As much focus as there is on the contemporary episodes having bad/awkward/difficult puzzle writing, what are some examples you can think of regarding "bad" puzzles on older episodes? Here are a few of my picks MaingameCHILDREN'S LULLABY (1987 episode; as opposed to who else's?) MAY I HAVE A RECEIPT PLEASE (1987 episode) DRUGS MOST COMMONLY DISPENSED BY DOCTORS (1988 episode) MEXICAN CHIHUAHUA (1989 episode... again, as opposed to what other kind?) HE ARRIVED INCOGNITO (1989) Y CHROMOSOME (October 1989; how are you supposed to know if it's X or Y?) DESE DEM AND DOSE GUYS (1989 episode... this one speaks for itself) GIMME A BUZZ (1989; 14 turns before anyone found a letter, which was even worse than OXIDIZED!) COUNTRY WITH THE MOST PSYCHIATRISTS (1991; seriously, who's gonna know this?) LET ME TELL YOU ABOUT MY GRANDKIDS (1992) BAKE A BATCH OF BUTTERSCOTCH COOKIES (1992) EXTREMELY UNINTERESTING PERSON (1994: was a Clue with the accepted answer of "bore", but how many possible synonyms would they have taken?) THERE'S BEEN SOME HANKY-PANKY GOING ON (1994) ERIC CLAPTON ROD STEWART JETHRO TULL (1994; sure, let's just list three totally random musical acts who aren't even in the same genre) SHE PRIDES HERSELF ON HER COOKING (1994) OFF THE BEAM (1995; 139 results on Google) ME TARZAN YOU JANE FONDA (1996; sure, let's base a Before & After on a quotation that never really existed. What's next, BEAM ME UP SCOTTY MCCREERY?) POODLE SKIRTS PENNY LOAFERS ELVIS DRAFTED (1996) Bonus RoundMENTAL TELEPATHY (early Season 2 episode; as opposed to what other kind of telepathy?) CARMEL CALIFORNIA (early Season 2 episode; it's actually Carmel-by-the-Sea) TWO IF BY SEA (early Season 6 episode before the change to RSTLNE; this one would be nearly impossibly even under current rules) GARLIC BREATH (season 6 episode) QUIZ SHOW (sometime in Season 6; this was back when I first got GSN so I don't recall the exact airdate)

OZ DOG (Clue).
If they did that in ~2002, it would have been "DOROTHY'S FAITHFUL CANINE COMPANION".

RICE PASTA & BEANS (Clue)
If this was 2000, it would be RICE PASTA & BEANS ARE TYPES OF THESE. The actual puzzle just seems incomplete.
I also agree that OZ DOG was pretty terrible. Literally NONE of RSTLNE make the puzzle and only 3 consonants are in the puzzle. DOROTHY’S FAITHFUL CANINE COMPANION would’ve made a better puzzle.

MAY I HAVE A RECEIPT PLEASE (1987 episode) I bet this will be used again during a future Shopping Spree week.

Some of the early Clue puzzles do seem like they were incomplete. As I only have the answer from an alt.tv.game-shows recap, I wonder what the ruling was on EXTREMELY UNINTERESTING PERSON?

A Clue of TO FETCH HER POOR DOG A BONE from Season 10. The dog, or her? Apparently her (the answer was "Old Mother Hubbard"). Then again, the team that solved it got it correct, so maybe it's just me.

Can I say "Megaword as a whole"? Because good lord, that thing was a trainwreck - how it lasted 6½ months is beyond me.

BASKETS OF YUMMY GOODIES (1997)
BONUS PUZZLES
BABY CRIB (1997 and at least one other use; again, as opposed to what other kind?)

BASKETS OF YUMMY GOODIES (1997) Sounds like a bonus puzzle we'd see today.

BABY CRIB (1997 and at least one other use; again, as opposed to what other kind?) Ever played cribbage or dealt with cryptography? Granted, those are somewhat more obscure meanings...

Add these Season 6 ones to the list:
THE MARDI GRAS IN NEW ORLEANS (why begin it with "the"?)
WILLIAM TELL-OVERTURE (where did that hyphen come from?)
GRASP THE SITUATION

They would totally add an ING to that today for a WAYD?

I can tell you one of the worst ones I've come across. It was on a Teen Week episode in the Fall of 1992 and the puzzle in question was "TWO STATES THAT START WITH THE LETTER V", I believe. And the letter "V" was the only letter missing and it took them FOREVER to find it. Needless to say, I had to fast forward to the end of the puzzle until it was solved. Lol.

At least a puzzle from last October (DAYS THAT BEGIN WITH THE LETTER S) was more tolerable.

Not really. It shows they're running out of ideas for stretching out the puzzles to fit themes. How many derivatives of SATURDAY AND SUNDAY have we seen now, all on Weekend Getaways or similar themes?
Half the puzzles in this thread are still better than most puzzles today that are written solely to be themed.

THE MARDI GRAS IN NEW ORLEANS
Why is there a "the" at the beginning?
