Inspired a post of Facebook made by Randy West showing a photo of the Hollywood sign with just the HOLLYW showing, another idea I could consider is if for vowels only, the price of $250 per vowel doesn't apply for all of the same letter, you actually have to pay $250 per letter, even if its the same one. Say if the puzzle is "HOORAY FOR HOLLYWOOD", if you buy for instance an O, one of the O's would appear randomly in the puzzle, however you would have to buy again for the other O's. A contestant has the option to buy multiples of the same vowel simultaneously (E.g. 3 O's would reveal three O's at once, but cost a player $750). However, if a contestant buys more vowels than there are in the puzzle, while the vowels that are present appear the puzzle, the extra vowels would cost a player their turn, while still being charge d the $250 for each vowel that may or not be in the puzzle. After all, in Scrabble, even if you had two of the same letter showing in your display, only one would be used at a time, and in the front game, one of those could be a Stopper and a lost turn, but if one of the two letters was in the word, the first letter would never be a Stopper.
To possibly compensate a little, I'd return the BUY A VOWEL wedge where if you land on it, $250 does allow ALL of that same vowel to appear in the puzzle as is currently the case. If you don't have at least $250, it's a Lose A Turn. When all vowels are gone from the round, the wedge electronically becomes a $1000. The Used Letter Board only goes of after either a vowel is called on the Buy At Vowel space, or a contestant goes "over" by calling a vowel that doesn't appear in the puzzle, even if there were previously vowels on the Puzzleboard from that particular vowel.
This mechanic is done so that players tend to be a bit more wise in vowel buying, somewhat in terms of having just a modest cash amount, and also regarding a certain amount of help, where if there's a word where a vowel is obvious like TH_ or WH_, calling a vowel then could provide a contestant a lucky break with that same vowel in another part of the puzzle if it isn't where they would think it would be. The biggest drawback would be that the game would take longer, which is probably why such an idea wouldn't be supported. But this idea above would be best for a convention or other live event that isn't reliant on a strict schedule.
