Thanks a Million! Sweepstakes (Day 6)
It's day 6 of Wheel's 20-day "Thanks a Million! Sweepstakes" from one of my favorite seasons, #25! But I'm warning you, the first week was a shutout (credit to Game Show Kingdom). So can this week be better?
Since these 4 weeks had extra episodes, we're on the set of "College Road Trip"! But no, the part where the students introduce themselves and then run to the panel is not here, sorry. I like that part.
Let's get to the action...
Toss-Up 1: What are you doing? (one of their newer categories)
D _ W N L O A D I N G
A / P O D C _ _ T
I wonder if anyone was DOWNLOADING A PODCAST of this episode at the time, but for now, Kyle's on the board first. All three of these students are from California...
Kyle Crechard: A USC junior majoring in accounting who plays in the USC jazz band (he's been playing the trumpet since the 4th grade); he's from Redondo Beach (near L.A.)
Sarah Hughes: A UC Berkeley senior majoring in English who plays the flute for fun; she's from Martinez (near S.F.)
Jessica Bleifer: A UCLA senior ("Finally!", she says) who's the VP of her sorority (Alpha Phi) and a therapist who helps kids with autism (now that's what I'm talking about! ); she's from Santa Clarita (also near L.A.)
Toss-Up 2: TV title
_ M E _ I C _ N
_ _ D
Jessica knows well enough about AMERICAN DAD to spin first.
Featured Prize: Tour of Europe (London; Amsterdam; the Rhine Valley, Germany; Italy; Lucerne, Switzerland; and Paris) provided by Contiki Vacations (this company provides trips for 18-35 YOs); it's worth $7,000
$10,000 Round: Food & drink
Jessica picks up the Buy.com gift tag with 2 R's, but Loses a Turn. Kyle then picks up the Wild Card with a T trio, but can't find an S on $400. Over to Sarah, who finds an H pair on $500, but Bankrupts between $900 and $600 to give back her money. It's right back to Jessica! She cashes in two top dollar N's and the Free Spin plus $300 with 2 G's! After buys 4 I's and 3 E's, she gets a $700 V and buys an A pair before we show you this:
_ A R G E / _ I _ _ A
_ I T _
E V E R _ T _ I N G
_ N / I T
She eats up a LARGE PIZZA WITH EVERYTHING ON IT for $5,550, the gift tag, and the Free Spin, totaling $6,550 cash and shopping that round!
Wrong Letter: S (Kyle)
Bankrupt: Sarah
Lose a Turn: Jessica
Sarah: $0
Jessica: $8,550 cash and spree + FS
Kyle: $1,000 TU money + WC
$25,000 SPIN ID #1: KH04104
Eggland's Best Jackpot Round: Fictional character
Kyle starts this round off with a dud of R on $500. Sarah finds a $600 S, a $300 T, and an H trio for the 25 prize...it's $2,500 cash on the back! But after buying 3 E's, she duds out with P on $300, so goodbye $3,150 (including the 25 prize)? Anyway, Jessica finds 2 L's on the Jackpot (she can't solve it for a $7,200 Jackpot), 2 D's on $300, and 4 O's. Board at this point:
T H E / O L D
_ O _ _ N / _ H O
L _ _ E D / I _
_ / S H O E
This lady knows about THE OLD WOMAN WHO LIVED IN A SHOE, so she's got another $1,350.
Wrong Letters: R (Kyle), P (Sarah)
Unclaimed Jackpot: $7,500
Sarah: $0
Jessica: $9,900 + FS
Kyle: $1,000 + WC
Mystery/Big Money Round: Event (PRIZE PUZZLE)
I'm warning you...this is a short one. (And an obvious letter appeared last.) Sarah instantly picks up the Europe tour with an S! She next lands on $300 and finds 2 N's. After buying 3 A's, she gets another trio - the T's on $900. But then she loses her turn to an L call on $300. Jessica finds an obvious G on the Mystery Wedge between $800 and $300. She's going for it...there's the money! After getting a $700 D and a couple of E's...
