Getting close to the end of the first Big Money Week! Here is my first of two recaps today.
Category: Thing
_ H A _ I / _ A N _ S
Pat continues his streak of bad luck at solving Preview Puzzles by calling SHERRY MANNIS (whoever that is) when the puzzle is actually KHAKI PANTS.
Carmel Roby is from Santa Monica, California. She works at a children’s center and has a 6-year-old daughter. She loves to read, going to the theater, singing and winning. If she wins, she tells Pat she might sing.
James Wall is from Everett, Washington. He’s a firefighter up there, and is also married with a newborn son. In his spare time he goes rock climbing and also has a very large baseball cap collection. His favorite cap is a 1929 Boston Red Sox cap.
Meg Banta is from San Diego, California. She teaches communications at Palomar College in San Marcos, and is also in radio broadcasting and is in the process of starting her own production company. She is married with one daughter.
The Puzzler Round is in round one tonight, which means the lucky winner could add $3,000 more to their total.

Carmel gives the wheel the first spin of the night, as she drew #1, and starts off by finding two T’s on $300. She then gets $600 off of a solitary H before buying two E’s. She triples her $800 haul thanks to three F’s, then buys an O. But Carmel’s streak comes to an abrupt end when she lands on BANKRUPT, losing $3,100.

O F / _ _ F E
James’s first spin nets him $350 thanks to a single S, followed by $450 on a C. He spins one final time and lands on $600, which he’s able to pick up thanks to the final consonant in the puzzle, an L.
T H E / F _ C T S
O F / L _ F E
With only vowels left, James solves THE FACTS OF LIFE, earning him $1,400. But he could turn that into $4,400 if he can solve the Puzzler.

James is stumped and is unable to solve BLAIR before time expires. He tells Pat that he had a crush on Blair, one of the characters on The Facts of Life, then admits he wasn’t being truthful when Pat questions him further. The host expresses regret that he didn’t just play along.
Carmel - $0
James - $1,400
Meg - $0
Charlie isn’t expressing regret about the new prize being added to the wheel, which is a collection of Dorling Kindersley books and CDs. Along with the books comes a Hewlett Packard HP Pavilion PC. The prize is worth $2,700.

Fresh off his victory, James kicks off round two and right away gets $800 from a single S. He does better on his second spin, where he triples $450 on three T’s. But he can’t cash in on $450 a second time thanks to a dud N.

Meg is up with her first spin of the game, netting herself $500 with an R. Her next spin lands on $900, which two L’s allow her to double. But her third spin, worth $300, isn’t much help as there are no K’s in the puzzle.

Carmel is looking to get back on the board after her Bankrupt last round, and starts off by getting $300 with an H, then $300 more thanks to a P. She buys three O’s, then almost hits LOSE A TURN, but she’s able to make it to $300. An overzealous James reaches for the wheel and almost spins, but Pat tells him not to because Carmel landed on a dollar amount. For her part, Carmel is able to cash in thanks to a single C. She buys three more E’s before finally landing on another dollar amount, picking up $600 on a V. Carmel buys three I’s before spinning again, netting $500 on a Y.

Carmel’s all ready to solve and calls BE A GOOD SPORT-UTILITY VEHICLE, which puts her on the board with $1,250.

Meg - $0
Charlie’s here to tell us that tonight’s Jackpot round is brought to us by Toaster Breaks from Hot Pockets, then introduces a new prize to the wheel; a year of maid service provided by Libman products. It’s worth $5,400. Pat says after the prize is revealed that he would like that.

Meg’s looking to join her competitors on the board as she starts off round three, and nets $1,000 right off the bat thanks to two N’s on $500. She also might end up with MAID SERVICE after landing on the new prize and picking it up after finding two S’s. Meg decides it’s vowel time and finds two E’s. Her next spin lands on $450 and she doubles her haul with two R’s. But Meg’s luck runs out after calling a dud L on $300.

Carmel takes charge and finds two T’s on $550. She almost hits LOSE A TURN a second time this game, but once again the wheel saves her and she hits $300. After finding two B’s, that familiar ringing tells us only vowels are left.

Carmel excitedly solves TENOR BARITONE & BASS, netting her $1,700 for round three. Pat reveals that the show’s producers were worried that, in the excitement, someone would accidentally pronounce the last word like the fish, and not the musical term. Had they done that, Pat says they could not have accepted the answer, though he notes that would have been an interesting singing group. Luckily, Carmel, a singer, knew her musical terms and was able to cash in.
Carmel - $2,950
James - $1,400
Meg - $0
Heading into round four, we’ve got a close match between Carmel and James, with only $1,550 separating them. Meg still has time to get on the board as well, and with $5,000 in play, anything can change.
Before the round begins, the camera zooms in on a prop $20,000 bill with Pat Sajak’s face on it that’s been hanging on the set all week. Pat makes the comment, “Yeah, that’ll get you a cup of coffee in a…”

Carmel confidently nods her head before the timer begins, and solves BLIZZARD once the clock starts. Pat has some difficulty opening the envelope before revealing Carmel is going on an online SHOPPING SPREE! Charlie explains she’ll be spending her money at CitiPlaza, CitiBank’s online shopping site, where dozens of stores are available. In total, her prize is worth $20,000. Carmel’s friend (my recording screws up around here, so I didn’t get a name) runs out to celebrate with her, Pat says she has won a grand total of $22,950!

Unfortunately, I did not record the post-show chat, so I have no idea of Carmel ended up singing for everyone at the end of the show, which she said she'd consider doing if she won.
Additional Notes
- There were two of every correct letter that was called in round three.
- A cameraman can be seen on the left side of the screen after Carmel solves the Bonus Round, just before it cuts back to her and Pat.
