Okay, so I've been reading up as much as I can on here, including details on EXPRESS, etc. but figured I'd start my own thread quickly before my taping on Thursday (eeeee!) in case any former contestants have some friendly advice to help me dominate. Basically, this is also where I check in on questions I forgot to ask katemonster before she left for her lovely Hawaiian vacation (courtesy of Wheel of Fortune, of course). So here are some thoughts/questions running through my head... - Are you able to get the hang of the weight and your force with the wheel to the point where you can guess approximately where it will be landing on your spin? (For example, if you know the puzzle but want to go for some extra cash, can you glance at the wheel and know that, based on how far your previous spins have been rotating that it might end up near a bankrupt, so maybe you don't go for it?) - Typically, only the 1st toss-up is really related to the theme-week, right (with the exception maybe of Disney family week that has been airing?)... so I don't need to know *too* much about Wal-Mart... right? Haha. - Any idea how many people are in the audience in the Culver City studio? - Bonus round... CDMA or BGHO? Convince me. Anything else I'm forgetting that I NEED to know? Thanks friends! Jillian

Jillian, Congratulations on getting this far! You'll get lots of practice spinning the Wheel before your taping begins. Try to get the technique down early then focus on how far you get the Wheel around. It's possible to gauge the strength of your spin, but be careful! Don't try to "aim the Wheel," because that's not allowed.
For themed puzzles, you'll typically see them in the first Toss-Up, but you never know when else. On the Prize Puzzle, though, anticipate things pertaining to tropical places.
For the Bonus Round, it really depends on the puzzle. More often than not, though, BGHO seems to be the better combo. Some have even gone so far as to say that FGHI is even better. One thing to remember: H is actually more common than L or R. CDMA is often a statistical trap. If it's a THING in the Bonus, and it's two words, anticipate an adjective + noun combo.
There's a wealth of other advice I can give, much of it pertaining to letter strategies, so hit me up if you want them. Other than that, here's the most important piece of advice: HAVE FUN!

1) I believe after maybe a round or two you'll get the hang of it, I spun it and it was TOTALLY heavy. It's gonna need some elbow grease. 2) I don't think that the toss-ups are related to the theme at all, just concentrate on the puzzle with your thumb on the buzzer ready to solve it. 3) The good letters are probably C, D, H, M, P, G, A, I, O, U, stick with those letters.
Lastly, just have fun and know the fact that you are gonna walk away with some dough and you get to be on national TV. Relax and become friendly with the contestants. Have fun taping, we hope to see you on WOF soon!

As regards the wheel, I couldn't tell you since I've probably never been within a thousand miles of it. Other puzzles than the first toss-up may be themed, it's happened before. They might not theme directly off the Walmart sponsorship and may branch out into the general line of family, so I'd be ready for that. Bonus round... absolutely, positively BGHO. CDMA is the popular call, since it solved so many puzzles in the 80s and 90s, but it's just not as reliable on modern Wheel. Check the recaps, and you'll see where Dan (WarioSajak) has evaluated the different combos and checked how many letters each gives. BGHO is generally the winner, while CDMA normally comes second (though other combos can sometimes beat it as well - like WKYI on some of the weird and wacky puzzles).

Great, great thread idea, Jillian. Heck, who knows, this might even be the "So you're going to actually be on WOF...?" thread. Thank you so much for it. Okay: I know nothing about spinning the wheel itself, but I know it weighs 2400 pounds. It's heavy, and hard to get all the way around even once. As it's said, don't aim, but try to calculate how many pegs (3 pegs=one wedge) your average spin goes. If it looks like Bankrupt, LAT might be in the future, I'd try buying vowels, if at all possible. You can guess it, but I'd be the one to calculate it out, myself. It's usually accurate, too, not even out of choice, but the heaviness of the wheel. Themed puzzles: R3 is bound to be tropical, and since it's Walmart week, I'd think a lot of the puzzles will be about bargains, saving, etc. Family is an interesting breakout that I could see maybe for like round 2. Tossups are typically themed, but not as much as some of the maingame ones. Culver City seats less than 500, I remember hearing and reading it is closer to 350. BGHO. Clearly. DCMA worked most effectively around half the percentage BGHO did last season alone. If you're stumped, try putting CDMA or WKYI in the blanks-especialy the vowels, I tend to think they're the crucial part of any words. For what it's worth, my process, if purely from myself, no stats work: ETRNSAHODL. Of course, if you see blanks in the maingame (What are you Doing? and -ING), that are obvious to fill in, go for those. I personally would also spin for all multiples in the puzzle, and save slightly less frequent letters (not like Q, of course) on the lower values. This doesn't always work, but usually pays off for more than you'd think. Most of all, as Jon D. said, enjoy the experience, getting to meet TV icons, playing an amazing game, and have fun! After all, if everything goes wrong, you still have $1,000. What other time in life can you say that? Can't wait to hear how it goes, both after taping and airing. Best of luck, BAV is on your side! Sadly we can't offer $250 discounts for you.

