Wheel Around the World (Day 1)
All right everyone, time for the start of season 23! This season had daily Prize Puzzles (which is why I'm focused on this season) AND winning Spin IDs for BR car wins! Let's see what happens tonight...
Toss-Up 1: Thing
T H _ / G E N U I _ E
_ R T I C L _
Marcus knows about THE GENUINE ARTICLE. Our first players of season 23 are...
Marcus McIntyre: A company foreman who's a newlywed (married to Christy for just a couple of months); he's from Gladstone, MO
Gloria Crease: A retired court reporter (and self-proclaimed "former professional eavesdropper") who likes to travel/go on adventure and even fell off a jet ski and swam from Cancun; she's from Santee, CA (near San Diego)
Julie Elliott: She doesn't mention her occupation but she's been married to Charlie for 14 years with 2 sons and daughters (and they're growing up to be Wheel Watchers, making them LFATs) and she loves photography; she's from West Branch, MI
NOTE: An LFAT (Loyal Friend and True) is a lifetime Wheel Watcher.
Toss-Up 2: Person
S _ R O N _
_ _ _ M M E R
I dunno if Marcus is a STRONG SWIMMER, but he's 2 for 2 so far.
International Trip on the Wheel: Rio De Janiero, Brazil, $5,544
$10,000 Round: Before & after (Wow, THAT early into the season?)
Marcus can't find an S on $400. Gloria then gets a $500 N, an $800 R, and 3 E's. But after finding a $1,200 L pair, she Bankrupts near $900 to give up $2,250. Julie finds a B for $300, a K for $450, and an F for the AmericanAirlines.com gift tag. She next gets an $1,800 X trio and shrieks after slipping past the $10K wedge's left-side Bankrupt and into $500. She lights up the last consonant of Y...
L _ X _ R Y
B O X
O F / K L E E N E X
...and buys herself a LUXURY BOX OF KLEENEX for $3,050 and the gift tag, totaling $4,050.
Wrong Letter: S (Marcus)
Bankrupt: Gloria
Gloria: $0
Julie: $4,050 cash and travel
Marcus: $3,000 Toss-Up money
Ladies and gentlemen...time for a BRAND-NEW CATEGORY!
Centrum Jackpot Round: TV title
Gloria instantly Bankrupts between the Jackpot and $600. Julie picks up the TiVo gift tag with 2 N's (with lifetime service, Pat says; I thought he meant the TV network) and the Free Spin with a semi-obvious G (the screen strangely didn't show her picking it up). She next gets a $300 R and 2 I's, but hits LaT, so she's using her FS. She next gets $1,400 from 2 S's...but then calls a dud of L on top dollar. Darn. Marcus calls the 1st letter of his name (M) on $400, but that's no good either. Back to Gloria, who lights up a $300 D and a $900 T trio (Pat thought there was only one T at first)...
D _ N _ I N G / _ I T _
T _ _ / S T _ R S
...and IDs the hit reality competition series "DANCING WITH THE STARS" for her first $1,200.
Wrong Letters: L (Julie), M (Marcus)
Bankrupt: Gloria
Lose a Turn: Julie, she used her FS
Unclaimed Jackpot: $10,500
Wonder why you didn't go for the H's, Gloria?
Gloria: $1,200
Julie: $4,050
Marcus: $3,000
Mystery Round: Fun & games
The Mystery Prize is a $13,185 Kia Rio.
Julie gets a negative N on $400 to start. Marcus picks up the Wheel Around the World (Brazil) trip with an R and $1,800 with 2 L's, but says S for sorry on $300. Gloria can't find an M on $300. Julie gets an $800 T and buys an O and 3 U's (the last word is TOUR), but then she Bankrupts between $3,500 and $300 to give back $300. Marcus then buys 3 A's, an E, and that I to clean out the vowels. He then gets a $900 F, and next lands on $300...but calls a FATAL DUD in Q. Gloria then gets a $350 G, but then repeats the O. So Julie finishes off on $300 with 3 D's and 2 Y's...
F U L L - D A Y
G U I D E D
_ A Y A _ / T O U R
...and with $1,500, she can experience a FULL-DAY GUIDED KAYAK TOUR on her $6,470 trip to PUERTO RICO. She's earned $7,970 that round, while Marcus has kissed $13,964 cash and trips goodbye due to his error. Rotten luck. IMO, that was a VERY rough round...
Wrong Letters: N (Julie), S (Marcus), M (Gloria), Q (Marcus)
Bankrupt: Julie
Disqualification: Gloria's O repeat
Gloria: $1,200
Julie: $12,040 cash and prizes
Marcus: $3,000
Toss-Up 3: Occupation
A _ _ P U _ C T _ _ I _ T
Gloria is DISQUALIFIED for adding an R to the answer (thus, ACURPUNCTURIST) and Marcus only gets the first 2 syllables, so Julie solves ACUPUNCTURIST (with only one R in the puzzle) for a new total of $15,040.
Round 4: Phrase
It's a $1,300 Final Spin.
Julie - 2 T's
Marcus - 1 semi-obvious H
Gloria - No N
Julie - 1 D (Was she still thinking AND?)
Marcus - 1 L
Gloria - No B.
Julie - 3 R's
Marcus - 1 semi-obvious E
Gloria - 2 F's
_ / F L _ _ R / F _ R
T H E / D R _ _ _ T _ _
How appropriate for Gloria, considering she was a court reporter - she has A FLAIR FOR THE DRAMATIC and another $2,600 to go with it.
Wrong Letters (both from Gloria): N, B
Gloria: $3,800
Julie: $15,040 cash and prizes
Marcus: $3,000
IMO, Marcus really fizzled out after solving the first 2 Toss-Ups.
Maingame Winnings: Just $21,480
Bankrupt Trash: $2,550
Bonus Round: Thing
Julie could either win a BMW Convertible or a Chevrolet Trailblazer.
She brought her parents, Alan and Marilyn, and lands on the B in BONUS.
RSTLNE fill in 1/4 of the puzzle...
_ _ _ _
_ L _ E
GMCO gives her a good shot at this...
_ O O _
G L _ E
...but she's ONE LETTER OFF with GOOD GLUE and FOOD GLUE when the answer was WOOD GLUE. Darn it. And to make matters worse, she loses the Trailblazer. she leaves with $15,040 cash and prizes.
