I bet this Prize Puzzle in 1997 was probably an experiment at first, and didn't become a permanent feature until September 2003.
Game shows are known to experiment with new features, and do not become regulars until a months or years later.

It definitely was an experiment (either that, or it just plain didn't work), since it wasn't used on November 21 or December 5.
