TenPoundHammer here, leading off a week to compensate for the fact that I hate doing recaps on two-player team weeks.  It's American Landmarks Week. Jackpot Round: Thing[/u] Cassie's first spin hits a Bankrupt on the edge of the MDW. Unique gets two T's at $600 each. After buying an E, she calls S to get the trip. She lands on the Jackpot and calls H, but chooses to spin again. Brendon calls M and the Final Spin bells sound. Final Spin is $1,500. After Speed Up, it's a dud P, a dud D, a right C from Unique, then a K from Brendon. C H _ C K M _ T _ ! Brendon solves CHECKMATE!, adding $2,000 to his score. R1: Even though Landmark was already used (and will probably be the first Toss Up every day this week), this shouldn't have been "Thing". I really think it's time to revive "Nickname"... R5: Wow, a one-word maingame answer!  But, like in the early days when these were common, it probably means a lot of duds which we won't get to see. No way contestants would go from T to H to C with no "THE". Even if it does add time to the Speed Up clock, stop cheating us out of clues!  It would be really helpful to us playing along if we knew that there was no S, R, or whatever was called...So, they almost refuse to use single words anymore, but when they do, they're going to seem like it was a breeze for contestants. I'm missing the old "Wheel" more and more.  Imagine if "Megaword" was still around and they re-used the "OXIDIZED" puzzle. The whole segment be done in about two minutes tops... BR: I didn't think she'd be winning with those choices. Nice job. I also knew it with her picks. Pretty bad audience to start off the week. Yet again another silent $3,500 spin (which is getting WAY too common these days) and a Mystery gamble itself is silent, but THEN they start shouting "Go for it!" when she already made her decision? At least cheering on the outcome is better than nothing, I guess...Still, tomorrow and Wednesday will be a silence-fest...Also, I wish the directors wouldn't always cut to the contestant every time they land on a prize or top dollar. They do it because they want to show their reaction to the spin, but they should know by now that hardly any contestants react to anything anymore, and emphasizing that is making the current show more stale than it already is... Another thing, the theme (and the themed puzzles) is too much like "America's Game" weeks. Please drop the themes already. Hardly anybody likes them being shoved into the puzzles...If they stopped doing that, at least there would be room for more ideas. On the bright side, though, at least they now stopped playing applause during the PP description. It was almost always the canned track, so... Bland start to the week, and I don't have my hopes up for this week either for some reason...

R1: I felt that Unique should solve for the Jackpot, but at least she got a decent total thanks to that D.C. trip. R3: If the puzzle writers used NATURAL BEAUTY by itself, it would be a little too short for today's writing. Well, here we go with more North America trips again... R5: I had this w/ just the !. I can't recall the last time they used one-word puzzles like this one. Bonus Round: Most of Cassie's choices sure helped her shoot down one of Harry and Co's QU-type puzzles! I got it w/ her choices. EPISODE RATING: 7 out of 10

I knew the BR with just RSTLNE. I was surprised that she got it.
Agree that maybe Nickname wasn't such a bad category after all.

TU1&2: These took longer than they should have. At least we're back to singles play.
R1: I got this when the Jackpot wedge was hit - too bad Unique didn't. Still, she got the Washington D.C. trip and Wild Card, freeing up $350 and pink $900 for extended time. $6,700 is a nice total for the opening round... could have been bigger if she goes for the P's or doesn't pick four S's on cardboard, but still OK.
R2: Well, so much for the Wild Card, but it was (as Pat said) a risk worth taking by Unique. Interesting B&A puzzle in that you would need the towel on the rack after finishing up the rack of ribs. The rare short puzzle still nets $3,500 due to a late top dollar hit!
R3: We got one Kia half picked up early in the round and came very close to a complete car! As far as Trip Puzzles go, this one was okay but not great. Cassie left three singles behind, but she was well over the minimum and takes the lead on the strength of the cash alone. The trip boosts her into strong position, but things could change in the speed round...
TU3: Brendon has only scored on the toss-ups, but this lets him start Round 4 - could it be a comeback?
R4: Brendon's distinct pronunciation puts him close to a mis-solve, but he nearly doubles his dollars!
R5: Ooh, an exclamation point! Unfortunately, the low final spin makes the comeback impossible, but Brendon made a nice little run to get close to five figures. Third place finishes with $6,700 - no Pity or False Dignity Thousands here!
Bonus: Got it with RSTLNE as Cassie made her picks - knew QUILT right away, but the first word took a few seconds. Great solve by Cassie to add $35,000!
Overall: A lot better quality here than what we've been getting recently. Not mindblowingly great, but there weren't any obvious horrible fails, and everyone got some good money. I'll rate this episode at a high 7/10, borderline on an 8.

