I think if you had kept the money and won the game without hitting bankrupt, you can keep the money instead of having to buy merchandise. How come everyone went for the merchandise and gift certificates?

This goes in the Buying Your Time section.
You don't actually keep the money to take home. You have to put it towards a gift certificate or carry it over, "On Account", to the next round for more spending. I guess contestants just wanted to make sure their scores were locked in, though I like to see contestants take that risk with a little bit of money On Account.

I guess contestants just wanted to make sure their scores were locked in, though I like to see contestants take that risk with a little bit of money On Account. On the final round, any remaining money must be placed towards a gift certificate, though on some occasions when the round beings with a speedup, all winnings go towards a gift certificate. Contestants rarely placed money On Account if they had enough money to buy a prize for the sole purpose of winning the game to play the bonus round, or in daytime, to be the day's champion. I'd assume though in the pre-Bonus Round era, a champion's final day likely would have seen more players place winnings on account, especially if they're going for a big ticket prize like a car. Though since you must win another round to claim your winnings, more players were inclined on spinning before solving even if they knew the solution early; why risk your winnings for a future round when you can just go for it then?

Starting around 1985 on the nighttime version and may have happened on occasion on the daytime version, they would allow someone to take one of the higher priced items during a speed up round if they had enough money for it(Car, trip, boat, etc.), even if Pat said beforehand the round would be played for a gift certificate.
