Uh... ok.
Robyn was... pretty rocky. I don't think there's much excuse for missing anything on the puzzleboard even if it's at its extreme right or left. She also spewed out complete gibberish in the BR... but since it was about the easiest compound, -BOARD, she managed to win...
Meanwhile...
-BLISS = Pure Paradise themed? Really? Again another near-TS on a forced toss-up. -R1 was a mess. While Pat's Alzhemier's Free Spin was funny, that null cycle was not. Some of the worst editing I've ever seen. -Wheel was oddly loose. Why would it change over the lunch break? -Hawaii two days in a row? Really?
A lot of annoying things in this one, but I suppose it wasn't all bad - 3rd place was at 5 digits, after all.

Well, that was a tight & strange game. Robyn struggled a lot throughout this episode yet still managed to win her BR (I did know the bonus puzzle w/ RSTLNE) & leave w/ nearly $50K in cash & trip.
I can understand her incorrect answer on the first T-U (I would've also gotten it wrong) & being nervous during her interview, but then she repeated a dud in the Jackpot Round that was part of an edited-out null cycle & her vision wasn't quite there late in the S-U Round & it could've cost her the game dearly.

TU1: Never heard of that. Robyn's guess was sensible despite most people saying "DREAMS". Don't see how Cheryl blanked on the last word at that state, though. R1: Pat a had a nostalgia moment there. That's at least the fourth time he's called it that. There was NO EXCUSE for that out of context call, editors! I don't know if they were hoping nobody would notice (way wrong, as several casual viewers did notice and were left confused), but there was a simple task they could have taken the effort to do without having to leave the null intact: take the audio of Pat saying "No S" from the cut S call, then dub that over "It's been called" and dub in a buzzer. :effort: My null cycle guess: Cheryl - Bankrupt on the MDW / Robyn - dud N around $400 / Ryan - dud S (of course) around pink $900 Does that sound right to you, Jerry? How did your viewing party react when Robyn was suddenly told S was called? R2: Wow! That was a super-close call at the end! R3: Have fun in Hawaii, you two! R4: Looks like Robyn failed to notice the blank on the very far right... She's very lucky it didn't cost her, and it was only because of the trip to Hawaii that it didn't. BR: Whew, that was close. Good to see her redeem herself, and you get some extra camera time, Jerry. Jerry, a couple comments for you: 1.) How dare you not cheer for your wife when she hit $3500?! Don't worry. You're still amazing. 2.) You're from Pleasantville? I live near there. You know what you should do? You should call News 12 Westchester so they can do a story on Robyn's appearance. Just today they did a story on a man from White Plains who is a champion on Jeopardy!. A story about Wheel would be a great follow-up, don't you think? Congratulations to the both of you! Robyn seemed very nervous, but she pulled through, as Pat said in the closing. Rating: 6/10

Wheel...we need to talk about effort. Yeah, yeah, I know you're sick of seeing my posts in nearly every recap thread, and you've likely barred me from the studio given my thoughts on Season 28, but I become disappointed at you because I like, know, and understand quality. * The badly-written first Toss-Up: who says FOLLOW YOUR BLISS? A vacation brochure? Last I checked, a vacation brochure isn't a person -- it's something designed to sell trips through using alluring terms. Much like trying to study a foreign language (or English as a second language), the best way to learn how humans actually talk is to go out and observe human interactions. (And by the way, this doesn't mean "stage human interactions where they say contrived phrases so you can use them as defense in using said phrases".) * The most blatant example ever that a null cycle was edited out: really, do you guys look at the episodes before they go out? How could you miss something so obvious as "she called a repeated S, but the round as-aired didn't have an S call before that"? My suggestion: stop editing out null cycles. Simple. * And...oh boy, the Trip Puzzle: it feels inflated and is clearly tropical/beach-oriented. Again. Friedman, I know you're the one who has final authority on puzzles -- you said it yourself to Jason Block in an interview, which meant you admitted responsibility for all the crappy puzzles in the past...what, 5-6 years? I don't know what your process is in approving puzzles for use on-air -- maybe you just gloss over them and approve based on first appearances, maybe you deliberately pick contrived puzzles to troll the fanbase...like I said, I don't know. Assuming you still refuse to have actual prizes in the "Prize" Puzzle, how about this -- bring in about two dozen everyday people (i.e., not from Central Casting) and have them say the puzzles after you put them on the board. If the puzzles sound contrived, discard said puzzles. With that out of the way...unfortunately, Robyn won solely through the guaranteed prize, but at least she managed to avoid the $30,000 or cars (which, IIRC, come out to under $25,000 this week). Your optimal Bonus Round strategies for March 28, 2013:* Modern (2013): CHKA(B) -- the B is to avoid CHALKHOARD, CHALKCORD, CHALKWARD, etc. * Classic (1997): BY[any]A -- for added fun, call the vowel third. In the battle of CDMA versus BGHO (modern only), tonight's winner is CDMA with four letters versus BGHO's three and the "take a third option" FGHI's zero.

Yeah, I was a bit confused when Pat said that the S was already called. Probably a null cycle edited or something. Anyway, I made the same mistake as Robyn did in the speed-up, I have to get my eyes checked. Anyway, pretty good episode because of all 3 players winning over $10k, but more important, thanks to the CDMA call and one word puzzle, I have a BAVGO, dammit!

