My prediction of mass social media outrage in response to the BR puzzle did not come to pass, but at least we got these:

The BR was actually used as a TU2 puzzle 11 1/2 years ago (4/11/2006).

GYPSY would have made a good puzzle in the early-mid 90's. They could have categorized it as Person or Title.

This is one of those times that Pat shouldn't feel nearly as bad - maybe just a tiny bit of guilt. I think about any contestants who'd have had $10,000 or more but then find out the round needs to be thrown out. At least this time (according to the info here), the Wild Card was returned, and the Mystery Wedge was a Bankrupt.
The Free Play moment would have been funny to watch, though we've had weirder. We already had the one contestant from 1/19/2012 hit Free Play 5 times in a row and call 5 free vowels, only to push his "freedom" too far with Lose A Turn two spins later (there's just something about following Free Play with Lose A Turn in the same round).

^There's a reason FP in located between LAT and Bankrupt...

ROCK CLIMBING AND RAPPELLING ...seriously? I don't even know what rappelling means. I've never heard that word in my life. No wonder that puzzle had to be tossed. There are lots of things I've never heard of that have been puzzles. I actually saw a 1996 episode once where every puzzle save for the BR was something I'd never heard of before. Doesn't inherently mean they're obscure. Now that Bruce Springsteen song they picked a couple weeks ago, on the other hand... That was my episode (The one w/the Bruce Springsteen Song 11/9/17) !!! Had I of had the chance to even spin on that one I would have taken every puzzle except the BR and the 1st TU LOL I think she knew what would have happened had I of gotten a turn as well since she solved it for only $1700. Plus Gaylord had $16000 and just guessed a letter that was already up there so that was another reason to solve the puzzle right away.

I remember a prize puzzle phrase a few years ago with the word "jazz" that had I think a mere 35 hits on Google back when it aired. Can't help but feel they just really wanted the word "jazz" in there. I did not think gypsy moth was that obscure, though. I thought it was fairly easy, getting moth quickly, then working backward from moth to get gypsy.

^I've heard of all 3 of those. Those would've been easy BR puzzles.

With the post-spin solve attempt, I'm not surprised she didn't pick the triple instead of the single that also happened to be the first letter on the board... I'm waiting for this scenario of First Letter Syndrome to happen on the show... You just know that if this were the state of this given puzzle, half of your average contestants would call... _ A C _ _ O N M I _ _ I _ _ I P P I
[ON THE MAP]
"J, please!"It turns this scenario with this exact puzzle had already happened on the show, on November 11, 2016, which reran tonight. The S's weren't missing, but the P's were available and of course the player called J before solving.
