The 1/2 car tags are NOT in play this week but they will appear for most of this season. This time, they will be placed on a whole wedge. Let me explain again how it works -- the plates are available in each of the first three rounds. A player must collect two of them and solve the puzzle in one round to win a brand new car. If he/she solves with just one of them, it will NOT be taken away by any BANKRUPTS the rest of the way out. Regardless of what happens after a plate is picked up, it will be replaced with a new one at the start of the next round if necessary.

This was a pretty shaky start to the season.
-Tossups: Well, it turns out that R and K's guess fits the second Tossup. Too bad they weren't specific.
-R1: I got it quickly with TSE.
-R2: That colon gave it away so I got it with no letters showing.
-R3: This was a pretty ugly round and the Felixes' guess made NO SENSE AT ALL. There is NO such thing as MINOR BUSINESS.
-R4: I'm surprised it had to take this long for somebody to solve this one.
Bonus Round: I had it immediately after their choices appeared. Always depressing to have bad timing solves like what you just saw.

For a premiere, this was a very poor start. The toss-up missolve was fine, but R3 was just careless. I can understand R4, at least - they probably thought they had no shot at winning, and it was amazing they even got 7. Super big PP providing all the cushion didn't leave the best taste in my mouth, either. Like Andy says, a pretty decent slab of black & white.
BR should have been solved with those letters, but the BR in the first place wasn't easy enough for a premiere. You'd think a lightbulb would have gone off on LIGHTS / NIGHTS (although again, should have had -TY). Reflects the mediocre contestant quality as well tonight.
I also don't get doing a detailed Maxwell promo on the premiere.
But the big story really to start is that all the 1/2 cardboard adjustments, $700 to $500, etc. is ready for the license plates... and yet apparently on these mid-July tapings, when Mario got his initial report, they didn't decide to put them on quite yet. This is just a stupid, inconsistent way that makes today's press release look dumb for a week. Dealing with this again on Halloween will also be annoying.
I need to adjust WOFTracker "back" for these 11 shows (or more), and am looking into a small website to host stat reports for each episode. So excuse me while I get adjusted... come on, Wheel, you really made the major gameplay change AFTER the first two weeks? You were planning to move the WC and decrease $700 anyways?

Here's some notes I spotted during the episode:
TU1: A typical season-starting puzzle here.
TU2: Good guess with BEVERAGE - it fit but that wasn't it.
R1: Had the gist of it fairly quick, but took a few more letters to nail down the exact phrasing.
R2: Not sure exactly when I got it (I was cooking at the time), but it was very near the beginning. The colon was indeed a definite giveaway.
R3: MINOR? Doesn't even fit, plus there's no E in MINOR. A careless mis-solve here costs them some cash.
TU3/Speedup: Good effort by the Howards to take the Tossup and then the Speedup for a lot over money, but they came up just short.
BR: I had this easily with their letter choices. During the 10 seconds, I heard both words from them, but not at the same time. Definitely not starting with a bang here...
Overall, not great, but not excessively bad. Pretty much par for the course, so I agree with the 5/10.

But thank the folks at the show for providing most of the taping information. A small correction, though. The PP trip was St. Maarten, not St. Croix Anyway, I think I'll do some commentary for every episode from now on about each segment. First off, I LOVE the new graphics, especially the opening animation. I think it's odd that they're still playing with the Season 28 rules, but with the Wild Card's new position. The $700 was already gone, so it was all planned out. Things are going to be weird on the first compilation week... R1: Same as Andy, I got it once the Es came up. The 4 Ts on the gift tag...that's why they should give you $300 per letter with it.  It seemed like there was some weird editing around the time the blue team Bankrupted though. The sound effect went off kind of early, and Pat's speech sounded like it was cropped or something. Wayoshi, was there anything off normal spin patterns from them? R2: I'm mad at myself for not knowing the second part. I knew it was POTC right away, but I know nothing about the series. And it's a shame the $50,000 cash bonus is gone. I know a lot of people got the card just for Wheel. More budget problems, it looks like.  A good choice for a Prize Puzzle, though. I'll take titles over WAYD? or "(Half-)Phrase" any day. R3: I got it once the Rs came up. How did they think it was MINOR? Did they forget it was a "Before & After"? Or did they think it was spelled MINNER?  Also, it looks like they sound the buzzer after missolves now. R4: I got it with either the Rs or the Es. I forget exactly when. Surprising it took them that long. BR: I knew it with their choices. Shame they got it too late, but they shouldn't have considered LIGHT or NIGHT for the entire time. They need to pay more attention to the used letter board. The audience was pretty good. Not great, but much better than most Season 28 shows. They should have cheered for the $2,500 spin, though. I don't want this to become the norm. It's slowly happening on road shows now, too. But at least they were sympathetic for the car loss, without any sweetening help. The LATs were another story, though...The sound crew thankfully went pretty light on the pre-recorded applause track tonight. I didn't hear it at all until the SPIN ID drawing. It's not often that they don't use it during Pat and Vanna's entrance or the majority of the PP description. I think the show would work fine without it since tonight they showed they didn't have to use it much. EDIT: Never mind. They did use it during the opening, but at a lower volume than usual. Also, I loved how some of the audience members could be heard saying the chant. ;D So, a not-too-bad way to start off the season, but odd that the 1/2 Car tags weren't there. They could have at least kept the $700 if the $500 isn't a separate add-on. |

