Daytime Wheel of Fortune - Original Airdate 5/7/1980
Look at this studio, filled with fabulous prizes - an 18-karat gold lizard pin, a travel trailer, even a trip to Bermuda - over $34,000 in merchandise waiting to be won today on Wheel of Fortune!
Let's meet our three players, all newbies since we just retired a champion last show:
Paul Bonnell, former DJ, father of one, and soon to be Air Force member
Diane Redding, engaged mother of two and a gas pump jockey
Cathy Morris, a biochemist and pig collector (that's right, pig collector) born in Paris, France
ROUND 1:
$750 is the top dollar on the wheel in our first round. Players must watch out for that old black BANKRUPT or they'll lose their cash, but not their merchandise, because all sales are final on Wheel of Fortune.

THING
We've got a Megathing to start today's action, and our DJ, Paul, will spin the hit number $100 but there are no T's. Diane tries her luck and hits the FREE SPIN - tries to call an S, but she'll have to spin again first! She does find one for $100 but then calls a bad N on $450, so we go to Cathy (Chuck does not ask for the Free Spin). Cathy gets $250, just enough to buy the dud E, so we're right back where we started with Paul. He's 0 for two since there are no L's and so Diane gets her turn back. She puts up a D and buys a pair of A's, but then there are no M's and she holds the Free Spin for later to let Cathy take another turn. Cathy just barely clears the Lose a Turn over to $450 and gets a C - she must know it, since she works us down to vowels:
A P H R _ D _ S _ A C
THING
and she does - it's APHRODISIAC for $1,050!
Duds: T (Paul), N (Diane - Free Spin not asked for), E (Cathy), L (Paul), M (Diane - Free Spin not used)
Cathy will be our first shopper of the day, going to the Utility Center. She purchases the Gibson washer and dryer for $770, the utility room accessories for $83, men's clothing for $108, and a car vacuum for $22, putting $67 on a gift certificate.
Paul: two spins, two duds
Diane: a Free Spin but no money
Cathy: $1,050
ROUND 2:
We upgraded the wheel and put out a $1,000 top dollar space for this round. We've also added a second Bankrupt to spice up the game.

PHRASE
Diane holds the Free Spin and the right to start the second round. She'll begin with a pair of $450 T's - although the lighting crew seems to be having trouble finding them, and it's driving poor Susan crazy! After some buying (the E and the A) she hits $450 again for a pair of N's this time, and again for a D before buying the trio of O's. Her next spin is too hard though - it crosses into LOSE A TURN. But before she has a chance to hand in the Free Spin, it's break time - turn your backs!
_ T O _ / _ O O _
A N D / _ _ _ T E N
PHRASE
We're back, and Diane will hand in that Free Spin and spin again, but her power is too consistent - it drops right back into Lose a Turn again. Cathy will take over and hit an even worse fate - BANKRUPT, but it's essentially a Lose a Turn at the moment anyway. Over to Paul, who also finds the Bankrupt right away. Diane gets another chance with her $1,500 - a pair of L's then a pair of S's each on $400 clinch this one for her...
S T O _ / L O O _
A N D / L _ S T E N
PHRASE
and she'll STOP LOOK AND LISTEN to make sure she's right - she is, to the tune of $3,100!
Lose a Turn: Diane x2 (Free Spin used on the first)
Bankrupt: Cathy (loss of turn), Paul (loss of turn)
Diane will now shop in the Fashion Showcase, where there's a trailer and a Yukon trip - but what will she buy? She wants the Yukon Northern Lights trip for $2,598, a theatre party for $270, and some dresses for $186 before leaving $46 for the old gift certificate.
Paul: gooseegg alert
Diane: $3,100
Cathy: $1,050
ROUND 3:
$2,000 is the top dollar this round, but $1,500's not bad either.

THING
Cathy would sure like to catch up if she wants to be the day's champion, but there are no T's starting out. Paul would just like to get on the board, and he gets a $200 S. Then he claims a pair of $700 L's and puts up the M and FOUR E's, but there is no G. Diane gets a $250 C, but then it's break time - turn your backs again please!
M _ _ _ _ _ E L L _
C _ E E S E
THING
We're back, and coming out of commercial Diane will get the R and H on the board (the latter spin just skirting by $2,000 over to $500 instead). But then - oh no - she repeats her earlier call of C which is right up on the board. Cathy gets another chance, and she'll get the pair of Z's at $250 each, the last of the consonants:
M _ Z Z _ R E L L _
C H E E S E
THING
and solve MOZZARELLA CHEESE for $500!
Duds: T (Cathy), G (Paul)
DQ: Diane's repeated C
Cathy will shop in the Kids' Room and buy an electric typewriter for $320, a ceramic vase and box for $90, and a clown print for $69, leaving $21 for a gift certificate.
Paul: GOOSEEGG'D
Diane: $3,100
Cathy: $1,550
No time for more puzzles - it's all over and Diane's our new champ with a one-day total of $3,100 in lovely prizes. Wheel is NOT being canceled, so she'll be back next time to play again!
