No calls of B or Y in Round 2?
A Bonus Round that was possibly easier than it looked. A wild guess of V for the second half might have done it.

Joe, oh my goodness! I go to UIC too! This is my last semester there before I get a Bachelor's in history. I was expecting you to have won more since you were this week's featured player, but I nonetheless congratulate you on your $9300. Still, I have that burning question. Did you not know the Prize Puzzle?
Also, how much do you get from the show after taxes? Just so I have an idea about what to expect for an Illinois player.

No calls of B or Y in Round 2? A Bonus Round that was possibly easier than it looked. A wild guess of V for the second half might have done it. Well we are talking about modern players here. I was sure the 1/2 car was going to be won tonight. It seems the car is being won less this season, and not just the 1/2 car. The BR cars are rarely won either. No word on the 100K this season, which is becoming quite the anomaly. I wonder how long the drought will go on for. Will it last into next season? We had two extremely rare categories tonight, bigger puzzles than usual and some decent winnings all around in the maingame, so that was nice. I would say this episode was slightly above average. Also, does it seem like the bonus puzzles are starting with vowels more frequently now? I wonder if this had anything to do with our friend Emil.

I knew ORDERING and POOLSIDE, but didn't know BEVERAGES. I was hoping to keep spinning and hopefully let it come to me. I literally paused for a few seconds where Pat asked me to Spin or solve, but they edited it out where it looked like I immediately spun. I was afraid of hitting bankrupt again after the first one. The bankrupt spin in round 2 was literally going to be my last spin before solving. I wanted to get above $4k or hit the other half car. They are withholding 7% for California, but I thought I remembered somewhere that Illinois and California have a reciprocity agreement to not tax each other's residents. If true, I'll have to just pay 5% for Illinois at the end of the year. As for Federal, I will most likely not have to pay after writing off my school expenses.

You did great tonight Joe! You probably should've called the G in R3 but all 3 of you did very well! Stacy would've won by a landslide had she not dudded out on the 2nd 1/2-CAR, but can you believe she only needed the Mystery Round (Rome included) to win. Whaddaya plan to do with your winnings?
As for the BR, I had that with the ER in OVER-. Too bad it wasn't solved. Hey, $12,750 + Rome isn't so bad.
My rating: 6
I like when they have College Week from the studio.

Aww, that one more spin that stops you cold! On top of that, if you were able to guess the G in round 3, I'll bet you would have had it at that point. So, the Wheel must have did it to you twice. It's all right. At least you didn't have to pay taxes for any prizes. It's kind of coincidential because I'm also thinking about the gentleman who lost his showcase on TPIR episode 8000 earlier today. He won just under $12,000, $10,100 of which was cash courtesy of Plinko. After taxes, he'll still have a few thousand dollars on him. Had he won those trips, I doubt he would've seen a penny in cash.

Well we are talking about modern players here. Will you withdraw that remark, Mr. ultimaganon? I *am* one of those modern players and I resent your snide comment. (takes deep breath) That being said, Joe, well done to you! Nine grand and change is nothing to sneeze at. I think you were clearly the best player up there, it's just a shame the wheel wasn't too kind to you. You're a quiz bowl player? I played in high school, but that was the end of the line--USC didn't have a team. Any intentions on gunning for Jeopardy! in the future?

My laptop died during the trip to LA so bought a new one. Also going to pay off some of my student loans and might do a summer trip somewhere.
I will plan on going for Jeopardy near. I was technically in the contestant pool when I auditioned for Wheel as I auditioned in May 2012 for the adult shows. I actually recently took the test for the College Championship when I got the email from Wheel.

No, I won't withdraw it, but I will clarify. I mean MOST modern players. You do have a few gems here and there, but on the whole players in the modern era just aren't as good as players prior to 2005-ish. My comment was not directed at ten96lt or you, or any other players who actually have a strategy. What I can't stand is when players stand up there, call letters that have already been called, don't buy vowels, don't spin for more stuff and in general don't use common sense. If that clarification does not suffice, then I don't know what to say. That's my opinion. If you wanted to argue, you should've brought it to a PM.

I too got to watch you in action tonight, Joe, and agree that you just had rotten luck. But you know what, nine grand is a lot better than the pity thousand and you don't have to worry about paying taxes on those sexed-up trips.

