Pat generally does say the same whenever a contestant solves "only" $6,000 from the three Toss-Ups, and I'd have to agree with that. Plus you don't have to worry about Bankrupt or Lose A Turn, and for that matter, if it's even your turn! I've always been of the opinion that if a player solves all three toss-ups, they should get some kind of a bonus, like an extra $1,000. Wouldn't that be a fun moment?! Someone tell the producers!

Melody I have to agree with you. I've always been a fan of Toss-Up sweeps...and for some strange reason, I always like seeing any woman named Melissa on the show sweeping those Toss-Ups.

Sidebar: I Googled "Wheel of Fortune viewing party ideas" before ours to get some tips from previous contestants, and what was the first result? Melody's Pinterest page on the same topic! Woohoo, you found my board! I can't believe there aren't more resources out there for WoF-themed parties. I found a couple kids' birthday party ideas; apparently kids love Wheel (must be the colors and the spinning). In addition to the drinking game (which was just for funsies, no one really followed it), I made: - A wheel-shaped veggie platter with veggie wedges (this was harder to make than it seemed and didn't turn out that... wheely)
- A wheel-shaped fruit platter (same as above... turned out worse, actually!)
- Minestrone soup with alphabet noodles
- Pasta salad with wagon wheel pasta
- A color wheel cake inspired by my fave DIY blog, Brit + Co!
I was about to print out nametags for everyone, butttttt that was way more cutting paper than I felt like doing

I mean, why else would you enjoying watching women Melissa win toss-ups...? Thought it was for the alliteration of: "Melissa sweeps the toss-ups." (Or maybe that's considered consonance.)

I saw "in the sauna" right away, and my brain's first thought was "roasting in the sauna", so I hit the buzzer. For several obvious reasons, that wasn't the answer (firstly, the letters weren't lining up, and secondly, that's not an actual saying, brain!!!!) Hey, "I'LL BE IN THE SAUNA" isn't a Phrase, but they used it. So from the results of that drinking game, we would've had to take 7 drinks (8 if Kyle was embarrassed. ), 1 yell at the screen, 1 spitting out of the drink, and 1 freakout. Fun stuff. Then comes tape day. I kept telling myself "call him your wonderful fiancé, call him your wonderful fiancé." And sure enough, my brain toys with me again... I'm standing there with Pat and I introduce Kyle as my "lovely" fiancé, which even Pat made fun of me for! All I could think about was Vince high-fiving his bros. Or you could've just, you know, not used an adjective at all. I've always been of the opinion that if a player solves all three toss-ups, they should get some kind of a bonus, like an extra $1,000. Wouldn't that be a fun moment?! Someone tell the producers! Maybe $10,000 for all three instead of just $6,000? How would they execute that, though? They don't usually mention the fact that all three Toss-Ups net you $6,000. Though I do think the idea of a sweep bonus is pretty interesting. I'd probably adopt that rule for my mock games if I used more than one Toss-Up.

Oh, look, the Trip Puzzle has the name of a tropical fruit so the trip's obviously gonna be tropical. Did I mention the puzzle itself kinda sucks? A massive $70,300 cash was swiped from Friedman's wallet tonight, mostly thanks to a $6,000 Speed-Up and a Bonus Round win. Great work! Your optimal Bonus Round strategies for February 27, 2014:* Modern (2014): CPYO(M) -- the M doesn't help as much as the other consonants (hence it gets the Wild Card spot), while O is the only vowel that helps both words. * Classic (1990): BCKA. Pretty rare for me to get some puzzles with a pretty clean-cut set of I'm-sure-you'll-win-with-this picks! Welcome to the forum, Melody, and congratulations on your big win! Yes, among many other..."gems". Harry Friedman and "Phrases people actually say" don't intersect too often, especially where the Trip Puzzle is involved -- given all the bad ones they've used over the past three or so years, I wouldn't have been surprised if "ROASTING IN THE SAUNA" was a puzzle. We had a brief discussion about low-quality Trip Puzzles back in March 2012 (yes, all of those are legit puzzles used on the show; a few more examples are here and here), and I sometimes use [LoudBoomyVoice] IT CAME FROM THE BROCHURE[/LoudAndBoomy] during my posts in recap threads to denote some particularly bad ones.

