Daytime Wheel of Fortune (Debut of Rolf Benirschke) - Original Airdate 1/10/1989
Look at this studio, filled with glamorous prizes just waiting to be won today on Wheel of Fortune! A $16,000 vacation showcase... a beautiful panda necklace... even a $14,700 sedan - over $77,000 in merchandise up for grabs, but $0 worth of Pat - instead we get Vanna in his place, introducing our new host and old Chargers kicker, Rolf Benirschke! They chat for a couple minutes, but now it's time to see him (and the Wheel) in action!
First, though, we should meet our three lady contestants:
Karen Nelson, a soon-to-be April bride from Anaheim
Cheryl Gilmore, a professional clown from Bakersfield by way of Rhode Island
Consuelo Palmer, our returning champion with $3,500 in prizes
ROUND 1:
$750 is the top dollar value for this round. Our players will try not to hit Bankrupt, because they lose their cash, but not their merchandise, because once they buy a prize, all bets are off.

PHRASE
Karen drew the number 1, so Round 1 is hers to kick off, and she will spin a respectable $400 for a trio of S's! Her third spin flirts with Lose a Turn, but it's fast enough to make $450 - she's made two purchases (the A and the I) and still has $1,350 at this point. She adds a $150 D and decides to solve:
D _ _ S N ' T

T _ I _ _
PHRASE
and you know she DOESN'T MISS A TRICK on her way to $1,500!
PERFECT ROUND!
Karen has earned the right to be our first shopper, and she's going to the Cook's Corner. Her purchases are some $900 Regalware cookware, a $399 Hotpoint dishwasher, and a $140 deep fryer. $61 goes on a gift certificate.
Karen: $1,500
Cheryl: the next turn is hers
Consuelo: waits patiently to defend her title
ROUND 2:
A $1,000 and a second Bankrupt have been added to the wheel to spice up the game.

EVENT
Cheryl finally gets her first turn of the match, and she hits the eccentric $550 for a pair of N's. Although the position of one of them suggests a G, there are none, so Consuelo will touch the wheel for the first time today. She gets a great spin of $900 but a less great lack of T's. Back to Karen who's playing with the lead, and she finds a D to give that $400 to the BANKRUPT on her next spin. No S's for Cheryl, so it's on to Consuelo, who puts up an L and two R's, but no P's - back to Karen! She puts up a C, buys an E, then her next spin is $1,000 for a single H! She lights the pair of W's and is ready to solve...

and nails WHIRLWIND ROMANCE for another $1,650!
Duds: G (Cheryl), T (Conseulo), S (Cheryl), P (Consuelo)
Bankrupt: Karen ($400)
Karen goes shopping again, in the Vacation Home this time. She'll buy the four-day Las Vegas trip for $1,086, a Magnavox portable CD player for $250, and a Forster croquet set for $230, leaving $84 to be added to her gift certificate.
Karen: $3,150
Cheryl: three spins, two duds
Consuelo: four spins, two duds
ROUND 3:
$2,000 and $1,500 are out to play this round.

PHRASE
Consuelo will have to work hard to keep her title, and she begins with a $250 T, but there are no R's, so her turn is derailed. Karen will go back to work, looking for even more money, which she almost gets - her second spin JUST slides off $1,500 over to $350... shame too, she finds a trio of N's, which means $1,050 instead of $4,500. Her next spin gets close too - but it's $300 instead of $2,000, so a pair of C's are worth $600 rather than $4,000. She'll buy FOUR O's and attempt to solve:
_ O _ N _ / O N C E
_ O _ N _ / T _ _ C E
S O _ _
PHRASE
and it's GOING ONCE, GOING TWICE, SOLD to Karen for yet another $1,450!
Sole Dud: R (Consuelo)
Karen is on fire - let's cool her off with a trip to the Office. She'll find herself buying a secretary desk for $900 and a pair of rockers for $499, putting $51 on another gift certificate.
Karen: $4,600
Cheryl: gooseegg alert
Consuelo: gooseegg alert