Thanks! Ugh my damn phone and auto-correct today. (Jeopardy next*) I would have most likely passed on the PP trip, but Italy would've been nice. Also for those that didn't read the tweets. In case you didn't know, the wheel is equipped with sensors to detect if the wheel moves in any direction besides the normal rotation. During the break after R3, the producers came to me and told me that they were getting reports from the control room that their sensors were detecting me moving the wheel from my bankrupt reactions and asked I try not to pull if I hit it again. Maybe that's what made me memorable.

Great job tonight, Joe. Really great to see two rare categories come up. You do have a few gems here and there, but on the whole players in the modern era just aren't as good as players prior to 2005-ish...That's my opinion. But this is not something that is opinion eligible, there are records and statistics that can prove or disprove this fact - and when you can come up with data that broad brush of "on the whole" will be targeted towards a specific item and this will sound much less snotty. Also, let me know when you get on the show so that I can see how you react under the hot lights.

Now there's something new we learned, the wheel has sensors. Guess that's also how they determine the wheel is, in fact, balanced and not biased to land in a certain section over the rest of it. That thing's a lot more complex than we think it is.
Look at it this way, Joe, hitting Bankrupt is like a Wheel contestant's rite of passage!

Well we are talking about modern players here. Nice work, Joe, shame you didn't get the overall win, but hey, I think you played really solidly, the best of the three, and really just had bankrupt luck, which sucks, but hey. Yours is all cash, and arguably the best deal of all three of you, good work! And yeah, I need to address that quote...it's not just how it's intended, it's how it comes across. Basically you managed to insult, even though it wasn't your remote intention of doing so, me, Josh, Joe, Dan, and Emil, in one sentence. That's pretty spectacular. Sure, we all had strategies of sorts, so we're "exempt", but damn if that wasn't obvious in the least. Sorry our Wheel experience (granted, mine is different, in that it only went as far as audition only, not Culver City) wasn't a few years ago. And this is honestly a horrific time to do so with a BOARDIE not only on-board, but IN THREAD. Not to mention, this seems like a year of a fair share of BAV players, who basically all have been playing extremely solid games of Wheel. To diminish that experience from these members, regardless of intent, is unnecessary. Fuck it, we TRY, them under intense scrutiny, of studio blinding lights, with numbers over TEN MILLION due to watch their show when it airs. We've thought up popular letter picks for the BR, done distribution tables, common buzzwords, puzzle databases. I think we're in better shape, even those non-BAV players, to do well on the show, thanks to stuff like DVRs, which weren't as easily done in the past. I want to know...do you think you could do well at a Wheelmobile? A 2nd audition? How about that 5 minute quiz? Interview on the spot? In front of hundreds of cameras for millions of viewers? If you answered no to any of these questions, you likely aren't in a place to judge. Hell, I've done some big time acting in my day, and that quiz still scared the shit out of me, and I usually LOVE the big stage. You just never know what the effect will be, but usually it involves some portion of your brain resembling something closer to tapioca pudding. Don't get me wrong. I realize your intent is on the whole, and maybe it's the case, maybe not. Irrelevant at large. But it sure didn't come across that way. As a great professor once told me, "There's a time and place for everything! But not now."

Also, let me know when you get on the show so that I can see how you react under the hot lights. It is opinion eligible because we don't have the detailed statistics for every single show that has aired since the premiere. We only have statistics on recent years, so your point is moot. Yeah, I probably would be nervous, but a lot of contestants don't seem prepared at all before they get out on stage. That's what I'm talking about. Why all the hostility? If this is your stand against me having an opinion, then it's a very lousy one. EDIT: Maybe it's my stubbornness, but I still WILL NOT retract my comment. Sorry if you disagree with me, and it was not my intent to offend, and I like watching the modern show, but I'm allowed to have my opinion that the show isn't as good now as it was prior to 2005-ish and that the players don't play as well. And about the pressure Prizes, then why does it appear that there are fewer errors on shows in past seasons than in more recent ones? Those people were under the same pressure, so sorry, I am not buying that argument.

I'm allowed to have my opinion that the show isn't as good now as it was prior to 2005-ish and that the players don't play as well. We never said you weren't allowed to have an opinion. But, like what Jess said earlier, it's more about sharing those opinions in a respectful manner. Please understand that former and prospective contestants DO read these boards, and many people see us as a top source of Wheel information. The last thing we want is for people to think negatively of us, just because of an offensive comment that someone made. And about the pressure Prizes, then why does it appear that there are fewer errors on shows in past seasons than in more recent ones? Those people were under the same pressure, so sorry, I am not buying that argument. They might have been under the same pressure, but that doesn't mean they all handle the pressure the same way. Of course, you'll see people who handle it beautifully. On the other hand, you'll have people who will freak out the instant they get on the stage. Many times, it's a matter of intending to do one thing, but your nerves get the better of you, and something completely different happens instead. It's impossible to get the full picture of what a contestant goes through unless you've been through it before. In the end, it's THEIR game that they're playing. Now, can we please get back on topic?