With the regards to the rest of the episode, man, it was a rush! I actually didn't feel as though it went by in a flash, as many contestants say. If anything, I was eager for it to be over (and I find it hard to watch Wheel now that I've been on... I get small pangs of PTSD). ... Re. DOUBLES PARTNERS, jeremyhoward, I thought two things about your "A" strategy: 1) you didn't know the puzzle and were hoping that a known vowel would help you out (although, in that case, why not call out a vowel that wasn't in PARTNERS, since it's not getting you $ anyway?) or 2) you knew the puzzle and picked a letter you knew wouldn't help me or Kelly in solving the first word, in hopes of it coming back around to you. I was sure you knew the puzzle, and was shocked when it was my turn again. (And visibly shaken when I saw the scoreboard.) Sorry, folks; I didn't get any notifications of replies, so I thought this thread was done! I actually got "WoF fatigue" after sitting in the audience for three shows and then taping one, but I'm now back to watching it on occasion, albeit not with the regularity I had before taping. It's not because I know I'll never be a contestant again, but more because after watching for more than 20 years, you kind of get a huge spoonful of the show in one day that makes you need to take a break. As for DOUBLES PARTNERS, I had no stinking clue what the first word was. The "A" strategy was merely to see if there was one in the first word in hopes of stealing the puzzle. I knew Melody was good at getting the puzzle right after my turn, so I was wary of letting it get back to her out of fear I'd never get a chance at the puzzle again. I still can't believe you've already been to that hotel in Hawaii! I was really hoping for the PINEAPPLE FRUIT BOWL, because we've always wanted to go to Hawaii, but BOWL was just not coming to me. In the end, I was happy with how I did, and I'm loving the new bicycle I bought with some of the winnings.

When do you get your winnings? Just a general question about all contestants.

Contestants receive their winnings 4 months after their airdate. Jeremy should be getting his near the end of June (usually the check comes at the exact 4-month mark give or take a day).

In the end, I was happy with how I did, and I'm loving the new bicycle I bought with some of the winnings. How exciting that you got yourself a new bike! I can't ride one to save my life. Of my hypothetical winnings (because the actual check's still months away) I took my friends and family to dinner on the night of the taping (my first time treating ~7 people to a meal at a restaurant!). Felt pretty nice As for the rest of the cash, in addition to paying the taxes on the Hawaii trip, I'm going to be boring and responsible with it. Honestly, one's better off not winning a trip. Let's say you pay half the value in taxes; for a $7,000 trip, that's $3,500 out of your pocket (for some, that amount is what you have to pay from your own personal money if you didn't win enough net cash from the game!). Don't you think you could put together a nice vacation for two for that same OOP amount? My mom and I went to Waikiki and the entire trip (flights, hotel stay at Outrigger, food, entertainment, everything) cost farrrr less than $3500. Granted, it was ten years ago – I was in high school – and flights to HI from CA are relatively cheap, but still. Winning a trip is essentially winning the opportunity to buy yourself a vacation. Obviously, Kyle and I are THRILLED to go to Waikiki (planning for next January, you know, to escape the cruel Los Angeles winter) and so incredibly grateful to have won it (otherwise, I wouldn't have thought to go there at all), but I believe I'm a strong enough deal hunter that I could have planned the trip for just as much or even less than I'll be paying in taxes! jeremyhoward Definitely consider a trip to Hawaii for you and your wife! You deserve it after all your practicing and Wheel watching and air traffic controlling. If you do go, I recommend Maui or Kauai!

I know they will 1099 you for the value of the trip, but I think there was something in the terms and conditions that said if you can prove the trip was cheaper than the MSRP based on receipts or the like, then you would only have to pay tax on the actual value of the trip instead of the retail price we see on the show.