I can't speak from experience on the show, only through developed strategies over the years of playing the games and watching the show.
I don't think the guys before me stressed this enough but BUY VOWELS! Especially if you know a few words in the puzzle. I would buy them as soon as you have money to get more information quickly to increase those odds of solving the puzzle. I hate watching people spin with a few grand or more then calling a bad consonant. It can really make the difference in a game as demonstrated countless times in the past.
If you know the puzzle, only spin if there are trips (3s) or better still left in the puzzle. Pick up the doubles if you want to but try to hold out for a decent value on the trips. This is just my personal take on what's left, do what you will with it.
In the bonus round I like CHAD or D-C-H-A if I don't know the puzzle. Again, this tends to be personal preference with whoever you ask... regardless of B-G-H-O coming out with the victory last season.
Most importantly be smart. Heaven forbid if modern contestants actually think before they speak. Don't be afraid to call those obvious letters. Especially with categories like WAYD? and SAME NAME when the "&" isn't there.
Don't be afraid to ask anybody for help and good luck with your show!

If you want to try to use spin patterns to your advantage, by all means try. My warning though is if you become conscious of it, it might be harder to consistently repeat. That and, some of them are hard to calculate roughly what 3-wedge range is coming up next in real time, especially more on stage. I rant probably a bit too often about people noticing it - the contestant coordinators tell you to not look at the Wheel at all and focus on the puzzle for a reason. But you are on a team, so maybe with some smart planning you can pull it off?
As for other stuff... if you land on Express, don't know the puzzle but have at least two letters you know are there, I would take the plunge. I think there's a good chance at least one of two letters will lead up to more, and in some game situations by R3, a significant successful Express Ride would help a ton towards going to the BR (and maybe get Hawaii!).

- Are you able to get the hang of the weight and your force with the wheel to the point where you can guess approximately where it will be landing on your spin? (For example, if you know the puzzle but want to go for some extra cash, can you glance at the wheel and know that, based on how far your previous spins have been rotating that it might end up near a bankrupt, so maybe you don't go for it?) You could probably put just a little bit less effort into the spin to have it come up a bit short, but you can't make it obvious. It will really help if you memorize the Wheel layout. Here it is, plus the important game-changing wedges that aren't exclusive to one round. I'd save this image on your phone or print it out. It's important to note that the 1/2 Car tags might not be in play during your week, as they're usually not used during team weeks if the teams are not entirely married couples. The first Toss-Up is almost-always themed. If not Walmart, it'll be family-themed, most likely. If anything else, there is a chance one of the main puzzles (often part of a Before & After or Same Name) can be themed, too. Sometimes the $3,000 Toss-Up can be themed as well, but not quite as often. It all depends on how much presence they want the theme to have. For some more obscure themes, there usually aren't more than 1-2 themed puzzles. For others like Pet Lovers or Teacher's Week, there are about 3-4 themed puzzles, sometimes so much that the only puzzles that aren't themed are the Prize Puzzle and Bonus Round. I doubt your week will be this case, though. I believe about 200 at most. If you watch "The Price is Right" at all, their audience holds about 300, if that helps as some kind of reference. If you're worried about them making too much noise and making you nervous or something...they won't. Chances are, they won't even cheer for you much, if at all, if you land on the top dollar value. CDMA is a no-no these days. Always consider what letters are likely part of the solution before you do any picking. Definitely don't waste picks. If the category is "What Are You Doing?", absolutely do not pick a G for a consonant and I for your vowel (This goes ONLY for the BR. For main puzzles, do start with N, I, G of course). If there's a "T_E" when RSTLNE come up, don't pick H. If there's a "_N_" between two words, don't pick D or A, as it's probably AND. Otherwise, BGHO are great picks. Some other advice... - The house minimum for team weeks is $2,000, not $1,000. Remember that there's no rule prohibiting you from solving with $0 if you don't feel spinning for the last consonant or two is worth it. Many people spin, spin $600 or so, then call a letter that's up there once, then solve for that money which is bumped up to the same $1,000/$2,000 they would get if they solved with $0. - Try to have at least a total of $7,000 or so built up by the end of R2 so that if you don't win the Prize Puzzle, you won't be overtaken too badly and have a better chance to catch up. - If the category is "Same Name", "Husband & Wife", or "Family" and there's no "&" on the board (which there probably won't be), the three letter word is "AND". - "Song/Artist" and "Title/Author" guarantee the word "BY", and "Star & Role" guarantees "AS" (though these categories are rarely used). - If you get into some good conversation with your fellow contestants, tell them about this website. (But not within earshot of the staff. ) We all wish you and your father the best of luck this week!

