Basically, for that week, they would revert to the shopping era where contestants can shop for items with their winnings.

Good luck with that. All they'd have are trips and cheap cars.
"Nice job, Lucy. You won $3,100 that round. Unfortunately, that's not enough to buy any of our trips so you'll take all that on a gift certificate and you'll like it."

They could bring back the other merchandise like tables and dalmatian dog statues.

Still fun to speculate. What changes would you have made for the next season?

They could bring back the other merchandise like tables and dalmatian dog statues. Unfortunately, Wheel hasn't offered merchandise prizes for close to 20 years now. As much as I'd love to see the early-1990s prize variety (furniture, home-entertainment packages, trailers, RVs, boats, motorhomes, annuities, jewelry, artwork, etc.) make a return, Friedman loves his cars and trips way too much to allow anything else.

I'm out of the loop when it comes to Friedman. Why do people hate him?

I'm out of the loop when it comes to Friedman. Why do people hate him? I'm sure Robert or others can cite more reasons, but the most obvious one I can point to is that Harry approves all the puzzles that get used on-air, so if a puzzle sucks out loud it's his fault for letting it on. By extension, he's also responsible for the severe lack of Song Title, Song/Artist, and Song Lyrics puzzles that pull from stuff made after about 1990. Harry's also the one who limited the prize rotation to trips and cars back in 2001, out of personal preference. Prior to Season 19, you'd see all manner of prizes from the useful to the esoteric. Don't get me wrong, Friedman has done some good stuff such as replacing the trilon-based puzzle board with the touch-based style, but...yeah.
