I'm surprised nobody recapped this gem of an episode. But I'll do it anyway.
Theme: Fast Cars (Day 2)
This premiere week has gone very well! On the previous episode, Cecelia finished with $15,800 in cash while Karen won even bigger with $59,900 (Karen also won an Audi in the Bonus Round)! For the full play of that episode, click here.
Now, how much in winnings will the episode have? We will start with....a tossup.
I kid you not, this week features a new type of puzzle called a Tossup. Basically, a short puzzle is revealed and Vanna will touch the rightmost letter in the puzzle. After that, random letters pop up in the puzzle once at a time. The players have a signaling device for this type of puzzle. If one of them know it, the player must ring in with the correct answer. If the person provides the correct answer, he gets $1,000 and control of the wheel. If he rings in but doesn't provide the correct answer, the person is locked out of the tossup. Simple enough, right?
Tossup 1: Rhyme Time

Eric tries to SEAL THE DEAL with the $1,000...he's right. Tuesday's panel consists of...
Eric Scrillia: From San Diego California. Graduate student studying Biology at San Diego State (mainly the evolution of Earth). Used to work as a clown back in high school and college.
Earl Hardaway: From Memphis Tennesee. Married with 2 daughters. A nurse. Fan of any fantasy sports stuff (and yes, that includes Golf of all things).
Mary Beth Murphy: From West Hartford, Connecticut. Insurance Agent (family-run business). Also married and has twins.
Also, starting this week, we've upped our top dollar to $2,500 for the first round! No more $1,000 space anymore! Also, there's the WINGSPAN gift tag if anyone's interested in that.
Round 1: Thing

Eric gets a $300 T, a $400 S, buys an A, but the L on $500 means a loss.
Earl gets an H on $550, picks up the WINGSPAN with an M, but buys a bad E.
Mary Beth gets a G on $700, buys 2 I's to clear out the vowels and gets an N pair on $300.
M I _ N I G H T

This would have been FOOD & DRINK today, but Mary Beth grabs a MIDNIGHT SNACK nonetheless for $1,050.
Pre-Round 2 Scores:
Earl: He'll spin next.
Mary Beth: $1,050
Eric: $1,000 Tossup Money
Round 1 Events:
Duds of L from Eric ($450 unclaimed) and E from Earl ($1,300 cash and WINGSPAN unclaimed).
If it makes you happy, we've upped the top dollar value to $3,500 for Round 2! Not only that, but we've also moved the JACKPOT (sponsored by Lean Pockets) to this round as well!
We've also added this prize to the wheel: It's a pair of EV Bikes (labeled EV BIKES) worth $2,788!

Earl will start this humongous puzzle off with 4 T's and 2 H's on $600. He then buys 2 E's, 4 I's, gets an S on same space, 2 F's on $3,500, buys 3 O's, gets 2 N's on $600, and an M on the JACKPOT! Here's what the puzzle reads.
I T / F I T S / I N ($10,900)
T H E / _ _ _ M / O F

I T / O _ E _
Set off those fireworks for the first time this season Mr. Corwin! Eric nails IT FITS IN THE PALM OF YOUR HAND IT OVER for an all-cash total of $22,550 this round (includes the $10,900 pot)! MAJOR PERFECTION!
Pre-Round 3 Scores:
Earl: $22,550
Mary Beth: $1,050
Eric: $1,000 Tossup Money
Round 2 Events:
JACKPOT win from Earl (first such win this season)!
No, we did not introduce a new top dollar value for the third round. However, the famous Oreo wedge will be present in Round 3!
We'll also give away this prize: A trip to the Skip Barber Racing School (labeled FAST CARS) worth $4,200!
$10,000 Round: Place

Hoping to close that huge gap, Mary Beth gets a $3,500 N (barely any audience reaction to that hit), buys an E, gets a T pair on $500, but buys a dud A.
Eric gets a $600 S, a $300 G, buys 3 I's, but craps out with an R on $800.
Earl picks up the FAST CARS package with an L (again, no audience reaction to that hit), but calls a bad M on $450.
Mary Beth gets a $300 H but hits a LOSE A TURN (also the first penalty wedge hit of the game).
Eric gets a $450 W, buys an O, gets a D on $600, a B on $600, and buys the twin U's to clear out the vowel shop. He will spin once more...and hits the caramel section of the $10,000 Oreo wedge! He calls two C's to fill in the entire board...

...and reads off WHITE STUCCO BUILDING for all of his money ($11,800 to be exact)!
Pre-Tossup 2 Scores:
Earl: $22,550
Mary Beth: $1,050
Eric: $12,800
Round 3 Events:
Duds of A from Mary Beth, R from Eric, and M from Earl (FAST CARS package unclaimed).
LOSE A TURN hit from Mary Beth ($4,300 unclaimed).
We will start Round 4...never mind. We have another tossup puzzle to do before that!
Tossup 2: Thing (again)

Again, this would be a LIVING THING today, but Mary Beth gets the right answer of PET CANARY at the last second. As usual, the $5,000 space is present for the fourth round.

Mary Beth gets a $400 N, an S triple on the other $400, and a $600 R.

(Final Spin Bells Ring)
With all the winning going around, this episode eventually has to end soon. Pat will spin the wheel...and Eric will not like this - the remaining consonants are worth $6,000 apiece ($5,000 + $1,000)!
Mary Beth: No T
Eric: 3 L's
L _ S / _ N _ _ L _ S

For $18,000 and the upset win, Eric IDs the LOS ANGELES LAKERS!
End totals:

Eric: $30,800

LOSE A TURN Hits: Just 1
Duds: 6

Unclaimed Items: $12,450 (Cash + WINGSPAN + FAST CARS)

Over $55,000 in cash given away so far this episode. If you tell me that this episode is not a good one, you're lying.
BONUS ROUND:
Karen won an Audi in the Bonus Round yesterday, so that's out of the picture. Here's the other stuff that Eric could win:
Mustang Convertible (over $23,000)
Porsche Boxster (over $49,000)
Volvo C70 CV convertible (over $47,000)
$25,000 CASH
W H E E L
Eric selects the first E and has to face this puzzle...

This would be under WHAT ARE YOU WEARING? if this was today, but after guessing BRITHAL PATCH and BATCH, he then gets WATCH, but not a DIGITAL WATCH for the Mustang Convertible. However, $30,800 in cash is mighty impressive back in 2000!
Closing Chat: The new money amounts on the wheel (Y'know, the top dollar format that we see today on the modern Wheel of Fortune?).
