The Pochomises start this round on a bad note because of the BANKRUPT near $3,500. Secondly, the Waxes start their letter-calling spree w/ a $450 S and four E's courtesy of FP. After some work, they say L for loss of turn. Third, the Perezes pick up the PA trip w/ an N but then hit LAT for the second time tonight. Two spins later, the Pochomises spot the SL of four P's (good for only $1,800) and buy the I's before we see...

PRIZE PUZZLE Round - EVENT[/u]
Trying to get off the gooseegg bench, the Waxes put up a few letters before giving up $1,050 to the MDW's left-side BANKRUPT. Second for the Perezes are two singles and a pair of R's for the green 1/2 KIA. Later...
A / R E _ R E S H I N _ _ I _ / I N / T H E O _ E A N
...they win another $3,200 and will take A REFRESHING DIP IN THE OCEAN on their hotwire.com trip to the Almond Smugglers Cove in ST. LUCIA worth $6,900 for a total of $10,100 that round.
TRIP SPIN ID: SC7914434 (Sissie C.)
BANKRUPT: Waxes
Pre-Tossup #3 Scores Perezes: $12,100 cash and St. Lucia Pochomises: $6,500 Waxes: gooseegg alert

$3,000 Tossup - PERSON[/u]
F _ _ _ _ _ - _ _ - _ _ W
The Pochomises quickly solve FATHER-IN-LAW for a new total of $9,500.
Round 4 - PHRASE
The Pochomises start w/ S for sorry. Secondly, the Waxes find a pair of N's, but then makes a bad purchase of O. Third, the Perezes say a single T and four A's before we hear the bell for speed-up mode...
A / _ A T _ _ / _ A _ _ _ N / _ _ A _ _ N
...and the remaining consonants are worth $1,500 each (Pat's first spin was the BANKRUPT near $5K).
A / M A T _ H / M A _ _ _ N / H _ A _ _ N
Now this is A MATCH MADE IN HEAVEN -- the Pochomises have pulled off the upset victory by $400 w/ another $3K!
DUDS (both before Final Spin): S (Pochomises), O (Waxes)
FINAL SCORES Perezes: $12,100 cash and St. Lucia Pochomises: $12,500 Waxes: $2K gooseegg
TOTAL MAINGAME WINNINGS: $26,600
========
$100,000 Bonus Round The Pochomises didn't bring anybody w/ them, but they give Pat the E envelope of AMERICA'S.
Category: THING To get them started...
_ _ L _ _ E _ _ _ S E
I'm afraid that the BGHO combination strikes out completely. They don't have any VALID EXCUSE about their $40K loss (they thought it was SOLAR and LUNAR ECLIPSE), so they're sent packing w/ just $12,500.

First... dear lord that placeholder image is disturbing. TU1&2: Nate is certainly aware of not only the category, but the theme week as well, getting #1 right away! R1: Obvious AND is obvious. I got the bottom name pretty quickly and the top one around the time of the S's.Two pairs and some singles left behind - we can do better than $2,900. R2: The automatic impulse to call vowels on Free Play has gone on far too long, but I'm sure it will continue for years to come. The Same Letter goes on $450... we could do better than that, but it's better than $300. One pair and a single left, so $2,600 was about as good as we were going to get here. R3: Normal Trip Puzzle fare here, with a decent payoff of $3,200 plus St. Lucia. TU3: That was about as fast as you can get that one - I was thinking MOTHER-IN-LAW with no letters. R4: Got this with just the N's. Final spin looked kind of sketchy, but I don't think it was edited. Nate and his partner pick up another three grand and make it over the top! Meanwhile, we also had to give away Pity Thousands to the blue team, which doesn't sound as good pluralized. Bonus: This was set up for CDMA... of course they don't use it. I whiffed as well. Overall: Decent but unspectacular - 6/10 one more time.

way to ninja me on making a placeholder CU
Impressive jump-in on TU1. I would've needed a lot more letters.
For once, someone steals our BGHO strategy and it backfires. Interesting. I actually had that right away.

The Pochomises were pretty good players up until the BR & made the comeback late in the maingame. It was unfortunate Nate picked a bad day to go w/ BGHO, when he should've taken the safer route of CDMA; I knew the bonus puzzle w/ RSTLNE.

