But Nicole's right with HAILING A TAXI.
Prize on Wheel: Insight Vacations tour of Normandy, Brittany, and Loire Valley, $9,698
Jackpot Round: Food & Drink
Nicole starts out on the Million Dollar Wedge, but there's no R, unfortunately. Isaac tries N on $300, then buys A before Bankrupt takes away the remainder. Michelle then duds out with T on $700.
Nicole also hits $700 for S. (Note: A non-"null" cycle, consisting of Nicole buying a bad E, followed by a Bankrupt from Isaac and Lose a Turn from Michelle was edited out by mistake, as opposed to the "true null" of Bankrupt-LAT-LAT.) After the non-cycle, she stops at Lose a Turn. Isaac calls L to get the ½ Car next to the orange $300, then buys O. After picking up the France trip with F, he buys U, and picks off the last vowel (I) on Free Play… only for the Bankrupt next to $650 to strike again.
S _ I _ _ _ U F F A L O _ I N _ S
Michelle doesn't spin, instead solving SPICY BUFFALO WINGS for the house minimum.
Aired Dud: T (Michelle) Unaired Dud: E (Nicole) Aired Bankrupts: Isaac ($50), Isaac again ($1,000 + ½ Car tag + France) Unaired Bankrupt: Isaac (loss of turn) Aired Lose a Turn: Nicole Unaired Lose a Turn: Michelle
Left behind in Jackpot: $8,200
Nicole: $2,000 Isaac: $0 Michelle: $2,000 ==== Mystery Round: Before & After (The round begins with a "null" cycle: Isaac calls a dud T on $450, followed by a Bankrupt from Michelle and a bad S from Nicole on $700.)
Isaac calls N on $300, but after buying E, he hits Lose a Turn. Michelle picks up the ½ Car next to the orange $300, then buys O… before the Bankrupt next to $3500 cuts her off.
Nicole picks up the Wild Card with B, and buys A and U. However, the latter isn't up there. Isaac stops on $3500 and finds two H's.
N E _ _ H B O R H O O _ B A R E _ A _
For $7,050, he solves NEIGHBORHOOD BAR EXAM.
Aired Dud: U (Nicole) Unaired Duds: T (Isaac), S (Nicole) Aired Bankrupt: Michelle ($750 + ½ Car tag) Unaired Bankrupt: Michelle (loss of turn) Lose a Turn: Isaac
Nicole: $2,000 Isaac: $7,050 Michelle: $2,000 ==== Prize Puzzle: Song Lyrics
Michelle calls N on $700, but there aren't any. Nicole tries R for $550 before buying E, A, and U… that last one was one vowel too many, as the puzzle has none of those, either.
_ _ E E _ / _ R E A _ _ A R E / _ A _ E / _ _ _ _ _ _
Isaac solves SWEET DREAMS ARE MADE OF THIS. No more money, just a trip to Antigua. (Sandals Grande Antigua, $6,800)

He's all over the place, but not even close to PUDGY CHEEKS for $35,000.

Bobby, see my PM. There were two null cycles tonight, with the first one being an odd choice of turns to cut...

Isaac was a fine player in my book, but unfortunately this week, the BRs have gone the week the powers that be intended it to- in fact, I would've also missed the first word.

I no-lettered TU1 and R4, and had R3 on the first letter.
Mario, thanks for the notes on the nulls. Odd edit in R1 is odd.

I guess the editors failed to pay attention once again. They cut a non-null that had a wrong vowel, but that wrong vowel was followed by an actual null. For those confused, this is how it played out uncut... NICOLE: $700, 2 S's ($1400) NICOLE: No E ($1150) / CUT ISAAC: BANKRUPT ($0 lost) / CUT MICHELLE: LOSE A TURN / CUT NICOLE: LOSE A TURNISAAC: 1/2 CAR, 1 L ($500) Even though there were four straight lost turns, they should have cut the Isaac/Michelle/Nicole cycle of Bankrupt/LAT/LAT, with the dud E being the aired lost turn. Instead, Nicole mysteriously has $250 disappear, and that's why everyone's reaction to the aired LAT is more overwhelming than it seems, and why Pat kept commenting on a huge number of penalty hits. Also, after Michelle got her LAT, Pat said to the audience "Are you glad you came? This is exciting." We all got a laugh out of that before Nicole hit the wedge again... More coming soon, of course.