Okay, this was a weird show...
First of all, I'm not one that can normally notice edits, but the null cycle -> S "repeat" call was one that even I could tell was just way off. Come on, editors, I know "portions of the game not affecting gameplay" get edited, but when a letter called is a repeat of one in a previous null cycle, that clearly affects gameplay!
Anyways, the puzzles themselves...
TU1 was awkward. I was thinking FOLLOW YOUR HEART, with DREAM being a reasonable guess, too... but BLISS was just weird.
R4: Huh, I guess Robyn really did not see that one blank there. I suppose that can happen when your nerves aren't quite together like hers was... At least it worked out for Ryan, and we have a rare game where everyone ends up with at least $10K.
BR: Had it with Robyn's CDMA, which was surprisingly effective today (though BGHO, with _H_L_BO_R_, would probably have worked, too). Meanwhile, I can't say for sure what Robyn's thought process was, but I guess once she got out something with a CH- sound and something that obliquely rhymed with BOARD, the puzzle just filled itself in for her? Whatever the case, good to see her come through.

What's weird is i remember not remembering (if that makes sense) not hearing an S live too. A weird job of editing. Still to this day, I have never heard anyone say "Follow your bliss". As i said yesterday, she certainly had her struggles but won when it counted so that was cool. I went nuts when she won the bonus and all my friends were laughing at my fist pump. Yes, Robyn swears she never saw the "A" but what can you do. Don't love anyone saying my wife "Spewed out complete Gibberish" but that's the internet for you. ha ha Thanks everyone for the (mostly) kind words. As far as news 12 goes, they wrote a few articles on her for the local "Patch" online paper and i hear that she actually was on News 12 but I have Fios so not sure. Where do you live Mario? Robyn grew up in Briarcliffe (I grew up on Long Island) but we moved from the city last summer. Thanks everyone!!

Toss-Ups: Don't worry, Robyn, I would've said FOLLOW YOUR DREAM, too. That first one sounded super-contrived. Also, Robyn did her best with her interview. It really is the hardest part of the whole show. Is it just me, or did Ryan's "Where are you from again, Pat?" sound a little disrespectful? Generally, it is considered bad manners to try to upstage the host. Robyn's fast Toss-Up 3 helped her jump into the lead.
R1: Yucky null cycle edit here. Ryan was able to cash in nicely on the Same Letter, though.
R2: The Wheel did seem rather loose, as Robyn suffers a tough break on the MDW. Way too many close calls here. I'm glad Cheryl got out and won the round when she did! Smart play, although that last word was a toughie.
R3: D for did you really make that your first call (seriously, Jerry, was that really the first call, or was there an edit)? Robyn got some nice spins for a decent cash total and a major dent in Cheryl's lead. Enjoy Hawaii, you two! I loved Robyn's reaction to winning the Prize Puzzle and Pat's deadpan response.
R4: Oh, man! A NEAR-FATAL FLAW by Robyn. I seriously thought she was done after that. To be fair, though, when you're standing at the podium, the board is at an angle towards the red player, so not seeing the A is a perfectly plausible explanation. I would've rewritten the puzzle as...
STRIKING UP A CONVERSATION
Bonus: CDMA actually works very well here, and I had it once Robyn's choices appeared. I have to say, Jerry, that spouting out nonsense actually works, so your wife actually made a good move. Her "CH" sound led her to "CHAL," which led her to "CHALKBOARD" and $35,000!
Overall: A crazy show, but everyone walked away happy (with a little poetic justice for Ryan). When third place has over $11,000, I'd say that's a pretty good day. Robyn had her ups and downs, but she held up very well when it mattered. I just feel that more could have been done, though. Still, Jerry, you and your wife cleaned house! Enjoy your trip to Hawaii with over $40,000 in your bank! 7/10.

I don't see why they can't just use the vacant bottom row more often though, especially if they're expecting to get to R5+.

Well, this was a rather crazy episode...
Tossup #1: That was a mean one by the writers. I was thinking the last word is DREAM.
R1: That was so dead wrong for the writers to edit out even though we knew the S was already called. At least Ryan wisely called the SL on the pink $900.
R2: Boy, Cheryl got lucky that the wheel JUST BARELY hanged onto top dollar in the end!
Retro BR: Seriously, how was that not solved?
R4: Robyn was lucky to have won thanks to the PP round. Leaving out a critical word as she did here was a big no-no.
Bonus Round: Robyn scared me w/ those awful guesses of hers, but thank goodness she got it. And she picked a good time to use the CDMA combo, too.

Well, this was a rather crazy episode... Tossup #1: That was a mean one by the writers. I was thinking the last word is DREAM. Totally. I have never heard of "Follow Your Bliss" other than there. R1: That was so dead wrong for the writers to edit out even though we knew the S was already called. At least Ryan wisely called the SL on the pink $900. Our friends were all up in arms but there was no "S" so didn't matter of course, just a weird edit.R2: Boy, Cheryl got lucky that the wheel JUST BARELY hanged onto top dollar in the end! Retro BR: Seriously, how was that not solved? R4: Robyn was lucky to have won thanks to the PP round. Leaving out a critical word as she did here was a big no-no. She maintains she did not see that letter and have heard others say that in the first spot, that is possible. Bonus Round: Robyn scared me w/ those awful guesses of hers, but thank goodness she got it. And she picked a good time to use the CDMA combo, too. I had 100% confidence she was getting it once I saw her focus as she took her spot on the floor. I do try and work in the word "ChalbGuard" into conversation once a day though! MY EP. Thanks! Yes, it was a quick turnaround. Now, I know it's a different show but I had a very good audition for "Who Wants to be a Millionaire" today and think i have a decent chance of making it. I passed the written test and the first interview and got feedback that I did "great" on the video interview and got all 4 questions there right too so we shall see. Wish me luck!