Another strategy you could use in the maingame: if you get a Food & Drink puzzle and there's a 4-letter word somewhere in the middle, your best bet would be to try the word WITH first. As far as the Bonus Round goes, I have to agree with Jonathan; it all depends on the puzzle. Pay really close attention to the Used Letter Board. Another thing you could do is you could try to think of as many possible answers as you can before Pat asks you for your first letter, and pick letters based on the possibilities you come up with (preferably letters that you're not 100% sure will be in the puzzle). If nothing else, go with BGHO in the Bonus Round, as others have mentioned.
Most importantly, keep a positive attitude and have fun!

Speaking as someone who's been on two game shows myself (with an appearance on Wheel hopefully on the way, given that I'm in the pool), allow me to chime in--and I'd like to think I know what I'm talking about: You can get all the advice you want from us, but at the end of the day, it's *your* game. If all these tips and tricks are becoming too difficult for you to remember, then don't try to remember them. A clear mind is the best approach to the game you can possibly have. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity! So enjoy it. So what if you don't play a perfect game? So what if you don't go to the bonus round? So what if all you hit are Bankrupts and Lose a Turns? Think about how many people would KILL to be in your position, and how many people you got past to get to this point. The hard part's over! Everything else is just the icing on the cake. And if you make a fortune off it, all the better. Bottom line: it's okay to be nervous! Anyone who tells you they aren't nervous is a liar. One little nitpick I will correct: Prizes overestimated the seating capacity in the studio. When I was in the audience for a few shows, I don't think it could've held more than 200 people, tops. I've heard 140 thrown around for Jeopardy!'s audience (and judging from the times I've been there, that figure is more or less accurate--might even be lower than that), so I'd imagine Wheel's would be of a comparable size since they're on the same lot.

Congratulations!! You are going to have SO much fun!
The wheel - I am not a particularly strong person and I had a seriously hard time spinning that thing. I am pretty sure I gave myself whiplash (not joking) from trying to spin it and I barely would make it half way around. That being said, honestly, there is just so much going on when you are up there, that the last thing you will be thinking about is even imagining trying to aim the thing. If you want to risk another spin, go for it, but things move FAST and I don't think you should be spending time trying to figure out where you think it will land.
One piece of advice that I found really helpful was - when you are up there, focus on the PUZZLE (and the used letter board). Don't look at the wheel when other people are spinning, or even really when YOU spin. Pat will let you know what you land on, and the more time you have to focus on the puzzle and try to figure it out, the better off you will be.
I echo what everyone else said. People here are super smart and helpful and are such a wealth of information. Have a fantastic time!!

In the end, Jillian, as others have said...it's YOUR game. There's going to be so much to pay attention to and think about on the "show" side of things, as well (not looking silly, not stumbling over your words, moving quickly, focusing on the puzzle/ULB, etc.), that the "game" may almost become secondary. That being said, though, do your best, and have fun with it all. You're part of an elite group now! I will offer this piece of advice: when calling a letter, making a decision, or solving, look Pat right in the eyes so he can watch your lips move. There will be no doubt in his mind what you say when you speak to him. Same goes when you're doing warm-ups and rehearsals with the CCs.