Shoddy as hell editing tonight.
Can anyone tell me how the hell R4 is SHOW BIZ? Last I checked, a PHRASE is a frickin' PHRASE no matter what.
This week has been pretty poor on the maingame. In particular tonight, truly lost turns galore and Nicole getting way too attached to U. Yes, U-voiding is a thing, but you don't call U unless you're sure anyways (and most U-voiding, it can be deduced there's a U somewhere). It completely cost her the game.
Is it bad I actually got PUDGY but still didn't finish it off?

First two Tossups: Themed, eh?
R1: That was a painful second BANKRUPT for Isaac. Can't blame Michele for solving w/ no money given how badly this round went.
R2: Better round thanks to that good cash in by Isaac, airing-wise.
R3: What's with Nicole's obsession w/ that U after saying that in the last round?
R4: I knew that one quickly like Michele.
Bonus Round: Once again, somebody messes up the second word when it was obvious what it was. Then again, it was not gonna be solved since not many people have that kind of CHEEKS. I had it w/ Isaac's letters.
MY EP. RATING: 6 out of 10

I have no clue why Bankrupts and Lose A Turns are dominating NYC week. Wow. Anyway, 3/10.

The second Toss-Up could've been CALLING A TAXI, since that's what gets taxis to actually pick up customers (especially in New York). Alternately, if Friedman wanted to be a jerk, he could've put FAILING A TAXI instead. Round 1: "Cut out the bad vowel." "But there's an inconsequential null cycle right afterwa-" "WHO'S THE BOSS HERE, CORWIN?!" "...Y...you are, s-sir..." The third Toss-Up was also used on June 9, 1980. Some good one-liners from the contestants tonight, for a refreshing change. In total, $21,550 cash was snatched from Harry's wallet, which is better than the last two shows but still kinda low. Your optimal Bonus Round strategies for May 2, 2013:* Modern (2013): Vowel's obvious, but I'm a bit torn otherwise because there's seven distinct consonants after RSTLNE -- I'll go with PDHU(K) * Classic (N/A): No such puzzles this week, ergo nothing here In the battle of CDMA versus BGHO (modern only), tonight's winner is... CDMA, BGHO, and the "take a third option" FGHI with two letters each! Is it bad I actually got PUDGY but still didn't finish it off? Might want to see a doctor about that; just saying.

You know, I'm not one to normally notice edits, but even I noticed something was wrong when, after Nicole seemingly got 2x$700, that her score displayed after the LaT was $1,150.
And I have no idea why Nicole kept wanting to fish for U's.
As for the BR, I did get it with Isaac's letters. He forgot that there couldn't be an E after DG, or else he might have at least gotten the first word. Still an awkward puzzle, so not sure how much knowing the first word would have helped. (One thing that could have helped is knowing the common consonant pairs that can start a word that don't involve RSTLNE, which are mostly CH, PH, and WH.)

R1: I guessed FRIED CHICKEN WINGS without any letters. At least I got WINGS right. Aww, I was hoping for Nicole to claim that MDW; pity she couldn't. Whoa, that was a lot of penalty hits, and poor Isaac, too. R2: Not sure where Nicole thought the U would go. Now there's a nice round for Isaac! R3: I knew the answer once the E's came up. I would've tried to get some money if I were Isaac, but at least he'll get to enjoy that trip to Antigua! R4: Good job by Michelle on her quick solve. BR: I was able to get CHEEKS with the RSTLNE (I remembered CHEEKBONES being used as a BR puzzle a couple of weeks ago; that might be how I figured out CHEEKS), and PUDGY with Isaac's picks. Pretty much an average episode overall. 5.5/10 from me.

