Recently, 90% of the BR categories provided in the show are really generic and kinda defeats the purpose of categorical variability in the BR. I personally like the option, but given how generic the categories have been lately, I wouldn’t be surprised if that gets retired soon.

Let's do a little comparison of previous seasons where the Bonus Round category was pre-selected, and previous seasons where the Bonus Round category was a choice.
Seasons 33 and 34 had 64 and 74 Bonus Round wins, respectively, and both of these seasons had the category in the BR pre-selected.
Seasons 35 and 36 had 65 and 62 Bonus Round wins, respectively, and these seasons had the category in the BR selected by the contestant.
Looking at these statistics, it seems as though having a choice in the Bonus Round hasn't made that much of a difference in the amount of Bonus Round wins for a season, despite the low amount of Bonus Round wins in Season 36.
Personally, I like the idea of having contestants choose the Bonus Round category. It gives the contestant a little bit of control in the Bonus Round. Also, like I said above, it hasn't made much of a difference in the amount of wins in the Bonus Round, but it's still a nice change, and I'm glad they're still using it in subsequent seasons.

Looking at these statistics, it seems as though having a choice in the Bonus Round hasn't made that much of a difference in the amount of Bonus Round wins for a season Even so, it's still a downward trend of 74-65-62. (Season 37 is currently at 34 wins, and I'd like to think we can get more than 28 wins in the remaining 99 episodes.)

(Season 37 is currently at 34 wins, and I'd like to think we can get more than 28 wins in the remaining 99 episodes.) Perhaps we should go a little further back with Bonus Round wins, starting in Season 30. The Bonus Round win statistics are as follows starting in Season 30: S30: 76 S31: 78 S32: 74 S33: 64 S34: 74 S35: 65 S36: 62 I'm not counting Season 37 yet since we are still in the middle of that season. These Bonus Round wins from S30-S36 average out to about 70 Bonus Round wins a season. Season 35 had 5 less than that average, and Season 36 had 8 less. The choice in Bonus Round categories does make a little difference, but even so, I still feel like the Bonus Round wins for Season 35 and Season 36 would be about the same if the category was pre-selected. There were also other factors that could have contributed to Season 36's low Bonus Round win count. - acwof

Another factor in the downward trend of annual bonus round win rates: Season 32 is when they started that (stupid and pointless) gimmick of the (cash) minimum being (season number x $1,000). As that amount has climbed, the win rate has dropped (with S34 an anomaly of sorts).

Let's look at the pros and cons of letting the contestant choose their own BR category.
Pros: -Gives the impression of greater control over the outcome of one's puzzle--you can have a difficult or unfair puzzle in pretty much any category, but everyone's got their favorite -Another place for the audience at home to yell at the contestants ("Don't pick THING! You fool!")
Cons: -Costs a few moments before the last commercial while Pat presents the categories and awaits the winner's decision -Means the puzzle writers need three potential Bonuses of different categories on hand at all times, ideally of comparable difficulty -An added element of complexity that according to the stats above hasn't significantly impacted win rates
Rules of elegant game design would dictate that if it isn't significantly impacting how the game plays and simply takes up time, then as you say, it could probably be done without. Maybe it hasn't actively made much of a difference in the downward win rate trend, but the main point is that it *feels* better as a contestant to have some hand in your fate, regardless of how consequential it is, and it is another fun moment as a viewer at home where you can feel smugly superior to a contestant if they make a different decision from yours and get burned for it. As some of us know, that is a pretty unfair attitude to take given the pressure of the scenario, but those moments where you feel like you could have succeeded where the people on T.V. failed are what sell a game show and make average people at home watch it.

Some puzzles could fall under multiple categories and hence could take up multiple choices - two examples that come immediately to mind are MOBY DICK (Best Seller and Character) and KAYAKING (Fun & Games and What Are You Doing?). For the record, I like giving players a choice of categories.

MOBY DICK (Best Seller and Character) Best Seller has never been offered as a choice, and Character(s) stopped being offered altogether after Season 35. Plus, that has no RSTLNE so it would never be a bonus puzzle today anyway. I get that's just an example, though. Another pro about having a category choice is that some puzzles that likely would have been Thing(s) in the past are now a bit more specific. I'm sure OLD VINYL ALBUMS would have been Things in Season 30 instead of Around the House, for example.

^ VINYL ALBUM was a bonus puzzle in S25 (That was categorized as THING.)

Yes, definitely. Guess what set of categories was given tonight?
Thinking of making a Garbage Gameshows thread for tonight's episode... hmmm....

^ I'm guessing THING, WAYD?, & PHRASE.
Also, do the garbage gameshows thread on the episode.

Maybe the range of choices of categories will be better when Mike Richards take over? Hopefully he will give away lots of big money and improve the show budget and also does a way better job than Harry Friedman.

Hopefully he will give away lots of big money and improve the show budget and also does a way better job than Harry Friedman. I really hope so, because I'm rather infuriated with this show as of late. I can't wait until Friedman's gone, he's gone down the tubes since he introduced the minimums being increased by the season number (Season # x $1,000), and the winrate has gone down each season because of it plus many other factors (aside from it going up in Season 34 then back down onwards). Lately it's been more frustrating than fun to watch, especially this week, and today's episode proves I need a break from this show and these boards. You know, the sadistic side of me is hoping for an epic loss in one of the next two episodes just to show how cursed of a month January is for WHEEL and how bad of a theme Railroad is.

I definitely agree the season minimum is a very bad move, as it worsens the season budget and defeats the purpose of having the in betweeners. In my opinion, Harry Friedman totally does not deserve sympathy from us at all. He is the worst executive producer of any game show I have seen and I will totally not miss him when he leaves
