syndicated version without local promos.

I'm very happy with Wheel and sister show Jeopardy coming to Pluto TV on August 1. In Wheel's case, I guess the syndicated version will stream on Pluto TV. The credit roll should be intact at the end of an episode on Pluto TV's then-new Wheel channel. I predict all episodes that air on the new channel will be from the syndicated version.

At least one promo for the channel has been airing on the new Let's Make a Deal channel. Unfortunately, all that has been shown for Wheel so far are two clips from Season 34's Great American Cities: Boston week from May 2017. Jeopardy! has a clip from the mid-2000's and an audio sample of Alex definitely taken from an 80's episode. Of course, it's too early to jump to conclusions, but so far, it looks like this is the same old deal of Wheel not opening the vault any earlier than the mid-2010's while J! continues to gladly showcase its pre-HD seasons. cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/338155643187888130/999866786948325507/RPReplay_Final1658457111.mov

Another promo. Again, the only clips are from GAC: Boston week. This is looking very depressing so far. Why this double standard with "old" episodes?