Cassie definitely showed why she was a good player tonight after nailing the bonus puzzle without any additional help in the bottom word despite the QU appearing!

I knew T1 would be Landmark from a mile away. I agree with the notion that Nickname should return...but I'd make it a Trivia category, with $3K for identifying the real name. R5! BR should've been Around the House. No questions. Repeats: R3: used in R1 on 1/25/07 T3: used in T3 on 12/3/08 R4: used in R4 on 4/23/09 BR: used in T1 on 1/15/04; T2 on 12/22/08 (as Around the House) |

I wonder if we are going to have a clean sweep this week in T1 for Landmark.
I didn't like the exclamation point in R5. I kept trying to think of games with exclamation marks at the end of their names and the only one I could think of was Sorry!
Nice job out of Cassie with that bonus puzzle. I had QUILT right away, and then finally got the first word before her choices came up.

A few things: 1) TPH, I suggest you use the players' names after each round. Using "R-Y-B" makes it difficult to keep track of things. 2) Are we still in Sandals Week? Because that Trip Puzzle felt like some company phraseology. 3) In response to this... I didn't like the exclamation point in R5. I kept trying to think of games with exclamation marks at the end of their names and the only one I could think of was Sorry! "Checkmate!" is a phrase from Chess, and really should've been Phrase. 4) Great job on that Bonus Round solve.  |

"THE MIGHTY MISSISSIPPI" in the category "Thing"? That doesn't even sound right. If they would be referring to the Mississippi River, the puzzle would've been more fitting in the "On The Map" category.

Hey All here, This is Brendon from this episode. I never kne there was such a good detailed break down of each show around. Great reading.
I saw Justin posted about the taping order of the shows. With 6 shows being taped and I believe from memory June 12th being the first of the 6 taped for the day, it really threw the room of contestants once we heard that too. All of a sudden, being the sixth show being taped was not as much of a drag as we thought.
About the 3500 spin of Cassie. This shot was filmed 3 times as she showed no emotion the first time, and each time they asked her to do it again, she just looked up and smiled finally saying that she could not 'fake' it. I think there was a good applause when she initially spun the 3500, just her response was not enough for the Wheel team.
Round 5 was REALLY long too! After the speed up round took effect, I think letter guesses went through us 2 whole rounds with no correct letters picked - hence the broad edit which shows us picking less usual letters first. Well picked up!

So they bothered to splice in a $3500 hit post-production - and probably altered which third it was actually on - just because of a supposed bad reaction?
Wheel really needs to stop and just let things happen as they may. A good audience reaction should not be sacrificed at all for something so trivial - in fact optimally, players should not lose concentration over a big money hit and then make worse calls (something that happened in bulk last week).

Even if I don't like people underreacting, I wouldn't ask for it to be re-shot. If it doesn't go like how they want it, too bad. Don't mess up the contestant's concentration. It's a game show, not an acting competition. Not even that many contestants react to top dollar spins anymore anyway. I don't get why, though. I guess it has something to do with the fact that the audience has less seats than it used to. People have just become less excited lately and more nervous. Compare an episode from any of the past 4 seasons to one from around 1998 and you'll see and hear huge differences. Road shows are still way better, though. TBH, I wouldn't care if "Wheel" had to resort to using paid audience members. As long as they stay enthusiastic (even if they have to overdo it), it can work. Did they have to re-shoot the spin itself, too? Anyway, glad to have you join, Brendon. After filming the show you can stick around if you choose for as many shootings of WOF as are left. Many seem to leave, and I think that is partly due to there being no contact between contestants and family/friends until after your show has been taped. One of the few surprising facts for myself, was that I could have been in the first taping, or the last taping and my guests for the show would not know before I take the stage.
Once a shoot is over, you really want to go and chat with family so it does take restraint to stay and watch more shows.
