Whenever someone asks, "who's your favorite game show host?" we often list a bunch of names from the American stable of hosts--Cullen, Rayburn, Trebek, Barker, Kennedy, Sajak...the list goes on.
But what about outside the US? There are loads of international shows we like, but what about the hosts?
I have a few ideas of my own, but I'm curious to hear what you think before I check in.

Ooh, that's a really good question. I had to think long and hard about this. When it comes to English-speaking hosts, Aussie's Tony Barber is one candidate. He has been very enthusiastic with all the game shows he had been hosting.
But when it comes to hosts who did not speak English, I'd have to say that the late, great Mike Bongiorno would be one candidate. Although I can speak very little Italian, I could tell that Mike was very kind toward his contestants. His style always reminded me of how Richard Dawson hosted Feud here in America.
But if I had a favorite international game show host, it would no doubt be Frederic Meisner of Germany's Glücksrad. He had a great voice, some nice hair, and a bright attitude when he hosted Germany's version of Wheel of Fortune. Although German Wheel no longer airs and Meisner's hair color has changed, he still has those three qualities. In fact, despite our language barriers, I'm currently following this fine gentleman on Facebook.

A few that come to mind: * Bruce Forsyth (has hosted a lot of game shows over the years, including the British Card Sharks; also hosted the criminally short-lived Hot Streak here in the States, which ABC stupidly slotted against The Price Is Right and Wheel of Fortune) * Bob Monkhouse (great host, great comedian, pretty much made The Golden Shot into a British hit for five years) * Marco Antonio Regil (host of Mexico's version of Price, and by all indication is a pretty awesome guy) * Silvio Santos (pretty much the game show host in Brazil, who's been doing shows since the 1960s!)

My picks would be Bruce Forsyth, Marco Antonio Regil, and Mike Bongiorno.

Being a Brit myself, and a fan of WWTBAM, I'd say for me it's Chris Tarrant, he was kind towards the contestants, and made the show exciting to watch before they changed the format, which in my opinion, made the show a bit boring.

My least favorite international game show host is Noel Edmonds. He's as gamble-happy as Edd Byrnes was on the Wheel of Fortune pilot at times! See him at his worst here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=d-1pvShYdWQ My favorite is Jimmy Carr. He is the king of comedy when it comes to game shows (yes, definitely topping Drew Carey and Wayne Brady).

Here are my picks, as promised!
--Bob Holness (UK). You could tell he was having so much fun with the teens on Blockbusters; he just came across so warm and sincere that you couldn't help but like him. As someone once put it, "He was the best headmaster you never got." He was so good, he could make even a mediocre format such as Raise the Roof feel exciting.
--Carlos Sobera (Spain). Carlos is to Spain what Regis is to us (and I'm not just saying that because he hosted Spanish Millionaire, among other titles). There's just something about his hosting style that draws you in, and he can punch up "DOSCIENTOS MIL EUROS!" with enough gusto that might even give Regis a run for his money. Don't forget his wacky eyebrow.
--Kiyoshi Kodama (Japan). He's basically Japan's Alex Trebek (mustache and all, at least in his final year or so), hosting Japan's longest-running quiz show (Panel Quiz Attack 25 for 36 years), except with a lot more unique mannerisms. What fascinates me about this guy is that, to me, he epitomizes sophistication--he was an avid reader (also hosting a book review show) and a surprisingly fantastic artist. Some of his art even found its way into the show.
--Marco Antonio Regil (Mexico). I actually had the pleasure of meeting this man a few years ago, and everything that's been said about him being a top-notch guy is absolutely true. Also helps that he is so good at making the contestants the stars. What else do you expect from a guy who's hosted Mexican versions of TPIR, Family Feud, 5th Grader, and Dancing With the Stars?
--Takeshi Kaga (Japan). While he qualifies on the basis of Time Shock 21 (in which his involvement was awesome, but minimal), I have to put him here because of his work on the original Iron Chef. Not many people can play a character based on himself and make it look so campy and so epic at the same time.

Depending on if QI counts as a game show, I'll go with Stephen Fry. I also have to throw a vote in for Jimmy Carr.

He puts a lot of emphasis and he has a great sense of humour. It's impossible not enjoying a show hosted by him. If you look at my first La Ruleta show, I made an alussion to him when I said "la A de ANIMALES!!!" during the Panel con Crono. In that years, he hosted "Atrapa un Millón", the Spanish adaptation of "The Million Dollar Money Drop", and he shouted ANIMALES!!! when one of the categories was this.

Actually, there's something that inspired another question: for those of you from outside the US (primarily lousan92 and millionaireloveruk, I suppose), who are your favorite American hosts?

Actually, there's something that inspired another question: for those of you from outside the US (primarily lousan92 and millionaireloveruk, I suppose), who are your favorite American hosts? I think Steve Harvey hosts "Family Feud" (Or fortunes as it's called here) well, he seems like he can add comedy to the show, and when the contestants call a funny answer he can turn it into a joke without taking it too far. Also, and this is being a wwtbam fan again, Regis Philbin, he was good for the show, and also gave it some funny moments, and made the show a bit more comfortable for the contestants to be a part of, in my opinion.

He's gotten better about this but he still goes up and above far too often for my liking.