That was a solid maingame, w/ the sisters almost quietly pulling off the comeback over Karen & Ryan.
The BR heartbreakers from the end of last season continue; a lot of you (including myself) had that after Karen & Ryan's choices were revealed.

Definitely strange not to have the 1/2 Car plates, but then again, over the years there have been a lot of new additions that didn't debut with the season. Some examples include the Surprise wedge, the $10,000 "Oreo" wedge, and the debut of the single-template wheel system.
But I've gotta go with the consensus on this - why make the moves to set it up and then not execute it fully? Makes no sense to do it halfway, so I hope they corrected it quickly.

Why is it so hard for contestants to figure out the RSTLNE thing? "Oh, this can't be HTS, the S is already gone." I've never heard anyone say "start with a bang", only "go out with a bang" (kickin' up dust / Honey, tonight I'm all wound up...) They have a history of debuting things sometime after the first week, which seems to date back to at least 1987 (Big Month of Cash started one month in). |

Tonight's episode was below average largely for the typical reasons. Some nights you just get a bunch of silly mistakes - that can even happen on the season premiere. R1 and R2 were straightforward enough, but the R3 missolve was pretty careless. I also wonder if that was genuine strategy going on in the speed-up round or if the contestants just didn't know it.
This may be being nitpicky, but I'm going to side with Wayo on the BR here - that was too hard. On the premiere you want something obvious like BUS ROUTE so you can start the season off ending on a decent note. That particular BR was relatively easy and would have been fine even tomorrow, but I can see why people would have trouble with it tonight (although with their letters, I dunno....they were close though).
It was particularly annoying and surprising to have the 1/2 Car wedges not in play tonight (and the mystery still in R3). I wonder why they waited so long to pull the trigger on those changes.

Alright, I'm hoping to join the reviews. I'll try to keep the criticism at a minimum. First Two Tossups: That one thousand dollar tossup solve was very impressive from my perspective, I only had A. However, for the second one, I had it quickly with just three letters. Round 1: The Howards managed to waste T on the Gift Tag and wasted a possible $10,000 for those Ts. And while it is FP, I wouldn't go for something that you know is there... Round 2: I'll go with what I know here... that solve was too early, when there were two Bs, 3Ns and Ss. Round 3: Too bad the Felix family couldn't cash in on me. (you know what I mean ) Third Tossup and Round Four: I got the third tossup one or two letters before the solve. I'm not sure any of these players had solving skills here... I got that Round 4 puzzle very quickly. 21+ year olds vs. a 17 year old. ;D Bonus Round: Unfortunately, I missed the Bonus Round, so no commentary here. Episode Rating: 3/10Overall View: Pretty boring episode, no Jackpot wins or $10,000 mystery wins, but it was great to see the green $500 back. |

Time to chime in with my opinion. First off, in the opening round, you should never, EVER waste multiple letters on a gift tag or prize space. If you're going to call a letter that there's a multiple of, save it for the big money spaces. Also, that guess by the Felix family in the third round was just plain stupid. Absolutely no reason for them to screw that one up. Finally, the bonus puzzle was very solvable in my opinion. No reason not to get that one either. At least the 100K wasn't in the envelope, or that would have been a painful way to start the 29th year. Here's hoping for a better episode tomorrow night.

There may be a reason why the 1/2 car wedges weren't there. A pair of cars will be wayy to expensive for a main game (easily more than 20k.). perhaps that is why they are removed now since it makes no sense to give 1 car to a pair of contestants. but im speculating only.