MARIOGS' WHEEL DEAL: PART IVSo the first session is finished and the crowd quickly empties out while the staff and presumably the contestants have a meal break. I was shocked at how long it took. It was about 6:30. I would have thought I'd have time to go back uptown for a while in between sessions, but there was no time at all. I figured it was taking longer than we all thought, so I had already called my mother to come down to MSG since we were going to go to the evening session together. When leaving, we had to go out a side door where several staffers with WOF bags were handing out WOF "blinky pins". We had to go back around the block to the front entrance. It was windy by this time and my sign, being made of foamboard, was flopping everywhere. We go back through the main entrance and we meet my mother waiting there. We bid goodbye to our friends who say they had a great time, and then us remaining to go in with our much better tickets to the next shows. We are among the first in line, and there are chairs for us to sit down on. Eventually, we're filed in and the theatre is pretty much empty of most Wheel staff. No rehearsal games this time since all of the week's players and presumably the standbys played them at the start of the taping day. We get to sit in the front row this time! Well, technically. There was a small section of two or three rows at the very foot of the stage which I believe were reserved for press. One section to the right of us is where the other contestants sit, and behind them, with a gap of a few rows in between, are their guests. Alex would call the appropriate party down before each BR segment. I still had my sign, but I didn't really show it off as much this time, and I thought it looked better further up with all the people surrounding it. Jim soon comes out with the same introductory spiels as before. Again, he has us to do the chant, then is so impressed with how one kid did it that he has him yell it by himself. There were a lot more kids at this taping, likely because school had let out by this time. There were at least a couple more signs, too. One group held up pieces of paper that spelled out "We Vanna". I'm pretty sure that was posted online by Wheel as well. I thought Jim's warmups and audience interactions were more entertaining this session. One young man told him that he had a bet with his girlfriend to see what color dress Vanna would be wearing on the first show, red or blue. A young kid asked if there could be a "Junior Wheel of Fortune" for kids. Jim said they'd put it in the suggestion box, and the audience applauded at that idea (If I were near him, I would have brought up Wheel 2000, but they were way in the back). Another kid asks him how long he's been with the show, and Jim mentions how he replaced Charlie O'Donnell, and asked for a round of applause for him. He points out the used letter board and mentions what they call the "finger board", which tells Pat how many letters there are, which used to be signified by a staffer holding up fingers (Anyone know what is displayed on the screen when the letter is a dud? A zero? An X?). He mentions Sheldon by name and says they usually have him on the set somewhere, but not here in NY, which leads into a discussion about "the room full of fabulous prizes", including a brief name-drop of Chuck. The first show of this session starts, and like before, we're not off to a very good start, and even worse because of a rare MDW dud. Then things take a dive with three penalty hits in a row, which I knew would be cut out (only one of them wasn't. See my earlier post). Things only get worse when Isaac loses the France trip. I thought this puzzle was a bit stingy. In fact, it was used as a Toss-Up in Season 27. Pat and Vanna don't interact with the audience during this show besides the "chest microphone" bit, which I even remember them doing when I first saw a Wheel taping back in 1998. R2 starts with the week's THIRD null cycle! I can't believe I actually got to see three live, let alone one, and that was it. None of the other shows I saw had any. I really didn't notice Nicole's oddball U obsession. Sometimes in the video games when I hit FP early on, I call U, but I never buy it as my first vowel. R3 was a nice quick solve, though, and Isaac knows it's a trip he's getting. R4 also had an impressive solve. I believe I figured it out at that same time. The BR I was stuck on, and Pat's "That was my nickname in high school" joke is really getting old. -_- My mother hated that puzzle (mainly for being "Things"), but I thought it was OK, though pretty difficult, but not the worst, as you will see...