Good luck! Here's my two cents....
Forget about Wheel patterns! I'm not a petite girl by any means, and I had difficulty with the wheel. My hand hurt the next day from "Pulling and the Pushing" the wheel. I was only able to roughly estimate my spin strength. I had gone to the show thinking I could aim it, but no chance for me. It will also depend on the situation...like the classic solve the prize puzzle with no money or take a chance. ( In your case since you're probably looking at 2 trips? I think that decision is easier to make.)
As for the bonus round...my predetermined letters would be D G H O. I found a blog by a statistics person siting those as the most frequent. I think it's best to go to the bonus round, take a deep breath when you see the puzzle, and call the letters that 'speak' to you. A letter pattern may strike you and you should go with it.
Gary, Jackie, Shannon, and Alex will make sure you're prepared. I know this is easier said than done, but try not to think about the other contestants. Don't psyche yourself out about what they are doing when it's their turns. Do your best and keep an eye on the totals, especially in the later rounds to determine how risky you want to get with continued spinning.
And for goodness sakes...If you land on EXPRESS...Hop on!
I could be much more specific after New Years!

On that note about later rounds: play out the fourth or fifth round as much as you can, especially if you're behind. Your goal at that point will be survival. The optimal situation is to have the bells ring for Final Spin, have it be your turn, and know the puzzle outright. Then, after Sajak makes the spin, cash in on the biggest multiple remaining (if any), then solve. I employed this strategy to the letter to help me come from behind and win!
As we saw last night, board the Express, especially if it's early or late in the puzzle. Luis played the Express perfectly. He used the money he won from his consonants to buy a stream of vowels, filled in logical letters, then went word-by-word. This is absolutely the best way (at least so far) to play Express.

