I present to yall the 11/24/2010 episode. One of the 2 instances a solve attempt occurred on free play. Plus it was a successful solve. This episode has been posted in the vault already but the copy of it is no longer available so I'm gonna reshare it.

Same contestant failed to claim $36K in the SU, but still won the game.

The only time you can actually say, "I'd like to solve the puzzle" after a spin and not be stopped by Pat. Take note, all you sitcom writers who have parodied Wheel and had people spin before solving.
While the official rules do say that you can solve after spinning with no additional money earned from the spin, this is very likely just a failsafe in the event that a contestant might just blurt out a puzzle solution, right or wrong, after a spin. One contestant during Season 35's Great Outdoors week asked to solve after a spin, but Pat wouldn't let her.
Granted, there really isn't much of a reason to solve on Free Play unless maybe there are more than two possible answers in your head that can't be narrowed down to one from one letter guess. Pat stopped bringing up the ability to solve after Season 28, except for that one time in Season 29, but it is still an option. I remember one awkward moment in Season 27 where Pat told a male contestant he could "venture a guess", and he said, "I'll venture a guess, Pat... K?" Pat got thrown off that he thought he meant guessing a letter, not guessing the puzzle.
