A post in the recap thread for last night's episode reminded me of a strategy that I have debated in the past and have seen other fans debate as well.
Picture this: Round 3 just finished and you have the highest total. You also have the Million Dollar Wedge. When it comes time for the $3,000 Toss-Up, do you simply not ring in and let someone else win it and start Round 4 to decrease the odds of you losing the MDW to Bankrupt if R4 doesn't begin as a Speed-Up? Or would you feel foolish to do such a thing and take the extra $3,000 if you can and risk getting a pre-bells Bankrupt?
Also, although there is currently not enough evidence to support this, it seems possible that, should a leader with the MDW win TU3, they're intentionally avoiding sounding the Speed-Up bells until after said player's turn is over to ensure one last window of opportunity for the MDW to be Bankrupted.
So do you think this "strategy" is worth letting an additional $3,000 slip away, or is it better to just win the Toss-Up if you can and hope for the best with the Wheel like the rest of the game?

2 situations here:
Playing for fun: Throw the $3,000 Toss-up so you can avoiding spinning as much as possible.
For real: I'd try to win as much as I possibly could. Winning the million is near impossible anyway.

I do this all the time when playing the Wii version as I know that after three turns, the Speed-Up starts. If the turn somehow makes it to me and I somehow know it, I'll solve it. I can't remember any time where I deliberately sacrificed my turn to keep the Million in play. If I were to spin, I know the Wheel can spin so quickly it could land on just about anything, including the two Banrkupts. I had it happen a couple times where I started Round 4 with a Bankrupt while having the Million Dollar wedge in possession. I can't remember offhand, but one of those times may have resulted in me winning $100,000 in the Bonus Round.
If I was on the show, however, I'd go for the $3000. The Wheel doesn't spin as quickly as the one on the Wii version. If you know your strength enough to the point where you figure you can land near the middle of the huge $5000-pink $600 (formerly $900) section, you may be fine.

1. Ring in and win the Toss-Up. 2. Throw my turn by a no-letter missolve. 3. I get to go to the Bonus Round (barring $6,000 Final Spin) with the MDW and an extra $3,000. If I do not make it to the BR then I still have the extra $3,000.
If no-letter solving is NOT allowed, then I would take the $3K and spin, since winning the million probably won't happen anyway.

^Good question...
I'd assume it is allowed but I'm not sure...is no-lettering a puzzle allowed?

I don't see why it wouldn't be. I mean, most of the WOF video games give you the option on the first turn.
Now, being able to ring in on a Toss-Up with no letters... that's something I wonder about.

^I don't think that's "technically" possible since the puzzle is activated when Vanna starts the puzzle.

Actually on the XBOX game you can't no-letter a puzzle on your first turn. Unless someone else loses theirs.

Plus, all three contestants test their buzzers before the camera starts rolling, so for all we know, they could be active before Pat and Vanna even make their entrance.

I would think it's fairly easy with spin power to avoid Bankrupts in round 4+ (Given there is one fewer Bankrupt wedge to worry about) rather than seriously consider throwing the 3k toss-up, but whose who have played would know better than I would.
On a related note, I would not be heartbroken at all to lose the $2k toss-up. I'd rather start round 2 or 3 vs. 1. I'd love to see how many big winners of the day started round 1 vs. 2 or 3.

There are two full Bankrupts on the Wheel in all rounds, which has been the case since 2009. If you're referring to the fact that the MDW is off the Wheel, it would be out of the way anyway since it would have been picked up earlier in this scenario.

This is when I bring up this question: Could you intentionally stall so that you get buzzed after you won a toss-up? That way, you wouldn't have to touch the wheel or anything.

This is when I bring up this question: Could you intentionally stall so that you get buzzed after you won a toss-up? That way, you wouldn't have to touch the wheel or anything. This would be the closest idea I've read so far to my personal strategy, given it adds the $3K to your bank, thus increasing those win odds, but also helping avoid a Bankrupt. If I'm in that scenario? Solve the $3K, presumably, for purposes of discussion, stall a touch, then say you'll solve, which is something along the lines of noting your strategy: "I'D LIKE TO KEEP MY MILLION DOLLAR WEDGE" in the vein of an actual solve, with its drawing out of words. Thus you further delay given both your own delay and that of the solve attempt, increasing the odds of a Speed-Up the next spin if it feels the game is close to it. The real risk you run, of course, is if the puzzles have gone by fast, and there's a good chance of R5 and beyond. If that's the case, I still do the above strat, but if it gets back around to me in any non-SU, assuming I can't calculate my spin power that fast, I'm either instasolving or giving a varient of the same fake solution.

I don't disagree with this method, but I'm wondering how the show/Sony would react to it happening. I'm sure there's no rule against deliberately giving a wrong answer, but I get the feeling they'd suspect something was up if you said stuff like "I'M USING A FORMAT LOOPHOLE TO KEEP THIS MILLION-DOLLAR WEDGE". Of course, if they did suspect something and you've got a five-figure lead, they could always just wait until $5,000 gets within Pat's spinning distance before sounding the bells.

I'd just politely say "I'll pass, thank you" and if there's any confusion as to whether I'm allowed to do that, point out I can just wait until I'm buzzed out for taking too long to take an action.
Of course, that's if I were inclined to actually do that. There's only about a 4% chance of hitting the top prize on the bonus wheel anyway. And correct me if I'm wrong, but the Million Dollar Wedge has been part of the show close to 9 years now and we have yet to see a contestant claim the wedge with a solve, lose it to a bankrupt later, and then go on to win the $100K?

In 2012, someone won the $100K after losing the MDW to Bankrupt in the same round they picked it up. Similarly, in 2008, a team lost the round in which they picked up the wedge, then won the $100K. But otherwise, you are correct; we have yet to see anyone win the $100K after Bankrupting a claimed MDW.

Yeah, I believe that'd be a harder thing to fathom because out of all the things you have to do to win the Million, avoiding Bankrupts for the rest of the game is probably the easiest in my opinion. I hope such a frustrating thing like that doesn't happen on the show. That goes back to why I sometimes sacrifice the $3000 Toss-Up on the Wii and 2012 PS3 version (the 2009 PS3 version is one where I generally know my strength).

Remember: if you lose the game, the MDW is useless anyway. The $3,000 from TU3 still counts towards your score, which either puts you closer to the lead or puts the lead that much farther out of reach.
I think you're all reading way too much into the way Wheel runs things.