Jillian,
I am a person in your (old) shoes... Today is Sunday and my taping is Friday. I've been checking out the boards here for the past 10 days, trying to read through all the awesome posts... I wish I would've come here sooner and started preparing immediately after the Wheelmobile departed Kansas City. But alas, here I am and in typical fashion, I am now panicking because my self-esteem is shaky at times. lol. Now that I'm actually going to be on the show, I am doubting my previously-viewed-as-awesome Wheel skills.
One thing that is hard for me is that they weren't kidding when they said, "You'll get notified two weeks before your taping date."
For me, this whole process has happened VERY QUICKLY.
June 23rd - Hot and Humid! I attended the Wheelmobile event in Kansas City and was the FIRST PERSON CALLED from the "Drum of Dreams" raffle system. It was definitely something I was never expecting, yet I had a feeling in my gut that it would happen for me... about 5 seconds before they called the first name I turned to my friend Cathy and said, "I have a sinking, anxious feeling in the pit of my stomach," then BOOM the world stands still as I hear them call GRETCHEN!. I drop my drink and book it down to the stage and as I'm bouncing down the aisle I think, "Now I know how exhilarated the contestants on The Price is Right feel!" Wrong show, but same emotion! I get my Polaroid taken and then hop up on stage. I was so pumped up on audience adrenaline that I am a complete ham in front of the camera. I tell the adorable host what I do for a living then he asks me about hobbies. I tell him that I love classic movies and he asks which is my favorite. I of course reply Wizard of Oz and he asks, "Why?" and without missing a beat I turn to the audience and yell out "cause There's NO PLACE LIKE HOME!!!!!!!!!!!" I went on to call out letters confidently even though I called a used letter. Whatever. It was humid and I was sweaty. We are told: If you are called back for a second and final audition in Kansas City, you'll know by September.
Sept 17th - Just as I was thinking, "Well, it's almost the middle/end of September, so I guess I didn't make 2nd auditions. I'll try again next time. Glad I tried my best," my email inbox gets a treat. Is this real? Is it a prank?? The email tells me that I've made it to the next round of auditions on September 27th. That's only 10 days away! Thank goodness I have enough vacation days left at work to take time off to: 1) get my hair done, 2) with my friend Annabelle for clothing decisions, and 3) go to the all-day audition!
Sept 27th - The audition at the Hotel President was a lot of work! I can write more about it later, but it was exactly like Jonathan (jmdarrall) says in his post. Jackie, Shannon, and Gary were there and they were looking for people who were excited and loud and who could solve puzzles! Luckily I can do 2 out of 3.
They told us finalists, "If you don't hear from us by letter within 2 weeks, you didn't make the show." I wasn't sure how I had done, but I figured WHO CARES? I HAD FUN. I met a new friend, Cristina, seated next to me at the auditions and after it was over we promptly went downstairs to the hotel bar to toast our good luck at having made it this far. (On a side note, I ordered a dirty martini and it was absolutely awful!! Undrinkable!! I am not the kind of person to do this, but I had to return the drink! The bartender asked me why I didn't like it and I made a horrid face and said, "Oddly, it had a sweet taste to it?!" Then he said that Triple Sec is the house ingredient in all margaritas!!!!!!!! What the h???) Meeting her and discovering lots of shared interests was definitely an unexpected but serendipitous part of the adventure.
Oct 11th - Exactly TWO WEEKS to the day of the audition, and just as my hope is fading after checking the mailbox every day, the envelope with the WOF logo arrives!!! OH MY GOSH!!!!!!!! IS THIS REAL??? The letter says that I'll hear from a contestant coordinator within 18 months with a taping date. I figure that I have plenty of time to study puzzles more thoroughly, really analyze the game-playing aspects of it, and to generally have more months to lose about 5 pounds and grow my hair out so that I don't have a mullet on national TV.
Oct 21 - I'm out of town all week on an intensive business trip. I am relieved that I don't have to worry about WOF for a little while because my life has been SO hectic lately. I have been crazy busy with personal and professional activities and just don't have time to think about playing a game for money on national TV right now.
Oct 22nd - The email from Shannon comes stating that my tape date is set for November 8th!!!!
HOLY LIVING CRA_P!!!!!!!!!!!!
Oct 25-Nov 3 - every spare moment is spent playing WOF on iPad, doing Jumble, crosswords and Cryptoquip. This is fun! I love word games. Oh wait, 5 hours of this is spent shopping for a freakin' outfit to wear! The regulations on what not to wear go against my personal asthetic. (no black? no necklaces? crud, i'm in trouble!)
Nov 3rd - My friend Cristina (from Wheel auditions!) drove 3+ hours to KC to participate in a 5K against Lung Cancer. Making friends is truly a lasting highlight of this entire experience. We watch a DVR'd episode together and she whips my ass. UH OH. Does this mean I suck? My self-confidence is eroding. Cristina kicks ass in the run and leaves about 10 am this morning. All of a sudden, like a ton of Bankrupt wedges, it hits me that I only have a few days to prepare. Cristina made the show too but she has not received a taping date. I'm so happy for both of us, but suddenly so worried. Do I suck? What if I am a person who takes the $1000 pity money just to "get by" every round? Is that so wrong??
Suddenly, it's FULL-ON PANIC MODE.
That's where I am right now. I want so badly to have fun and just enjoy the experience!
I will get there, but for now my heart is beating out of my chest and I am full of doubts. I pray for a little peace! I know I'm sososososo lucky to get to where I am. Just can't believe that I am going to meet my idols in a few days. I've always been a bookworm and not a game-player so this is all new to me!

gakgakg, It's totally normal to feel excitement, panic, loss of self-confidence, etc. Take it from someone who faced the Jeopardy! board at 11. You want to have fun and enjoy the experience? Then have fun and enjoy the experience! Frankly I'm a little jealous your turnaround has been so soon--I got my letter for Wheel back in April and I'm still waiting for the call! Just take a few deep breaths. Slowly count to four on the inhale, hold it for a couple of seconds, then exhale slowly (again counting to four as you do so). Repeat as many times as necessary. Remember--the hard part is over! You beat the odds to get on an American institution. They put you on the show because they have confidence in you to make good television, and a big part of that is because you're a good player! Whatever you win on the show will just be the icing on the cake! More than anything--TAKE YOUR TIME! I know they tell you "you have x number of seconds to make a move" but it's more time than you think it is. Take that extra second to gather yourself and concentrate on the game. Direct the excess energy into spinning the wheel. And no matter what happens, you'll have a story to tell for the rest of your life. Good luck! (And do let us know when your show airs when you're apprised of the airdate!)