Allow me to just say my piece on the matter. Thanks. Yeah, I probably would be nervous, but a lot of contestants don't seem prepared at all before they get out on stage. That's what I'm talking about. The thing is that most (it seems) contestants don't research letter frequencies, the best Bonus Round strategies, and the history of the Trip Puzzle like we do -- in fact, I'd wager that some of them aren't/weren't aware that there's places where those things are done. Contestants should be on Wheel to play the game, have fun, perhaps make new friends...and hopefully not give a Nonsense Answer on coast-to-coast television, but that's nerves for you. There's positives and negatives to studying and not studying, both before the auditions and after being selected for the show. And about the pressure Prizes, then why does it appear that there are fewer errors on shows in past seasons than in more recent ones? Those people were under the same pressure, so sorry, I am not buying that argument. While what Ryan said is true, they weren't under the same kind of pressure. Yes, there were lights and cameras and a studio audience and timers for decisions and the fact it was on national television...but that's not what I'm referring to. From about 1975-87, Wheel seemed to be a considerably more carefree and "loose" game in a pretty small and "cozy" studio in beautiful downtown Burbank, which I've likened in the past to a "living room" feel -- "Hey, come on in! We're all friends, playing a silly game of hangman-meets-roulette for some play money to spend on these knick-knacks we found at a Gucci yard sale. " Playing for cash upped the tension a bit, as playing for cash tends to do, but it was still more focused on being fun -- a mindset that continued through the Television City era (daytime retaining more of said feel due to its lower stakes) and well after moving to Culver City. Sure, the prizes were big, but they were always interesting because of their variety. What seems to have happened since about the mid-2000s, and particularly after adding the $1,000,000 prize in 2008, was that the "type" of pressure changed -- what used to be "Hey, it's a silly little game. Don't worry if you make a mistake. " was becoming "Primetime network game show-style atmosphere! Lots of money and prizes on the line! OMGMILLIONBUX! Spoiler-filled promos!" (etc.) more and more. I believe the "type" of pressure put on contestants has changed because the show's own "attitude" has changed. The biggest difference between then and now, and what I think has also contributed heavily to the "new type of pressure", is that social media allows Wheel to dangle so many carrots in front of the contestants -- "Look at all the money and prizes you could win! You could be famous on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, etc.! You might even get to write this week's contestant blog!" Combined with said social media presenting the likelihood that mistakes will be preserved online using titles like "WORST WOF SOLVE EVER!!!"...honestly, it's not really a surprise that players today seem to be more nervous and make more mistakes compared to those who played during the first 30 or so years. (For the record, I'm not insulting or trying to insult anyone who's been on or tried out for the show. I'm merely pointing out why players would be more likely to make mistakes in recent seasons, and how it compares to those who played before the widespread use of social media.)

College Week has been a tradition on Wheel at least since 1986 (and likely earlier due to all of the tape wiping), when it first appeared on daytime for two weeks that year before launching in nightime for Season 6 and has appeared every season since (except for S12, S26, and S30) and with Seasons 14, 15, 20, 23, and 25 having TWO college weeks (With one of S25's a special Road Trip week). It's good to see it again after taking a year off. That said, I like how its back to a more traditional feel in the format's earlier years as opposed to how it was in the late '90s and beyond.
I could tell Joe was definitely "going for it", given the spinning that unfortunately led to those Bankrupts. But at least you had the highest cash total despite finishing third (doesn't happen too often), and you'll have many people to tell about your experience. R2 and R3 were especially fun to watch, as there were 12 non-regular cash amount spaces hit as opposed to just 7 and that was the most exciting part of the show by far. I wish there was at least one TDV hit though. That "Collagen Week" joke was pretty hilarious by Pat, it had me laughing all the way to the end of the credits.
I did get the bonus puzzle with the CDMA, but BGHO could have worked about equally thanks to the first letter. Having just over 60% of the puzzle shows that a skilled puzzle solver should know it, but those with tension shouldn't; too bad Stacy. But tonight was an example that you don't have to have a bonus win or a TDV/MDW hit and still have some entertaining fun.
