A lot of interesting stuff has happened on Wheel, but since YouTube and digital recording haven't always been around, a lot of those moments only exist in storage at Sony, if at all. However, some fans like to talk about interesting moments they remember seeing on the show many years ago.
What Wheel moments often cited by other fans, or even remember yourself, do you wish existed online?
This is my wish list...
- 1975?: A contestant solves TWEEDLEDUM AND TWEEDLEDEE in the opposite order and is ruled correct.
- 1980: Alex Trebek hosts.
- 1981: "ABRAHAM BINCOLN"..."He gave the Bettysburg Address" from Pat's first week.
- 1982?: "MORE FUN THAN A BARREL OF VIKINGS"
- 1984?: "E.T. TAKES ONE TO KNOW ONE"
- 1985? (Nighttime): A contestant loses over $60K for forgetting the I in STAR LIGHT STAR BRIGHT FIRST STAR I SEE TONIGHT.
- 1987?: Elderly lady missolves "FRANKLY MY DEAR I DON'T GIVE A DARN"
- 1987? (Nighttime): Pat lifts up the $5,000 wedge during the closing, revealing the $2,000 wedge used on daytime.
- 1989 (Daytime): Rolf hits Bankrupt on the Final Spin but thinks he hit $2,000.
- 1989 (Nighttime): Full late-S6 episode with players Tammy/Janice/Randy. It was the first episode of WOF I had ever taped, from GSN from someone else's house. I only had from the end of R2 onward and have since lost the tape.
- 1990? (Nighttime): Because of time needed to promote a "Cash and Splash" sweepstakes, both the $2,500 and $3,500 wedges are used in Round 2.
- 1994?: AX is the Bonus Round puzzle.
- 1996: Double Play getting used on the $10K prize. (people talk about this all the time on ATGS and GSF, but no traders appear to have the episode)
- 1996: Any episode where Double Play is used on a Prize wedge (recalled by a couple ATGS users), or where a contestant attemped to use it after spinning, apparently a common misplay according to at least one GSF user.
- 1996: The first Jackpot win with the puzzle GREEN EGGS AND HAM BY DR. SEUSS, solved with only the G's revealed.
- 1998: Travel Channel host Zak Bagans' episode before he became famous (Family Week in Las Vegas).
- 1998: A man wins a custom-built car worth $105K on a Vegas episode.
- 1998: (early S16) A contestant calls nine T's for the Free Spin. I was in the audience for that taping session and that's the only thing I remember about any of the three shows I saw regarding gameplay.
- 1999?: A male contestant solves the Next Line Please puzzle TWINKLE TWINKLE LITTLE STAR and gives a bonus answer of "How I wonder where you are" and is buzzed followed by a detailed explanation from Pat saying how that wasn't the official lyric even though some sing it that way (I sometimes heard it that way growing up myself, which is why that moment always stuck out to me).
- 2001?: PIKACHU is the Bonus Round puzzle.
- 2003: The first taped week with the new Wheel font (and the initially way-too-high Lose a Turn vector), possibly Teen Best Friends week. A contestant from that week uploaded a copy on his Twitter about a year ago, and I watched it, but stupidly didn't download it. The file has since been deleted. I have the now-dead t.co link, but can't find who uploaded it, otherwise I'd ask him to re-upload it.
- 2004?: A contestant solves a $6K Speed-Up without calling a letter...for $0 (Personal vague recollection. Not entirely sure $6K was the value in play or that they solved for $0).
-2006: The second tie of the Toss-Up era. (Turns out this is on YouTube after all)
- 2006?: Vanna imitates the signs given to her from offstage telling her what's in the Bonus Round envelope.
- 2007: Any S25 premiere week episode with a Big Money Wedge cash-in with the "Big Money" scoreboard graphic representing the value as a prize.
- 2007: On a NY show, the Wild Card is used on the Big Money Wedge $7500, but for a wrong letter (or any episode with a Wild Card use on the wedge before that rule was abolished).
- 2008: The last taped appearance of Slogan where a team preceded EAT FRESH with "Subway" when solving.
- 2008: The last appearance of Where Are We?, also reran on a Saturday in mid-2010, where I remember seeing it.
- 2008: The Hawaii episode where the second Bankrupt and $3,500 wedge were misplaced, which caused a player to lose the MDW (only currently exists through offscreen stills taken by germanname posted on a WOF Yahoo! group).
- 2010: The Prize Puzzle WHAT WILL THEY THINK OF NEXT? is not for a trip, a fact that Pat hypes throughout the segment. Seeing that just about all of S27 exists in some form among collectors, Surely someone has the episode?
- 2010: A contestant gets buzzed out while deciding what to do on Free Play, then hits it again on her next turn.
- 2010: The first ever solve attempt on Free Play, also reran on a Saturday in mid-2012. I meant to watch it then but forgot and didn't tune in until the Speed-Up round.