It's the human tendency of calling a common letter to start off / ensure no loss of turn no matter what (some contestants don't even pay attention to where the Wheel lands on), even if the F of OF is obvious, or BY, etc. WOFTracker will be paying special attention to this kind of "waste", I'm interested in it as well. |

While Ryan is fluctuating around perfect rotation, Karen is more normal for a girl - so a big difference. As far as around the supposed edit, though, this looks fine. For that dang Maxwell thing at the end, it felt like a lot of spins were cut short, though. As for today's unusual stats: -A pair of quads were wasted on cardboard. That's pretty bad honestly , -Vanessa & Dave called 3 duds in R4... $0 in a long speed-up. Game really turned on them after that missolve, although Ryan & Karen pretty much cruised on the double big prizes. |

The 1/2 car tags are NOT in play this week but they will appear for most of this season. I was very surprised and disappointed. Why couldn't this new feature start at the beginning of the season? And I think that, since we saw them on the set for next week's Spa Fantasy, that'll be the debut and it'll be permanent. My guess is they felt like it didn't make sense for a family week (but I'm sure they'll be in the 6th show taping for this week). Also, the Mystery Round will move to here for most of this season. Even if for some reason, the 1/2 CAR couldn't debut in the premiere, I don't understand why that didn't start this season. It's particularly surprising since they did some 1/2 CAR prep by they getting rid of $700, replace it with $500, and move the WC. In fact, I was thinking quite a bit into R2 that maybe they're no longer announcing Mystery sponsors. I think though that like the 1/2 CAR, once it debuts, it'll be permanent, and I'm sure that'll debut with Spa Fantasy next week. And even if the 1/2 CAR is only in some weeks, I can't see that with a certain round being a certain number. ( NOTE: The PP destination pops up on the video wall behind the contestant panel.) That was a really wonderful surprise! I hope that's permanent! Though it would have been interesting if that had stayed on there up until commercial. However, another great surprise is the Sony Card bug is gone! As great as it is to hear as much as possible from Jim Thornton in his first week as permanent announcer, it's great to be spared that extra announcing when there's so much as it stands. And the new way of doing the PP with only one word having to be associated with the puzzle is probably not for every episode, or if it is, it'll debut with the 1/2 CAR. Mystery Round - BEFORE AND AFTER I wonder if just maybe they'll go back to BEFORE & AFTER/SAME NAME being in every episode like in Season 27. I think for season premiere BRs, this makes Season 25 with MIXING BOWL look good! Also, I love the Pat & Vanna talk backdrop! It's great to see it in that framed in a curved film strip like image rather than the usual slant! I was afraid they were going to use what they had last season, since the logo didn't really change, and the Pat & Vanna talk backdrop was the only logo related thing they had. And don't forget that the fifth week of Season 17 had A LOT of changes -- $1000 added to Speedup, the white borders on the dollar amounts, the Preview Puzzle, and $250 gone, something that Pat made us look out for but not reveal until the Pat & Vanna talk that Friday. And the BEFORE & AFTER/SAME NAME rule of Season 27 also debuted in week 5, since there were only three episodes before that to have neither category, and only one since on April 12, 2010. Nicky, by "single-template wheel system" I mean having the same basic wheel layout throughout the show. Conversely, what was used prior to 1996 (where the wheel changed for R3, and then again for R4) is usually called something like a 3-template system (although I've also heard the number 2.5 used on occasion).
The single-template system debuted (according to the Timeline data) on 9/16/96, the same day as the Jackpot - which would be in Week 3 of Season 14.
Also, don't forget that Halloween Week was taped before this week, so it may not have the 1/2 Car tags either, if Wayoshi is correct.

Land on any cardboard wedge (Free Play not included, for obvious reasons) and call an R (unless you know it, you know there aren't any, you know there are a ton or it's a puzzle like WAYD (call a G, not an N!) and Same Name without the ampersand (call a D, NOT an N!). They should watch where theyland on and what letters they pick... T on the Gift Tag is just careless, no matter where you are in the round. |

Also, another disappointing surprise I forgot to mention -- as sad as it is that there are no more animations and they're back to logo-related openings and the same exact opening for each CC episode (though I do love the opening and there are advantages to that), there's no longer the theme related special effect during the category reveals. Yes, not every week last season had them, but I can't see, if this was last season, a week with this theme not having it. Maybe like in Season 27, they'll have it for Halloween week and whatever Christmas themed show they have (either the Secret Santa sweepstakes or Wheel Goes to the Movies if it's like Holiday Movie Magic), and maybe Sandals Romance if it is indeed like Sweethearts week.

It seemed like there was some weird editing around the time the blue team Bankrupted though. The sound effect went off kind of early, and Pat's speech sounded like it was cropped or something. Wayoshi, was there anything off normal spin patterns from them?
A good choice for a Prize Puzzle, though. I'll take titles over WAYD? or "(Half-)Phrase" any day.
Also, it looks like they sound the buzzer after missolves now.
