Nighttime Wheel of Fortune - Original Airdate 3/17/1995 (Season 12)
Three players are hoping they have the luck of the Irish on their side, because it's St. Patrick's Day and they're playing WHEEL! OF! FORTUNE!
Let's meet our players for this evening's game, including a champion hoping to retire undefeated:
Steve Berman, an aerospace computer analyst from Mountain Valley, CA
Erica Rush, a newlywed and French instructor at the University of Minnesota at Morris
Joe Barrino, Jr., our returning champion with a two-day total of $56,845 (including a Porsche!)
ROUND 1:
$1,000 is the top dollar value for our first round, and the Free Spin is living on the red $400 tonight.
_ _ _ / _ _
_ _ _ _
PHRASE
Steve drew the number 1, and spin number 1 is a $250 S for him, but he calls the bad T on his next go-round. Erica takes her first attempt unsuccessfully - it's BANKRUPT. Joe, our champ, takes over now but can't find an R to pick up the Surprise, so it stays on the wheel as Steve knocks himself out with the N and Erica duds the D. Joe takes his second turn and with a single L nabs the FREE SPIN! It's going to have the rest of the night off, since Joe hands it in after missing with the M, but it doesn't help as there is no P either. We're grasping at straws by this point as Steve calls the W on the Surprise to no avail. Erica finds a $700 F to snap the slump and buys the pair of I's, but we're back to Joe since the H is not a hit. Joe hits $900, breaks through with the B and solves:
B I _ / _ S
L I F _
PHRASE
He's BIG AS LIFE but small on cash... just the $900 for him - notably, the only multiple in the puzzle was the I.
Duds: T (Steve), R (Joe), N (Steve), D (Erica), M (Joe - Free Spin used), P (Joe), W (Steve), H (Erica)
Bankrupt: Erica (loss of turn)
Steve: 1 for 4 on letter calls this round
Erica: 2 for 4 with a Bankrupt
Joe: $900
ROUND 2:
The $2,500 space is added to the wheel, plus our first prize of the night:
a porcelain replica of King Tut's mask worth $1,950!

BEFORE & AFTER
Erica will kick off this round hoping that it's better than the last, and for her it begins with a $500 T. She adds two more letters, getting up to $1,500 before calling the dud N. With a pair of L's Joe will put the ART wedge on his podium, but he misses on the M so we cycle around to Steve. He makes a nice little run, filling in all but the first word and then getting up the last consonants (a pair of F's)...

BEFORE & AFTER
and he solves COFFEE SHOP TILL YOU DROP for $2,200 and the lead!
Duds: N (Erica), M (Joe)
Steve: $2,200
Erica: still looking for her first dollars
Joe: $900
ROUND 3 - $10,000 ROUND:
The golden Oreo shines near the yellow $1,000 wedge, meanwhile $3,500 is available too!

_ _ _ / _ _ _ _ _
TITLE
Joe will have to catch up if he wants to retire undefeated... that being said, he starts hot with FOUR T's on $900! He follows that with the logical H's (four on $300) and E's (a trio). After buying the pair of I's and selling the pair of N's for $900 each, Joe goes for closure:
I N / T H E
H E _ T / _ _
T H E / N I _ H T
TITLE
Under the heat of the studio light, he solves IN THE HEAT OF THE NIGHT for $6,100... wait, haven't I said this before? Yes, I have: this puzzle was used on a Bob Goen daytime episode - July 20, 1989 to be precise - where it was solved for $750... but I think we'll all agree, $6,100 is a much better haul.
PERFECT ROUND!
Steve: $2,200
Erica: things are beginning to look grim
Joe: $7,000
ROUND 4:
Time for $5,000 and $1,500 to come out and play, plus the Oreo wedge is still active and we've added a piano!
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
FICTIONAL CHARACTER
Steve will start the fourth round with an $800 R, but it's going to take more than that to pass Joe. He strikes out with the S so Erica has another chance - maybe her last - and finds an N for $250 but no T. Back to our leader, Joe, who finds the L at the front of this puzzle for $550 but can't get an M on the yellow $1,500. Steve purchases the pair of E's and lands on $1,500 himself, picking the P as he solves:
L E P R E _ _ _ _ N
FICTIONAL CHARACTER
and appropriately for St. Patrick's Day, the solution is LEPRECHAUN, giving Steve $2,050 in gold (or at least green)!
Duds: S (Steve), T (Erica), M (Joe)
Steve: $4,250
Erica: gooseegg alert
Joe: $7,000
ROUND 5 (Partial Speedup):
Still time for spinning - let's go right to it!
_ _ _ _ _
_ _
SLANG
Erica senses that it's nearly her last chance to score, but she can't do it with an S. Joe finds a T but a lack of L's costs him his turn. Steve can't get an R, which lets Erica hit the Oreo wedge! She's incapable of getting it off the wheel though since there's no N... let's just let Pat spin now - here's the speedup board:
_ _ _ _ _
_ T
SLANG
The wheel flies right by the silver of $5,000 on its way to the adjacent $300, so that will be the price for all remaining consonants. Joe begins the quick-fire letter calling, but it's Steve who comes through with two C's and right behind him is Erica, who gets up the H and right on the buzzer...
C H _ C _

SLANG
she discards her prior guess of CHECK IT for the correct one of CHUCK IT for $300!
Duds (pre-speedup): S (Erica), L (Joe), R (Steve), N (Erica)
Duds (post-speedup): M (Joe), P (Steve), G (Erica), V (Joe)
Steve: $4,250
Erica: $300
Joe: $7,000
He's going to retire undefeated, but will Joe add another bonus prize? Let's find out!
BONUS ROUND:
A European ski vacation, diamond ring, and the $25,000 in cash are still left. From WEE, Joe picks the second E.

Let's give him RSTLN and E:

THING
Total silence and a total lack of guesses from Joe reign for the next 10 seconds... he couldn't solve BUBBLE BATH with what was showing. He won't add the $25,000 cash prize to his total, but over three days Joe has accumulated $63,845 in cash and prizes!
