Lauren Lapkus has done many things, including "Jurassic World" and "Orange is the New Black". At the airport, someone asked if they went to high school. She's also done a lot of voiceover stuff, for shows like "Bob's Burgers" and "Adventure Time". She's playing for the Crohn's & Colitis Foundation, in part because some of her close friends and family members are affected. She also volunteered at their summer camp for five years.
Ego Nwodim has had six years on SNL, and there were nerves for her first night. She was a biology major going on the pre-med track. She's a first-generation Nigerian-American. She's playing for Seen&Heard, which is a nonprofit that gives professional and character development for foster youth through performing arts training.
Jeff Ross is touring all year - "Take a Banana for the Ride" - based on his family. He's lost count of how many roasts he's done. He always goes for it once someone asks to be roasted. He jokes that in a few years, Pat will be old enough to run for president. 20 months ago, he went to Iraq to cheer up the soldiers. He and Drew Carey have a documentary about something similar called "Patriot Act". He's playing for Meals on Wheels America. When he was living with his grandfather, they would give his grandfather a hot meal, and he's paying them back.

For primetime, the puzzle writing was actually really good. No cringey celebrity name Rhyme Times (a first for Season 4), a Phrase that actually is a Phrase and not just "blahblahblah META blahblahblah", Star & Role appearing, and more than enough modern pop culture for the key demos to relate to. The Triple Toss-Ups were both predictable and the BR's were the usual "take two words we've used before and make a new puzzle out of them", but that's par for the course with Rob Roman. Also, THAT SHIP HAS SAILED and NONSENSICAL GIBBERISH both felt like Merv-era puzzles; he was fond of negative/downer Phrases.

Pat's card was in plain sight during the first bonus spin. The three $100K's were in the I in SPIN, W in WIN, and E in AMERICA'S. The four big ones were all in a span of just 10 wedges.

The first game on this open mic night (since we had comedians behind the podium) was lackluster, but the second game was much more competitive thanks to the tight match.

I’m surprised Lauren guesses the Spice Girls puzzle so early, but her solves were pretty impressive. Good thing she only needed an important vowel to win the first Bonus Round, but the P’s might have given her a better shot at the second one.

Ego’s look and her modeling of the $1M wedge remind me of Donna Summer. And of course, Jeff brought the roasts (and compliments).

Unsurprisingly, I no-lettered the second Triple Toss-Up of the second game. But I would’ve expected the last Triple Toss-Up of the first game to be BLURRY.

My ratings: 6 and 7
