Does anyone have a complete list of categories used on Wheel? I was able to dig up this article from 2008 on Wikipedia... Event(s) What are you doing? Fictional Character(s) Occupation(s) Person People People [Magazine] Proper Name Phrase Quotation Thing(s) Title(s) Before & After Same Name Rhyme Time Foreign Word Foreign Phrase Slang Around the House College Life Fictional Place Fictional Family Food & Drink Fun & Games Headline In the Kitchen Living Things(s) On the Map Proper Name(s) Show Biz Slogan Author & Title | Best Seller Classic TV Family Husband & Wife Movie Title Rock On! Song & Artist Artist & Song Song Lyrics Song Title Star & Role TV Title Blank Clue Fill in the Blank Fill in the Number Next Line Please What are you Making? Who is it? Who Are They? Who Said it? Where Are We? The 20s The 30s The 40s The 50s The 60s The 70s The 80s The 90s Nickname |
... and I wasn't sure if it was missing any. Also does anyone know which categories are still active, and which ones are retired?

Since that list is from 2008, it's obviously missing "Same Letter" and "What's That Song?" "Megaword" is also missing. "Blank" and "Fill in the Blank" are the same thing. Why is "Artist/Song" on there twice? Did they ever occur in different orders? I don't know if it's ever been used on the show, but "Classic Movies" is a category in the Wii, DS, and Facebook games, as well as "Book Title." What’s That Song?Categories in pink are considered rare. * Only used during College Weeks. ** Used once in Season 28 for the show's theme of "recycling" old puzzles. It is unknown if it will show up again under ordinary circumstances. If so, this category variety had the longest "hiatus." [glow=yellow,2,300] POSSIBLY RETIRED:[/glow] Clue Next Line Please People (Magazine) Slogan What are we Making? Where are We? Who are They? Who is It? Who Said It? - I don't think "College Life" appeared during any of the Boston College Weeks last season. Can someone clarify this? We'll have to see if it will appear next time.
- The most recent appearance of a bonus category before "What's That Song?" was introduced was "Where Are We?" in Season 26 (11/28/2008). None of them were used in Season 27. On Pat's former website, he was asked if the bonus categories were retired, but IIRC, he didn't say that it was written in stone that the categories would never be used again.
- The People Magazine category will most likely make a reappearance if the magazine sponsors them again.
[glow=red,2,300] CONFIRMED/MOST LIKELY RETIRED:[/glow] (Fill in the) Blank Fill in the Number Foreign Word Foreign Phrase Megaword Nickname Slang None of these categories have been used in the last 10 years, so I think it's safe to say that they are gone for good.

If I recall correctly, Megaword was only used in the 1994-95 season

Are you sure "Where Are We?" was introduced then? I am sure it's been around much longer than that....
By that, I mean I vaguely remember an episode (when the 97-03 set was still in use) where the category was "Where Are We?" and it had something to do with Memphis because I believe Elvis was mentioned in the puzzle. It was definitely post-2000, but not before 2003.

Well, "The '60s" made a very surprising comeback tonight. I wonder if this means it will be used more often, or if they just revived it for tonight, since they were "recycling" classic puzzles and all. I'll move the decade categories up to the "Possibly Retired" list for now.

The puzzle gives clues involving a certain location. The contestant who solves it earns a bonus if they know the location. This was the last "Where Are We?" puzzle, from November 2008:
BEARS & CUBS THE WINDY CITY PAT'S HOMETOWN

"Show & Song" was a category that was used only once in the mid-1990s and never appeared again. Any idea when this was? Wikipedia had listed Composer/Song and Show/Song, but I don't have any outside verification of either. I haven't seen any mention of Nickname yet. I thought that was unique to season 6, but apparently it was used as early as 1979. Anyone know if it had a consistent presence, or if it was "un-retired" at some point? I've found no trace of it after October 1989. And don't forget that Star/Role began as Person/Fictional Character. I also found one Goen episode that had Person/Title (CANDICE BERGEN IN MURPHY BROWN). And if you want to be REALLY technical, I saw Foreign WordS, plural, used at least once even though they also had Foreign Phrase. ==== Regarding each category's retirement, this is what I've found: * None of the "decade" categories were used after September 2005, except for the one-time return of The 60's in April 2011. * Foreign Word/Foreign Phrase were retired around September 1992. * Slang was retired at the end of season 12. * Clue was retired in September 2005. * Fill In the Blank started out as an incomplete phrase puzzle like Next Line Please. It changed to the "three question marks" kind in late 1994. I've found no trace of the "three question marks" Fill In the Blank after the 2002-2003 season. * Fill In the Number ran from April 1998 to April 2004. * Next Line Please was retired in April 2008. * Slogan was retired February 2008. * What Are You Making? was indeed used only once. * What's That Song? and Rock On! haven't been seen since February, so I say they're retired too. * Where Are We? was retired in September 2008. This was the last "$3,000 bonus" category until What's That Song? * Who Is It? was retired September 2007. * I've found no trace of Who Said It? being used after the 2002-2003 season.

To sort of piggyback on the above post, here are the dates and puzzles I found of the last appearances of some of the retired bonus categories (some of yours might be incorrect, TPH): * Clue: January 18, 2005 - THIS NIGHT VISITOR LEAVES KIDS MONEY FOR MOLARS (Tooth Fairy) * Who Said It?: October 27, 2006 - GRANDMOTHER WHAT BIG TEETH YOU HAVE (Little Red Riding Hood) * What Are WE (not "You") Making?: October 23, 2007 - HERSHEY BAR GRAHAM CRACKER GOOEY ROASTED MARSHMALLOW (S'mores) * Slogan: February 19, 2008 - WHEN YOU'RE HERE YOU'RE FAMILY (Olive Garden) * Next Line Please: April 17, 2008 - HICKORY DICKORY DOCK (The mouse ran up the clock) * Who Is It?: April 23, 2008 - SHE CHANGED CINDERELLA'S PUMPKIN INTO A CARRIAGE (Fairy godmother) * Who Are They?: April 3, 2007 - HBO'S EMMY-WINNING FICTIONAL MOB FAMILY (The Sopranos) * Where Are We?: November 28, 2008 - BEARS & CUBS THE WINDY CITY PAT'S HOMETOWN (Chicago) * Quotation Bonus: May 23, 2005 - I'LL GET YOU MY PRETTY AND YOUR LITTLE DOG TOO (The Wizard of Oz) Of course, this might not be 100% accurate, either.
