What a delightfully weird episode. At least Jonny had a good sense of humor about it, although he looked visibly (and understandably) PISSED after the Prize Puzzle. See, if it were me, I'd've never included that word in the puzzle at all. "Flamenco" is definitely one of those words that is easily mispronounced by non-Spanish speakers--either out of ignorance, carelessness, or incompetence. If you're going to enforce a strict pronunciation rule, why include such words in a puzzle at all where there's a lot on the line? This isn't as egregious as the Seven Swans-a-Swimmin' incident, but...I dunno, maybe I'm overreacting a bit. To be clear: I agree 100% with the way the show ruled. It just really, really puts a damper on the whole experience when something like this happens. Or to avoid controversy, they could’ve done SPANISH DICTIONARY instead. |

Funny you mention the pronunciation of Flamenco, because I am not so sure I would have solved it either with all of the letters up there. I would have said "Fla-men-co", yet it was pronounced as "Fla-mink-o" for the solve. It just dawned on me that I have only seen the word, but have never actually heard it pronounced! So totally agreed that words like that can be problematic.

It is what the internet loves to do; be mad over one small thing screwed up on the show and boom, the contestants gets viral over a bad mistake and now, either you laugh out of this or feel bad and become famous. Probably you'll end up on a talk show or be mentioned. |

I have that episode on tape, and even when I saw it at age 17, I thought the ruling was fair. Makes sense because they are proper names. Plus, there was a precedent of "it has to be pronounced exactly" which had already been established by DOUBLE INDEMNITY and PRISTINELY. Someone on Game Show Forum also said they remember it happening with GLORIA ESTEFAN AND MIAMI SOUND MACHINE but they don't recall the date. |
