Daytime Wheel of Fortune - Original Airdate 12/31/1979
Look at this extravagant merchandise! A jade incense burner... a man's suede jacket... even a Caribbean cruise! Over $43,000 in prizes waiting to be won today on Wheel of Fortune!
Let's meet our players, including a returning champion:
Lou De Larios, a retired salesman originally from Mexico City, father of three and grandfather of six
Allan Thicke, a Marine corporal and our two-day champion with $9,425 in prizes
Jackie Kendall, a telephone operator and mother of one from Toledo
ROUND 1:
$750 is the top dollar value for our first round. Our players will try not to hit that black space "BANKRUPT" or else they lose their cash (but not their merchandise, because once they buy a prize, it's theirs to keep).

PEOPLE
Lou is in the first position, and so he will begin the first round of play by spinning the wheel around to $200 for FOUR T's! His next pick is the logical H, and he gets two of them... too bad the wheel falls one peg short, so he gets $175 for each instead of the big $750. Four E's and three $200 S's later, Lou is at $1,500 and he's going to "chicken out" as he calls it...

and courtesy of THE PITTSBURGH STEELERS, that $1,500 is his!
PERFECT ROUND!
Lou will go shopping in the Escape to the Sun Showcase and purchase an $1,170 trip to Honolulu, a $250 answering machine, and the $70 croquet set, putting the last $10 on a gift certificate.
Lou: $1,500
Allan: starts the next round
Jackie: could be waiting a while for a turn
ROUND 2:
$1,000 is now the top dollar, plus there's a second Bankrupt to make it more interesting.

PHRASE
Allan gets to start after the perfect round by Lou in the first frame, and his opening spin lands just one peg out of Bankrupt and makes it to $400 for a T. His next spin is in no danger - it's a $1,000 H! Allan next picks up a $400 N before buying a big collection of FIVE E's! After a couple Y's, a P, and a K, he's up to $2,600 but we have to take a break, so here's the board as we ask the players to turn their backs...

PHRASE
Coming out of the break, Allan picks right up with a $200 R. He then finishes the consonants with the B and two L's, and the crew must think he knows it because they're already playing the solve cue instead of the only-vowels cue...

PHRASE
Of course he does know to KEEP YOUR EYE ON THE BALL! That's another misfortune-free round and $3,750 for Allan!
PERFECT ROUND!
Allan will take all that money into the Fashion Boutique, buying the big Italy trip for $3,424 and a $320 pocket radio, leaving $6 for a gift certificate.
Lou: $1,500
Allan: $3,750
Jackie: finally gets a turn next round
ROUND 3:
$2,000 and $1,500 are the big bucks from now till the end of the show!

PERSON
Jackie gets her chance to get into the game at last... and she almost loses it to Bankrupt, but the wheel clears to $600 for a T. She gets a $350 S next spin, which hurts a little since she was one peg short of the red $2,000. Her third spin is two pegs long of it and her turn is knocked out by our first dud, the N. Lou picks up a quick $1,650 for a trio of R's, buys the single E, but then loses the other $1,400 to our first heartbreaking BANKRUPT. Allan has control now and gets $700 for the Y in order to buy the only other good vowel, the pair of A's. He flirts with Bankrupt and Lose a Turn both but gets everything but one letter up...

and Allan claims another $1,950 for naming TERRY BRADSHAW of the aforementioned Steelers!
Sole Dud: N (Jackie)
Bankrupt: Lou ($1,400)
Allan's second shopping trip takes him into the Party Showcase, where he uses his money on a $416 Las Vegas weekend, a man's tuxedo for $220, and the $1,237 Puerto Vallarta trip. That leaves $77 for a second gift certificate for him.
Lou: $1,500
Allan: $5,700
Jackie: gooseegg alert
ROUND 4 (Partial Speedup):
Still time for spinning a bit, so let's get right into it!

THING
Lou will start since this is the fourth round, and he gets his flipper to the $250 space for a couple T's but can't hit with H right after. Allan gets the pair of N's for $400 each, losing that $800 to BANKRUPT right after. Jackie is desperate to get on the board, and she puts up the $500 S but duds the D. As we come back to Lou, the bells sound, so let's see the board going into speed-up mode...

THING
Chuck licks his finger, points, hauls off, and spins... $300 right between the two big numbers. Lou thought he was onto INSTANT COFFEE but fails to light up any F's. Allan has an idea, and there is an R:
_ N S T _ N T
R _ _ _ _ _
THING
We won't need INSTANT REPLAY, because Allan's solve clearly beats the buzzer by a mile and earns him that $300!
Duds (pre-speedup): H (Lou), D (Jackie)
Dud (post-speedup): F (Lou)
Bankrupt: Allan ($800)
Allan's final shopping spree takes $300 into the Fashion Boutique once more, where he picks up the men's jackets and sweaters for exactly that amount.
Lou: $1,500
Allan: $6,000 (retires undefeated with $15,425)
Jackie: GOOSEEGG'D
No bonus round in this era, so we'll just cheer for Allan, our big winner who retires with $6,000 for the day and a three-day total over $15,000!
