Evening Wheel Watchers! Scott again, providing the second of my back-to-back recaps... Game on!
EPISODE #5577 - HAWAII WEEK
==============================================================
$1,000 TOSS-UP - FOOD & DRINK:
_ R E S H
C O C O N U T / M I L K
Our yellow player orders some FRESH COCONUT MILK... we're fresh out, so Denise gets $1,000 cash instead!
==============================================================
CONTESTANT INTERVIEWS:
Denise Hipskind hails from Alexander, Arkansas, but originally lived in Michigan. She and her husband, Shawn, have three children, aged 3, 2, and 1. Denise and Shawn frequently work together, as she is a Realtor and he is a builder.
Paula Brown comes to us from Germantown, Tennessee. She used to be a teacher, but now Paula is a stay-at-home mom who often volunteers at her daughter's school, Dogwood Elementary.
Gus Lopez II is a hometown contestant, born and raised in Los Angeles. He's a regional sales manager for a local electric car company. In his spare time, he practices Tae Kwon Do alongside his 9-year-old son, Gus III - both are red belts, which is one step below the black belt.
==============================================================
$2,000 TOSS-UP - PERSON:
_ E A _ O N E D
_ E T _ R _ N
Paula's not a SEASONED VETERAN yet, but she's skilled enough to win $2,000 and control of Round 1!
==============================================================
TONIGHT'S FEATURED PRIZE: Maui Kai Kaanapali and Piiholo Ranch Zipline (Travel by Hotwire) - $5,994
ROUND 1 (JACKPOT ROUND) - QUOTATION:
Paula has the right to begin the spins, but her first turn ends quickly due to Bankrupt. Gus takes over and his spins are drawing ever closer to the MDW as he goes on... but then he overshoots it all the way around to the Jackpot - it currently has $6,500 in it, but Gus will not have a chance to claim it as he misses with the M. Denise picks up the Wild Card on her first rotation with five L's, followed by the green Kia with a pair of D's. A few calls later, her turn ends with a bad R call. Paula takes advantage of the exposed pink $900, calling two B's on her second spin of the new turn... and they're the last consonants:
L E A P / T A L L
B _ I L D I N G S
I N / A / S I N G L E
B O _ N D
Paula doesn't buy the U's - she'll just recall that Superman can LEAP TALL BUILDINGS IN A SINGLE BOUND in order to pocket $2,300!
Duds: M (Gus), R (Denise)
Bankrupt: Paula (loss of turn)
Unclaimed Jackpot: $10,050
PRE-R2 SCORES:
Gus - $0
Denise - $1,000 + Wild Card
Paula - $4,300
==============================================================
ROUND 2 (MYSTERY ROUND) - BEFORE & AFTER:
Gus is the only player without money at this point, a situation which he hopes to remedy, starting out with four S's on $300. He collects the green Kia tag with two T's on his next spin but then misses with the M right after. Denise finds a big opportunity with her first spin - the Mystery wedge near the MDW! She calls an R (there's one) and picks it up to find... $10,000! After picking up $900 for a P, she buys two vowels, and the second one ends her turn - no A. Paula puts up an L and B before falling victim to her second penalty spin... Lose a Turn this time. Gus gets his turn back with one Kia tag in hand and his spins falling close to the other one - misses the first time, but hits the blue Kia half on the second spin... but he can't find a C. Tough luck for him and a big break for Denise:
S T _ _ T
D O _ B L E
E S P R E S S O
This combination of expendability and caffeine is a STUNT DOUBLE ESPRESSO, and while Pat lectures America on pronunciation, Denise cheers over the $400 in her bank plus the Mystery cash!
Duds: M (Gus), A (Denise), C (Gus)
Lose a Turn: Paula
PRE-R3 SCORES:
Gus - $0
Denise - $11,400 + Wild Card
Paula - $4,300
==============================================================
ROUND 3 (PRIZE PUZZLE ROUND) - SAME LETTER:
Denise won big last round and she gets to start this one as well. She begins with a $400 N, then a $300 R. After buying three E's, she goes right for the solve...
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ E / &
_ _ N _ _ - _ R E E
and Denise has no worries, she's FOOTLOOSE & FANCY-FREE as she claims $450 plus a trip to NAPA VALLEY! That trip will have her visit the wine country and stay at the Silverado Resort & Spa... it's valued at $9,250 - that gives Denise $9,700 for the round! Interesting side note here: not only was Same Letter used on back-to-back nights (Monday and tonight), the Same Letter was not called either time.
NAPA VALLEY SPIN ID: HP2801620 (Hillary P.)
PERFECT ROUND!
PRE-TU3 SCORES:
Gus - $0
Denise - $21,100 cash and Napa Valley trip + Wild Card
Paula - $4,300
=============================================================
$3,000 TOSS-UP - TV TITLE:
_ A Y S / _ F
_ _ _ / _ _ _ E S
Denise takes two of three toss-ups by naming the soap opera DAYS OF OUR LIVES - that increases her total to $24,100!
=============================================================
ROUND 4 - OCCUPATION:
Denise kicks off the fourth round hoping to extend her lead and hang on to the Wild Card... but in the span of three spins, she does neither. After picking up two T's on $400 and a pair of A's courtesy of Free Play, the Bankrupt near $5,000 gobbles up that $800 and the Wild Card too. Paula is hoping to close up the gap a little bit, and she meets with a little bit more success. Three quick spins and an E purchase are all she needs to solve this puzzle:
H _ _ H / _ C H _ _ _
A R T / T E A C H E R
and Paula knows her chosen career when she sees it... HIGH SCHOOL ART TEACHER nets her $3,350!
Bankrupt: Denise ($800 and Wild Card)
PRE-R5 SCORES:
Gus - $0
Denise - $24,100 cash and Napa Valley trip
Paula - $7,650
=============================================================
ROUND 5 (FULL $1,900 SPEEDUP) - SHOW BIZ:
Paula starts us off by knocking herself out with the N. Most of the other common letters are called in short order, with the odd P call thrown in by Denise. We get a possible edit with a cut to Pat following Paula's successful L call, which signals a likely triple fail on some less common consonants. Nevertheless, when it comes back to Paula...
B _ _ / _ F F _ C _
B L _ C _ B _ S T _ R
she finishes off the match by claiming $7,600 - a lot less than the budget of a BOX OFFICE BLOCKBUSTER! That takes her over $15,000 but it's just not enough to pass Denise.
Aired Duds: N (Paula), D (Gus), P (Denise)
FINAL SCORES:
Gus - GOOSEEGG ($1,000)
Denise - $24,100 cash and Napa Valley trip
Paula - $15,250
MAINGAME WINNINGS: $40,350
============================================================
$100,000 BONUS ROUND - PEOPLE:
Denise spins the bonus wheel around to the second A in AMERICA'S (the one adjacent to the apostrophe). RSTLNE gives us five letters to begin:
_ _ _ S / _ _
_ L L / _ _ E S
Denise chooses DPM and A to fill in some more spaces...
_ _ D S / _ _
A L L / A _ E S
Just like last night, we get an immediate solve: KIDS OF ALL AGES are cheering, as is the audience when they see that Denise has won $30,000 in additional cash! That makes her final total $54,100 when the Napa Valley trip is added to her cash.
