How long has Wheel done the weekend reruns? We started getting them in season 4.

Since Season 2. Not all markets were on board with it from the start, though. New York's WABC didn't pick it up until around 1999. I believe every market carries it by now, though some air it on sister stations instead of the main station. For example, in Atlanta, Wheel airs on weekdays on NBC affiliate WXIA, but it airs on MyNetworkTV affiliate WATL on Saturdays.

I do remember seeing the AN AMERICAN SUCCESS STORY episode on a weekend repeat, either in 87 or 88.

I believe every market carries it by now, though some air it on sister stations instead of the main station. For example, in Atlanta, Wheel airs on weekdays on NBC affiliate WXIA, but it airs on MyNetworkTV affiliate WATL on Saturdays. WPVI didn't start airing it until the early 2000s in Philly, and did so in late night time slots. WPVI in Philly were committed to two locally produced shows on Saturday night in the 80s and 90s, Prime Time and Visions. WPXI in Pittsburgh started airing weekend WOF and J! in the 1987-88 season, which is the season WPXI got the shows when they moved over from KDKA, who IIRC did not air the weekend reruns. WCBS aired the nighttime WOF in NYC from 1/2/84-8/31/1990(they picked it up at midseason), I don't remember if they aired the weekend reruns or not. |

It would have probably aired on a weekend run in the 1987-88 if your local station carried it. That puzzle, for those who don't know, led to a then record one round win of $44,300, which was broken in Fall 1994 with James Madison Wisconsin with $45K on a speed up round. $54K is the current one round record win, hit two or three times in the 21st century. The American Success Story winner won two cars in the maingame and a car in round two via the Special Prize(still in the shopping era), but did not win the bonus for a $17K piece of jewelry. The total of $59,013 was the maingame record for quite some time. |

As a little kid, I was always lamenting, "Why can't they show Wheel of Fortune on Saturday?" since it was part of my routine most of the week. Around the late 90's, I would always tune into WABC anyway around 7:00 just to see if they ever would show Wheel or Jeopardy! Lo and behold, one day I actually saw Jeopardy! playing on my TV on a Saturday, naturally meaning Wheel would follow, and I was so excited about it that I ran and told my parents, to which they dumbfoundedly responded, "On a Saturday?"
I can't remember whether WABC picked up Saturday Wheel in the '98-'99 or '99-'00 season. The only things I remember about the first one I saw was that they were not yet adding $1,000 to the Final Spin on the reruns and the yellow contestant was a man with long, brown hair named Robert. In recent years, since Saturday Wheel is very prone to getting pre-empted by sports or local specials, WABC will often move it to early Saturday or Sunday morning around 4:00 AM, or on rare occasion, Sunday afternoon. Saturday Jeopardy! has it worse since the 6:00 news often gets delayed to 7:00 during football season.
What's funny is that many people are still unaware that Wheel and Jeopardy! do indeed air on Saturdays even though nearly every station airs it on Saturdays at their regular times by now. On my latest birthday, which fell on a Saturday, we had a family dinner at a restaurant and we were seated right below two TV's, and it was just before 7:00. I asked a server to change one of the TV's to channel 7. When he asked what for, I sheepishly told him, "Jeopardy! and Wheel of Fortune", to which he replied, "Those are on on Saturday? Are you sure?".
The only markets I'm aware of that regularly air Weekend Wheel on Sunday instead of Saturday are Baltimore (on a CW affiliate since WBFF/FOX has its animated block at that time, but I believe through last season, it did air on FOX on Saturdays) and Newfoundland, Canada (where Wheel airs weekdays at 3:30 Eastern and Sundays at 4:00 Eastern).
Interestingly, in the Terre Haute, Indiana market, WTWO switches Wheel and Jeopardy! on Saturdays. On weekdays, Wheel is at 7:00 and J! is at 7:30, but on Saturdays, it's the other way around. |

Wheel (and Jeopardy!) introduced me as a young child the concept of reruns. When I was just a preschooler (1989-90 season), I clearly remember the differences of that the Saturday rerun would have the theme/set from the previous season, as opposed to the then-new smooth jazz theme and chevron backdrops during the week, and then a season later, the lights not being dimmed for Final Jeopardy! on the weekend. It's been on at least since 1989 in Baltimore where I first watched Wheel, though since the move to FOX, the weekend feed has gotten a lot more erratic in its airing.
DC has been doing the weekend feed for 32 years, including (see other thread) back when Jeopardy! with Wheel were played on separate stations (Wheel of WDVM/WUSA, J! on WJLA) in the late '80s. Weekend Wheel first appeared in WDVM on January 4, 1986 after football season ended (with some local TV listings showing "To Be Announced" for its debut). From 1986-1989, WUSA only aired Wheel outside of football season on Saturdays, which would air Redskins Sidelines instead. Weekend J! first appeared in September 1986 on WJLA. In September 1990, just like the weekly version, the Saturday feed moved over to WJLA, airing Wheel first and J! second at 7:00, just like during the week and continues to do so today. But of course, during college football season, there have been many occurrences when long games have resulted in partial or cancelled showings.

Did some more research of all Wheel affiliates in the past several weeks and I have some more trivia regarding stations that don't follow the common scheduling of airing the weekend run on Saturdays in the same time slot as the weekday shows. The following markets air Wheel's weekend run on different stations than the weekday run. Baltimore airs it on Sundays and the rest air it on Saturdays, all of them at the same time as on weekdays. For the 2020-21 season, Lima has finally acquired Weekend Wheel and J!, but it won't be on their weekday affiliate. WLIO's sister station, CBS affiliate WOHL-CD2, will air Wheel of Fortune on Sunday evenings at 6:00 PM Eastern, so long as that time slot is available. If 6:00 PM is taken by a sporting event, which it is this coming Sunday, Wheel moves to 11:30 AM Sunday morning. This now makes five markets that regularly air Wheel on a different station on weekends.
With that update, I updated all the quirks about Weekend Wheel airings below, as of the 2020-21 season.
The following markets air Wheel's weekend run on different stations than the weekday run. Baltimore and Lima air it on Sundays and the rest air it on Saturdays at the same time as on weekdays. All station pairs are co-owned. NIELSEN

I remember when I was a kid, Wheel's Saturday night rerun aired Sunday morning around 1 or 1:30 am, which I was on rare occasions able to stay up to watch, otherwise I recorded it, but I never realized they were reruns until after the puzzleboard change of 1997 because of course the few months after they changed to the touch screen board Saturday nights Vanna would be back to turning letters on the old board. A couple of years after that the Saturday reruns moved to the normal weekday time slot of 6:30pm. Jeopardy and Wheel don't air back to back in my area, or on the same channel for that matter, Jeopardy airs at 3:30pm (always has to my knowledge) on our CBS affiliate and Wheel airs at 6:30pm (again always has as far as I know) on our NBC affiliate. Jeopardy's Saturday rerun airs at 1:36am Sunday morning currently. Wow! I sure can ramble!   |

Although some, like WLS in Chicago, do pair J! and Wheel at 6:00 and 6:30 if they don't have a 6:00 news on Saturdays. Jonesboro, Arkansas, which has Wheel and J! on separate co-owned stations, actually has them both air at 6:30 on Saturdays opposite each other. The reason WCBD in Charleston bumps Wheel to late Sunday nights is because they have a 7:00 newscast only on Saturdays. J! remains at 7:30 following it.