TU1: I keep thinking of that movie being spelled as two words because of the poster, but that is the correct spelling. There's a complaint on the show's FB thinking they knew it ahead of time. Guess they don't know the theme rule. R4: What a comeback! And what made this even more awesome was that they knew to keep ALL the letters in mind. If they had done what many other contestants do in this situation and just called the C since it was the first unrevealed consonant, they would have lost. Finally, someone who knows the game well! ;D BR: Poor Andy. Great to see that they knew that combination though. Again they dubbed in a laugh track (possibly the same one) after Pat's joke about the wedding chimes. This week had just too many themed stuff. I don't mind the Newlywed theme itself, but they're shoving lovey-dovey puzzles down our throat because apparently, Sweethearts/Sandals Romance Week wasn't enough. Unfortunately, it looks like the ampersand will be getting a lot less use now. First Same Name, then all subsets of Family, now Husband & Wife have resorted to spelling out AND. WHY? Because they need to have as little opportunities for $5K hits as possible so that people can go ahead and pick three obvious letters they know are there based on the category rather than replace them with a symbol, which was the whole reason they debuted the ampersand in the first place?! At least we'll probably still see it in Same Letter puzzles when necessary, and probably scenarios where AND wouldn't make the puzzle fit. Does the winning team lurk here? We await your arrival, Nate and/or Kristen. If we played any part in your strategies, we were glad to help. Nothing very noteworthy for tonight to end the week, but still not too bad of a show. Seeing the yellow team play was quite the treat...and then there were five.

Recap posted. And this was an average show to end the week...
Tossups: Impressive solves on the first and third ones! I thought the last word was MOTHER-IN-LAW.
R1: More cosonativity, eh? $2,900 isn't that big of a deal.
R2: Not that great of an idea to say the SL on a low dollar amount. And why not go for the C's, Nate and Kristen?
R4: That was a great comeback win by the yellow team.
Bonus Round: I knew CDMA would be the winning combo instead of BGHO. And I had that w/ the RSTLNE.
EPISODE RATING: 6 out of 10
This week wasn't as bad as I thought it would be.

This was an Okay show, with nothing spectacular to help it:
Tus: These went pretty qickly, even if the 1st and 3rd tossup were themed. Great Job by yellow.
R1: Got it with the Os, Poor red team, the Yellow team continues the winning.
R2: Got it with the Ps. It was sad for the red and blue team, but at least it wasn't a minimum win for yellow.
R3: At least someone else won. Got it at the end and it was good to see the red team win a lot after a not so great start. Didn't get the puzzle.
R4: I wished that the final spin was $300, just so we could have a tie today. Great playing by yellow, got it at the M. I was hoping they said H and they did. Best round of the show.
BR: ABCD would work here. Guess our advice didn't work today. At least it wasn't a lot.
Okay. Kinda forgettable though.
Score: 6/10

Way to capitalize on the theme for TU1.
But sheesh, go figure BGHO would completely strike out in the BR today.

No shutouts all week until Friday. To add to that, Friday had a shut-out when it came to additional letters. Even so, I did get the bonus puzzle last night. Same story for Thursday evening.

Hi everyone,
This is Nate from the June 8 episode. Thanks to MarioGS for the invite to post on this board. Unfortunately, we didn't discover this forum until after our show aired, but there's plenty of good strategy discussions on here and elsewhere on the internet.
My wife and I had a blast. Pat and Vanna were great and the members of the contestant team were awesome as well. I'd be happy to answer any questions about the show or our audition process at a later time.
I'll be the first to admit that our game wasn't spectacular (aside from maybe the first toss-up). The wheel was not really friendly to anyone. Additionally, with couples playing, if you lose control of the wheel, you're probably not getting it back. That figured greatly into our decision making process.
We had a plan going into the bonus round. It just blew up in our faces. My wife also locked in on "ECLIPSE" as the second word, and once something like that gets into you're head, it's tough to move on (especially in 10 seconds). For all the BGHO advocates on here, from a statistical standpoint, you're on the right track. A friend of mine did some statistical analysis for me, and his results are along the same lines. If he gives me permission, I'll post his analysis on here.
That's all for now. Assuming you don't grill me too badly, I'll be back.
Thanks for watching, -Nate

Welcome, Nate (and Kristen)! ;D May I ask how you found this forum? I'd love to see your friend's stats. You should let him know about this forum if you haven't already. I bet he feels awful that you struck out in the Bonus Round. I don't have anything to "grill" you for. You and your wife played great. I love how you used the theme rule to your advantage. Now, if you had picked any letter besides the H in the Speed-Up, especially the C, THEN you would have heard it from me (half-kidding, of course. It's against our site policy not to berate contestants whether they're members here or not). Feel free to post more about your experience in our "Spinning Stories" section. I do have one question, though. How did everyone react to Pat spinning the Bankrupt on the Final Spin? What did Pat have to say about it? You're our second contestant member who got to see one of those.

