As most of you know, the wheel's automation has been done away with since 1997. But there have no doubt been questions about the automation. For examples:
How was the wheel's automation controlled?
Why was it retired?
Is the automation still intact, but not being used?
Those are possible questions regarding the automation

The automation was most likely controlled from backstage by turning the wheel's motor on and off.
It was discontinued per Pat's request, because the automatic spinning showed that the wheel could be controlled by someone other than the contestants. Pat and the staff didn't want viewers to think anything scandalous was going on.

But is the automation turned on when Pat gives the final spin to start the speed-up round? Is this one of the reasons why we never see Pat spin a Bankrupt or Free Play or Lose A Turn on the final spin anymore, and is that one of the reasons why Pat usually spins the $5,000 space on the final spin (if Round 4 starts with the final spin)?

Of course not. The show would get into some serious trouble with S&P if they did that. Pat spins $5,000 often because at the start of Round 4, the wheel is set so that Pat's average spin strength reaches that area. He does spin Bankrupt, Lose a Turn, and Free Play every once in a while. They just edit it out now. Look closely during the wide shot as he spins. You might notice a non-cash space approaching the red flipper, then it will be in a completely different area when it cuts to the overhead shot.

I wonder if that really pointless "Final Spin" graphic also helps to mask any possible edits...

Ok. Although the motor stop working, the wheel won't stop instance but slowing down, so there' no reason it's rigged

The wheel doesn't even have the motor inside anymore. When the got rid of the automation, they also got rid of anything that made it possible.
The "Final Spin" graphic doesn't mask any editing, contrary to common belief. You can see the cut when the camera changes angles during the spin. I'll show an example the next time it happens.