A T T E N D _ N G
A / _ _ E S T A
...she'll definitely be ATTENDING A FIESTA big time, because she's won $450, the $10,000 Mystery...and $5,539 trip to MAZATLAN, MEXICO! She's earned $15,989 cash and trip that round alone! Unfortunately, Sarah missed out on $15,589 cash and trips that round due to her error ($400 less than what Jessica just earned).
TRIP SPIN ID: JR03666
Wrong Letter: L (Sarah)
Sarah: $0
Jessica: $25,889 cash, spree, and Mexico + FS
Kyle: $1,000 + WC
Toss-Up #3: Around the house
_ U L _ - _ E N _ _ H
_ _ R R _ _
Jessica nails FULL-LENGTH MIRROR, so she has $111 shy of $29,000!
Round 4: Proper name
Jessica gets a $300 T, but finds a negative of N on $800 and Kyle tries to spin...but whooooooa, Jessica has a Free Spin, and she's using it! Sorry bud. Anyway, she gets a $300 R and 2 A's, but then hits LaT for the 2nd time tonight. NOW it's over to Kyle. He gets $900 from 2 C's and $2,800 from an S quartet. After buying an E trio...
A C T R E S S
_ E S S _ C A / _ _ E _
This would've been nice if Jessica solved this one, but Kyle nails ACTRESS JESSICA BIEL for $3,450. He thought he had finally gotten on the board, but Pat reminded him he already had $1,000 under his belt.
Wrong Letter: N (Jessica, she used her Free Spin)
Lose a Turn: Jessica
Sarah: Not much luck tonight
Jessica: $28,889
Kyle: $4,450 + WC
Round 5: Show biz
Trying to catch up to our big leader, Kyle nabs $10,000 from a T and an S thanks to his wise WC use! But after buying two E's, he buys a critical baddie in I. Sarah gets a $1,200 G pair, but duds out with D on $900. Jessica lights up a $300 N and 3 A's to clear out the vowels...
S T A G E
_ A N A G E _
...and solves STAGE MANAGER for a $950 bonus.
Wrong Letters: I (Kyle), D (Sarah)
Sarah: Terrible shape
Jessica: $29,889
Kyle: $4,450
Either we've got short puzzles or quick solvers - we've got time for a rare Round 6! Let's go! We had a lot of 6-rounders in season 25 (and 27).
Round 6: Thing (also a Song Title)
While you figure out this one-wordy, every consonant is worth $1,600 (just slipped past the big one).
Sarah - 2 S's
Jessica - 1 R
Kyle - 2 T's
Kyle's smiling...
S _ _ _ R S T _ T _ _ _
...because he instantly solves SUPERSTITION for $3,200 and a nice 2nd-place total!
Sarah: $1,000 consolation
Jessica: $29,889 cash and prizes!
Kyle: $7,650
Jessica's score was incorrectly shown as $28,939 but it was corrected before the Bonus Round ($950 was left out).
Maingame Winnings: $38,539
Bankrupt Trash: $1,000 (all from R1)
Bonus Round: Proper name
Jessica's a good player, so I think she can end this 5-episode losing streak (credit to Game Show Kingdom and the Bonus Round Puzzle Compendium. Will she? If she does, she could win some more money, a Jeep Grand Cherokee, or a Toyota Prius.
She brought her parents and lands on the W in WIN.
You've seen this person on "American Idol" (and the L's went from left to right instead of the usual right to left)...
_ _ _ L _
_ _ _ _ L
She goes with HDCA...
_ A _ _ A
A _ D _ L
...thank goodness for those A's! (Pat thought they were the only picks up there, but he corrected himself.) Jessica knows this lady is PAULA ABDUL for the $23,609 Toyota Prius! Her final total: $53,498 cash and prizes!
CAR ID: RM0020857
$25,000 SPIN ID #2: BF0007720
Pat and Vanna discuss hybrid vehicles like the Prius, which Vanna drives. Oh, and they talk about Jessica's stellar performance!