Hi again,
First, a note about our bonus round analysis: My friend created a program that data-mined the Archive and simply extracted the number of occurrences of each letter, and put them in order. I'm not sure how far back he went. He really didn't have too much time to go any further in depth. He was planning to analyze the different combinations to call based on whether RSTLNE were in the puzzle, but we didn't get that far.
He did three different situations:
All puzzles, puzzles with at least one E, and puzzles without an E in the puzzle.
Here were the results:
In all puzzles the frequency of letters from greatest to least is:
O, E, I, A, T, R, U, N, H, G, S, L, D, C, F, P, B, Y, W, M, K, V, J, Q, X, Z
In puzzles with no E:
O, I, A, N, T, U, G, H, S, R, L, P, Y, B, F, D, C, W, K, M, V, J, Z, Q, X
In puzzles with at least one E:
E, O, A, I, T, R, U, H, G, N, L, D, C, S, F, P, B, Y, M, V, W, K, Q, X, J, Z
Based on that analysis, we should've called H, G, D, and O. Yeah, it would have given us one more letter, but I'm not sure it would have helped. Ironically, the wi-fi at the hotel was spotty, so we didn't even receive his analysis until after we got back from the taping.
A couple of interesting things happened during out show.
1. We had about a 10 minute stop-tape when the video wall behind the contestants froze up. We all had to turn around and face the video wall and sweat while they worked on it.
2. I may have inappropriately groped my wife while celebrating a puzzle win. I asked the stage manager if they would edit it out, and they most definitely did not. I would have thought that it would have ended up on youtube.
3. Pat spun a bankrupt on the final spin. I was completely oblivious, as I was too busy thinking about the puzzle. Kristen mentioned it to me later, and I didn't even remember it.
4. During the prize puzzle, the red team was exactly two pegs away from the Lose a Turn space, and we knew the puzzle. I don't know if you could see it, but we were definitely encouraging the wheel to keep going.
-Nate

It looks like you included some past seasons, which is all well and good, but my data that just has this season:
Not including this week (so for 185 shows), B has been in 13 more BRs than D (69/56). B is only topped by G & H, then of course O has a bit more (128, 119 for A, 116 for I). BGHO was still fine... you just really got "reversed" - CDMA very rarely trumps BGHO like that. It's too bad also you didn't lock onto the puzzle right away without any help and ran into length / RSTLNE problems in ECLIPSE.
Would your friend happen to have had an account on the old Sony boards by the name "cheezyguy"?

1. We had about a 10 minute stop-tape when the video wall behind the contestants froze up. We all had to turn around and face the video wall and sweat while they worked on it. Wow. That probably wouldn't have happened if they hadn't insisted on showing multiple videos of random outdoorsy stuff instead of just the logo. Guess you know what this means, Wheel staff. Time to dust off the old "W burst" backdrops. Actually, it IS on YouTube. It just seems like a coincidental position for your hand to have been in to me. I didn't notice it originally. One more question, Nate. Do you remember whether the "America's Game" show was taped first or last for your taping day?

I don't know "cheezyguy". My friend is much more popular in the Jeopardy circles.
Mario, are you talking about the show that aired tonight? Our tape date was back on Friday, March 9. I thought our show was the last of the season to be taped in LA. The Portland shows were actually taped after ours. I don't think they returned to LA for more tapings after Portland.

Well, "cheezyguy" IS a member of jboard.tv, the Jeopardy! equivalent of us.
I'm talking about the show that is labeled as "America's Game" instead of Newlyweds. It should air sometime this week. Usually, they're show #6 for the day, but some this season have been #1. When your group drew the "show ball", what number did you get, 5 or 6?
